As a bank angler with limited rods, I've gone to braid-to-leader for everything, which is only 5 rods. I do a 30lb mono backing which fills about 1/3 of my spool, then 30lb braid on my 2 MH baitcasters, 20lb on my M baitcaster, 40lb braid on my heavy baitcaster, and 10lb braid on my UL spinning. The techniques I'm planning on determine my leader. This is the most efficient for me because if I decide to try a different technique all I have to switch is my leader. But I run long leaders; easily 15 feet. I add a little superglue on my knots to help protect from them passing through the guides

Many fisherman will use lighter line for backing as it will enable you to create a much smaller connection knot. A uni knot with just a two passes in the knot using 10lb test has worked well for me.

@ericglab1630 I like a shallow spool that needs no backing. But not all my spools are small. My zillion is super shallow while my coastal holds 3 times the line. But braid to mono 4 life. Unless I'm cranking or fishing in the freezing temps. Then I'll use flouro. It's so stiff and on abrasion resistant. They say it but I've used it and it shows way more wear than mo o when fishing thru the rocks.

While I really enjoy all of your videos and this one was of great interest. But, purchasing a machine that you are demonstrating is outside the budget of most weekend anglers. I priced used versions and was amazed at the cost. So what I started doing is when a reel needs new line, I strip off the old, then carry it to my BPS, or any local tackle shop, pick up the new line and have them spool it for me. In cases where I need a leader, I’d add that at home. It has reduced all issues with line on either spinning or my baitcasters. However, if I could afford a machine like Blat is using I would have one.

That was great information. I’ve never seen a line spoiler in use and it was really interesting to see how the machine was set up for different uses. Great demonstration. Thanks.

Brian, I used to have these issues with my baitcaster. I learned to put my thumb on the spool just before the bait hits the water and just in case I get a birds nest I have a small stainless steel cerumen loop for untying the nest. It is great for manipulating the line. No sharp edges to deal with and a very small profile to work in tight spots with.

Dang B Lat you got your own line spooler, makes sense in your line of work and thanks for the info.

Man, when I was learning to cast left handed, the amount of time I had backlash was enough to make a man cry. But continually tweaking setting and feel finally got me smooth like butter. Hang in there folks, you'll find the sweet spot lol

Dude! I started using a baitcaster about 4 years ago after using only spinning gear since I started fishing 20 years ago. I bring 1 or 2 baitcasters with me , and guaranteed at least 1 of them needs a re-spool by the end of the day. 😂

$1,500.00 bucks for this line winder makes it totally impractical even for most pros imo.

That's a very cool spooling machine...

I either use mono or braid myself.

Great machine and review. But 99.99% anglers dont spool and unspool 20 - 30 reels at a time. So a compact drill with a hard foam and stuck it unto the middle of the spool line works well.

Thank you for the great video! However, I was impressed by the machine until you pulled out the handheld line guide for the spinning reel @24:51...😅

One thing that has me confused about putting tension on the line when spooling it, is that after one or two long casts all of that tension is gone. That is unless you are bringing in a big fish or you are using a lure with a lot of drag.

I've noticed its really dependent on how the manufatcur put the line on the spool. Old eagle claw used to have it twisted so it said to flip the spool ever so often, when putting ir on any reel spinning or baitcaster. Stuff like suffix mono or fluorcarob, is straight spooled on their spools, with no twist in it at all on their spools. This would be better on the machines.

I honestly get more knots and bird’s nest’s with my spinning rod. I have like 5 baitcasters on deck and one spinning rod and the spinning rod is always giving me trouble. Can’t remember the last time I had to cut out a bird’s nest. But I also take time to dial in my braking and lure weight and spool tension and don’t really ever mess with them.

If you backlash a lot get a Shimano Curado DC.. just a suggestion

I have become super careful about how much tension I put on my line,especially with drilled spools. I had a drilled spool on a baitcaster break because I put too much tension with mono and when the mono relaxed, it tightened on the spool and compressed the spool so much the spools shattered

Before I spend the next 30 minutes watching this, I have a question that has bugged the absolute $HIT out of me for years, I'm fed up with using 3 different types of line, Mono, Flora, Braid as we all do, but I personally want to put braid on every reel. What type of positive or negative effect would using braided line, and only braided line, have on my fishing using various baits, like lets say a "plopper" as compared to a swim jig?
@kevinerbs277822 күн бұрын
No give on the hits that's all, theres no shock absorption. Most surf fisherman only use braid on their reels. Which have rubber grips to grab the braids.
@umairfaizuddin342921 күн бұрын
I actually prefer braid/braid to leader on most my combos. Only time I’d hesitate on that is for crankbaits and jerkbaits. Just use the correct diameter for the technique youre throwing and use the right size fluoro leader.

Braid to leader, FG knot. This is the way

Bro, that's not 5 or 6 foot, I have been using that method for 30+ years. Your easy 6' tall, so your arm span is near 6'. Your first stretch of your arms was more than 5', then you added another half. Your more like 8 to 11 foot of a leader.
@blind_eye_fishing22 күн бұрын
If youre getting 5 to 6 foot with a full arm span and a half you mist be very short 😂. Your arm span is the same as your height 😂. I get 6' with one full span. I generally do mid chest to one out stretched arm twice then sometimes another half that. I run all spinning gear braid to leader even crappie/panfish setups. 8 or 10# braid to 4 up to 8# leader usually fluoro. Also use that setups on bfs as well for the same style fishing lures and weights. A 8x braid makes a huge difference on casting distance and you have more line strength so less breakoffs. I vety rarely use a 4# line btw. Mono only has one maybe two good uses anymore topwater lures and maybe if you want a slower sink rate with something.
