As a person that spent a lot of time in the ocean growing up surfing on a daily basis, I have to admit that my fear of running into a shark let alone a great white shark was never on my mind but now that I don't surf anymore seeing these great whites nowadays with the technology and drone footage they scare the hell out of me and I was imagining myself being on your boat by myself I would've been scared shitless!

I think they are about more than they used to be, hence you never encountered them when you used to surf. They are hungry due to overfishing so they hang out near harbors a lot more. That's from what I know anyway, I'm really no expert, just a landlubber with an interest in the sea and marine life.

I grew up on the coast of Maine & used to be a commercial fisherman in the Gulf of Maine. It absolutely blows my mind thinking of the amount of times I jumped off a boat miles offshore for a swim, swam off of islands in mid coast Maine, etc. without the thought of anything other than dogfish & basking Sharks. Won't catch me doing it now! Since that fatal shark attack in Harpswell(which is about 15mi south of me) in 2020 & hearing population estimates off new england approaching 900 individuals- I really cannot believe what we used to do!

I used to do something similar when I was 10. My mom would kick us out of the house on Saturday morning as soon as the Road Runner was over. We take off on our bikes into the woods miles away and build rickety forts in the trees, 30 feet up with a couple 2x4s and a piece of plywood. Then we’d go on patrol in the woods looking for adversaries (I.e. girls). If we found any dead animals we would poke them with a sharp stick to see if they would blow up…. Then we’d go back to HQ and would swing down to the ground on an old worn rope we found along the way. Then we’d build a ramp and jump it with our bikes to see who could go the farthest. Then on July 4th my dad would give us a box of M80s and a punk to light them off, a lighter was too dangerous. We would drop them into a metal trash can and see how far the lid would fly into the air… not exactly a Great White encounter but I’m lucky to survive it all.

Back in the 80s, we used to swim in Cooks River, just where it starts, looking back today I can't help thinking how stupid we were. There would be five or six of us splashing around to attract sharks, thinking we could outswim them to the beach once we saw one. Bloody lucky we never came across one, we woukld of been an easy meal.

This is what i love about Rod. Has an epic encounter with what was a full size great white and handles it like he's been there before. No over sensationalism, no running around like an idiot, and nothing but respect. Here in the Florida keys I have seen some big tiger sharks but that great white would be an amazing moment. Great catches and amazing job with the cameras/drone. Cheers man. Try not to let the cobwebs accumulate on your wonderful boat Rod.

What a nice boat. I’ve got a 1987 deep v aluminum 18’ , that was setup as a fish and ski with the wheel and seats. Fished for years, and now have this hull that is stripped down to bare. I’d considered different ways to repower and configure it, and the configuration you have is along the lines of what I was picturing. With availability of good tiller control larger outboards , which provide much more usual space. I like the idea of having a floor with cleats so can add seats as needed , and have a Ton of cargo area. I like your boat !

I grew up basically "on the water"...living in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. I started sailing at age 6, worked with a friend on his 38' troller, sailed small boats competitively, etc, etc...now am a retired physician, still living with a great ocean view and very close to the water - and still, with my love (retired Olympic athlete) with an expansive view of the ocean. Can sail, any time I want, or ride an inner tube down a wonderful boisterous river (the 😊 Puntledge), etc...And this was a delightful video, educational, etc. - but, primarily, and obviously, you are clearly in love with the ocean and its many delights. Great post. Thank you.

This points out the scary fact, that you can pretty much jump in the water anywhere, and be on a shark's radar in no time. Many sharks know the sound of a boat engine, and know there is going to be a hooked fish, for an easy kill, so they follow that outboard sound for miles.
