In today's video, I'm working with Isaac and Randy to cut down a giant fir tree, but there's almost no room to work. It's all rope and slings from here.

And then they do crazy stunts like when they are cleaning the roof at the end. That is still a signifant fall. Same with the jumping off the skip when loading those branches. I am sure these guys are quite safe goind the tree work, but when you mitigate high hazards all day, it is very easy to forget about low hazards.

Judging by the state of the roof over the back porch, I'd wager the reason they were there in the first place was that the first pieces came down on their own days or weeks ago.

I did a small oak trimming job once a couple years ago after watching some videos like this and getting some climbing gear. I used only manual tools and managed to get every limb down safely by myself just using pulleys and the belay on my harness. It was by far the most fun I have had doing manual labor, and the thought and planning that went into it all was very satisfying for my autistic brain.

Today i was in a big ol" soft maple and it was crazy windy and i felt great until it was time to take the top. my rope guy might not have been as perfect as Randy but he did a damn good job and made me feel 100 times better when all i had left to do was chunk down the firewood and drop the stick! saty safe out there brother your videos keep me going after days like today working entire Sundays knowing theirs a full week ahead of me!

A little automotive technology could provide a better breaking system for the logs than the porta wrap or Jail Brake. Both the porta wrap and Jail Brake are using the friction of the rope against the metal as a brake pad. An automotive disk brake connected to a hydraulic cylinder would be attached to the tree. The rope would be wound around a large spool on the disc brake hub. A pipe would apply pressure to the hydraulic cylinder. The pipe would be attached to a rope to keep a safe distance. As the limb was lowered the ground operator would pull on the rope which would vary the pressure on the brake. This would allow the limb to descend rapidly at first and come to a gradual stop. It would take the guess work out of how many wraps to use. The disc would be the braking mechanism, not the rope. It could freewheel at first and easily come to a complete stop, all with very little effort from the ground operator.

So I drive a dump truck. We run asphalt millings with our bed down. Most times we don't worry about it, but we always run with the tarp on the bed partially extended to catch anything that might yeet over the cab. It's for safety and ease of cleanup. You could do the same with your dump bed there. By all means, tilt the bed up, but you could also partially extend your auto-tarp out to catch the blow-over.

Don't know if you're doing this or not, but you'd save hours on the chipper hour meter if you got 4-5 "grab piles" ready with the loader in front of the chipper on the road before turning on the chipper, and then turn it off in between chipping 4-5 bundles. Obviously you've got to deal with running out of room on the road.
