You’re playing around in my backyard, I’m a Humboldt native. My grandpa and my dad both logged, as well as ranching, for years. I never logged, but was rated as a basic faller through my time in the fire service. My biggest stick was a pine about 39” at the cut, had a goose pen, and was on fire inside. I dumped that one on the Jones Fire east of Redding, CA in 1999. Thanks for documenting this, it’s a dying art.

I live in Humboldt Co. CA and worked on a logging crew back in the 1960's cutting old growth Redwood for 5 years. I saw a lot of giant trees fall. One tree had bark that was 17" thick. You can't legally haul a 16' diameter tree down the highway, so they had to be split into quarters. Those were interesting times. I have a few photos from back then.

Jake, that exactly the issue. Most people are so ignorant to what a healthy forest looks like that any amount of cutting and thinning or putting fire on the ground for fire use and thinning is a big scary. And it’s exactly that mindset that creates these massive forest fires we see along with climate issues sure. But most of our nasty fire season is due to massive mismanagement from swinging too far the other direction after old growth logging was prohibited.

I have a tree farm in NW PA. Mostly black walnut, black cherry and shag bark hickory. A couple things people don't realize is that taking a large tree for lumber sequesters a ton of carbon... and the younger tree(s) replacing it absorbs carbon and release O2 at an exponentially higher rate than a mature tree. Also removing a large tree can enable ten more trees, plus a ton of undergrowth, to spring up in its foot print. That provides habitat for fuzzy critters, helps with global warming, reduces fire hazards and mitigates the danger of the tree, or even one of its limbs, coming down and harming persons or property. It can still be sad to see such a gorgeous and impressive tree fall. All I can say is I try and focus on the benefit... and I show respect for these trees by encouraging people to recycle lumber whenever possible. Side note... splattering chicken juice all over my rig is a quick way to get relegated to riding in the bed. Just sayin. haha

I liked cutting in the fog. No matter what, you never get to the top of the mountain, best hiking ever...some ground is so steep, you take three steps up and slide back two. Business as usual in the REDS. Take rope with you, and keep it in the truck. That form of a tree is what we had referred to as a "Meadow Red," In Santa Cruz years past, 40 years back, the first buck would be at 20 or you will lose scale real quick due to tapper. This Posting group brings back some of my finest memories, long gone.

That fog phenomenon is why you get redwoods in California and Japan. It's a temperate rain forest, and I'm not sure where else it may exist. When I was out in CA (bay area) it was still pretty awesome to experience the fog and rain that happens on the SF peninsula almost every morning.
@maecarpenter67352 жыл бұрын
That fog is called the Marine Layer which originates in the water body surrounding the land and persists for long periods of time resulting in optimal growth conditions for all organisms blanketed by it.

Myyyyyyyyy Lord fellas!! I got news for all of you, every one of you needs to be wearing safety glasses!!! i’m walking around now with only one eye my right eye. I was sawing timber one day just like you guys here in this video, and a sliver came out and went right in my left die when I was 19 years old. They couldn’t do much back in those days they had to remove the lens. There was no such thing as a lens implant back in those days. So, it doesn’t dilate. Completely blind in my left eye. I’m 65 now. You don’t know how many days I wish I would have worn safety glasses. And I used to cut timber just like what we see here in this video. I’ve been written up in LOGGERS WORLD, 4 times. Please men, in the name of God, please wear them!! Hell I would buy your company 2 dozens. I’ll be retiring this year from the oil field. Regional safety manager for my company. A lot of people don’t recognize that trees are a renewable resource and by thinning the way that y’all are doing is actually creating more growth and a healthier forest! If we didn’t thin forest the trees would become so choked out by themselves that it would actually become detrimental. Even mother nature has her own thinning company it’s called lightning and forest fires…😊

These people that chain themselves to trees and preach conservation are idiots. True conservationists understand the importance of thinning and they understand that we have to use lumber to survive.
