My dog gets sick, when we get in the car. She starts to drool, really bad, and then eventually throws up. She had a very bad experience when we brought her home. (it was a long 3 1/2 hour car ride, she did not do well at all) So, we are sitting in the car for 5-10 minutes, in the driveway, with her, with the car running, every day. We sneak in a ride around the block every now and then, but she starts to drool. That is our sign to get her out before she throws up. Are we on the right track, or is something else better. TIA

Helpful tip: a friend of mine’s dog hit the down window button in the car and subsequently fell out the car window resulting in a emergency surgery needed. If your car has a child protect window button you may want to use it for rides in the motor vehicle 🚗.

I really appreciate your videos which would have been very helpful when my goldens were younger(he’s 14 1/2 now and has trouble walking😞 and my other golden succumbed to cancer at the age of 9😢). They are/were great dogs, so well behaved, affectionate and easy to train but now I have a small dog, a 10 lb havadoodle who is 7 months old. I don’t remember my goldens being this difficult to potty train, to stop barking, to be friendly to people, to listen to my commands.... 😖. Are there any different training tips especially for smaller breed dogs? Just wondering because I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do a video with small breed dogs. Thank you for all you do.😊

I’ve re-homed an 8 month Golden Retriever and have a Volvo SUV, I want him to travel in the boot (trunk). I’ve been able to get him in using a ramp initially, then jumping in with the help of cheese….all good for 10 x 15 minute practice sessions over several days with me sitting in the car and praising/treating him. Then took him for a short drive to a 90 minute walk…..got back to the car and he totally refused to jump in so after a calm 30 minutes with me sitting in the trunk and talking to him/with treats I gave up and had to get him into the back seat with some difficulty! Does anyone have any suggestions as I want to be able to take him to the beach and woodland walks? Cambridge UK🇬🇧

Treats aren't working. I have to pick him up and put him in, he won't budge....I don't baby him, I've been patient but depending on where we are parked, it's actually a danger if he's resisting getting in the car. My husky pup was nervous when he went on car rides. Wouldn't relax unless someone was in the back with him. What I did to get rid of that fear was...More car rides until he got use to being in the car. I dnt cuddle fear I teach and show them no harm is present and they are safe. While doing this I made sure my driving wasn't rough and my turns was NOT hard. Took about week of rides and now she loves to get in the car.

Why not teach him to get a short running start? Until he gets too old, a running jump will work better than climbing. My lab only resorted to climbing when he couldn't jump, and when he knew he couldn't jump, he decided to climb. At that point, I didn't have to teach the climb,. He figured it out himself. You have such great explanations for everything, so I'm just curious how you feel about this.

Jumping down is probably not good for the dog's joints. Humans destroy their joints as well with such high impact things, jumping and running downhill. Squats with weights increase the space between bones and joints don't rub together as much anymore. I'm wondering if you could reduce these problems when the dog does regularly squats with weights.

1:12 "... cut the cheese..." Haha! Sorry, Robert, I'm basically a child and found that funny. :) Love this video, great for adult shelter dogs like mine that didn't know how to get in and out of the car and also hated the car. He had extreme anxiety, nausea, and didn't understand inertia. Patience was essential. And treats. Now he loves the car and doesn't want to be left at home! I bet a lot of shelter dogs have been dumped and have traumatic associations with said car. If I had started with patience and treats then maybe I wouldn't have had to shampoo my car so much!

My new rescue dog (8mo old) will get to the car with no problem. He is terrified of the car ride. Last tome he peed over my back seat cover. A bit of it leaked through on my car seat :( I have to take him today to vet clinic and I hope he won't pee in my car again. I just got him 4 days ago. He is sweet pup. I need help to make car rides not so scary for him. I have two other dogs and he seams to be doing better when they are with him in the car during trips. I just can't take them all to the vet as I would have to leave the other two in the car for the time of vet appointment - I do not want to do that, as my car is not a dog sitter. @RobertCabral Could you help me make him less fearful/stressed during car trips, please?

Cheese in this video. My dog's not even CLOSE to this level. He won't get within 10 feet of an open car door no matter how great the treat is. This video makes the progressions look easy, but it's not for my dog. Even if I put a treat on the driveway about 5 feet from the car door, he won't get it. So far, I cannot lure him any closer than about 10 feet from the open car door no matter what treat I offer. So, it's not NEARLY as easy as this video makes it appear. This is looking like a very LONG process for my dog - probably weeks. We'll see.
