Wow! Great job! I “Saw the Light” at age 50. I left an awful marriage (half my fault of course!). I had no children and did not have to pay alimony (great attorneys!). Lost all my money. But felt myself again for the first time in my life. The first thing I did was promise myself never to work full time for anyone ever again. Now I have 3 part time jobs and make twice as much! I have too much work I have to turn work down. I have more time than before and am on track to a very nice retirement (if God wills it) in ten years if I so choose. But I will continue to work as long as I am physically and mentally able. I have another 30-40 years of healthy living left. What else would I do? The world is literally calling and I am answering. So, once you choose to live for yourself first. the options are endless. Just remember to “Always put the oxygen mask on yourself first!” Otherwise, you WILL become just another casualty trying to save others who can not be bothered to just read the directions for themselves. Thanks 🙏🏽 Peace!

I am 54 and looking to retire at 55 through crypto gains. Currently, June 2021, I am only 5 figure net worth with only regular monthly bills... no debt. I have never felt this free in my life!! I expect, later this year, my 5 figures MAY hit low 7 figures or at least high 6 figures and I am learning now how to exit Kanada for the winter. I may find my way to Mexico for a tourist visa of 180 days and figure things out from there... just my initial thoughts.

Yep, I agree. It's all fake -- an extension of high school. The thing is people should use the corporate world for what it is -- a soul-less environment & a money grab. You are reflecting a HUGE new paradigm in the US. For example, scores of youth are leaving corporate for a nomadic life in a van, bus, or motor coach as outside consultants. They have literally downsized, have less and MAKE less money to pay less tax, so as to WORK LESS and have more personal freedom. I personally was a corporate vice president / regional manager four times until I couldn't take it any more. I tendered my resignation, went out and got an $8 an hour construction laborer job, and within a few years, ran my own construction company. From there, I developed a financial services company. Now the company is involved in several major deals with deferred cap gains. See you soon. LOL

I'm self employed because I want to remain flexible in my business and follow my own rules. I'm accountable for my services for which I can't pass the "buck" to anyone else. I prefer to do business with family run non franchised business as they are better equipped to handle my needs. Great video.

I've worked in companies that have gone from start-up to corporatr. Thats when you leave. I've also come to realise, the more I move about in the corporate world, that nobody actually knows what they're doing. Everyone is just copying what others in their field have done, and badly. Everyone is just winging it, and because nobody else knows what they're doing either, nobody notices.

My first business mentor told me once that when it comes to employees or outsourced staff, it’s not about them making mistakes, it’s about what they do after the mistake - how they handle it. You’ve nailed something about corporate here that I suspect most entrepreneurs feel but perhaps cannot articulate: this “passing the buck” behavior in a system which punishes rather than rewards personal responsibility. Thanks!

Probably in the old days, but the new cutesy corporate structure is to call everything an "opportunity", and IF they fix what they mess up (which is rare), this is supposed to be an "opportunity" to impress me. Since I've started keeping track, 100% of my experiences of being a consumer has been fighting to fix mistakes. That doesn't impress me, and is a waste of time. 100% of my experiences working for corporations is hearing about how the company is fighting a vendor who does not perform. 100% of my experiences at work is watching departments squabble over nonsense. So, yes, Part of that is exactly how they handle it. But, when I look at the size of the customer disservice apparatus, and how they even advertise it in commercials, when businesses operate on the "ask forgiveness, not permission" basis, you already lost points by making the "computer error" that no one could control. But when you ask for forgiveness, that also means that not everyone will take the time, or have the time to call the business out to correct their error. That free money adds up on the bottom line. You don't need to swindle one rich person when you can swindle pennies from millions of people. I'm now less forgiving.

Completely agreed with how you have framed the definition of a corporate. I have worked in large corporations for 15+ years and the first characteristic you mentioned is indeed the most prominent - everyone is trying to protect their own backside. There is a tremendous wastage of resources as managers only want to protect their own interests and don't want to take any risks whatsoever. This is absolutely the antithesis of entrepreneurship.

I've worked at large corporations and small firms. In my experience they both suffer from politics, backstabbing and finger pointing. In many cases, at the smaller firms, the owner/principal can be quite the tyrant and bully. What I have noticed at small tech firms is that most people don't stick around. After one or two years most move on. The only ones who stay are the owner's pets and friends. That said, I completely understand why if you have an entrepreneurial bend that you would want to avoid large corporations like the plague. Sure, if you are good at corporate politics you can make some really good money in Corporate America without risking anything, except perhaps your dignity.

As more of the economy is service driven, it has become more important to please people than to deliver. Lots of marketing and smiles with a high price tag often are conditioning people to associate value with something - a total lie. The ultimate power in life is our freedom. Institution is the antithesis to freedom. Because it’s a created setting and culture for you to conform, to pass the ball to the next person. To slowly deactivate your individual creative response to life. Ppl become like machines who give a standard answer. This is why I didn’t enjoy my two year stay in japan. Their whole society is about conformity and deferring to the superiors. Very suppressed emotions. You get a lot of yes man. Overworked and tired. Very afraid to think differently. I avoid doing any business with any Corp that has a big value chain. Anybody that has a problem will hit many walls before resolving a problem. I wouldn't employ a supervisory person that has been exposed to that Value Chain syndrome in my business either unless they can display a complete ability to be accountable. Value chains are an excuse for if I screw up my boss can fix it. If the customer is difficult I can legally pass the buck. It is a tool to make sure no little guy at the bottom comes up with anything brilliant. That is the thing that puts you off. Accountability has been removed from professionalism in the Corporate world so professionalism on each level is lacking. If one person shines the whole Corporation tries to take credit and if one messes up they all take a dive. No personal touch.

One of the best compliments I've ever gotten from someone that worked for me was that they never felt like they couldn't tell me about a mistake. We'd look at the mistake, figure out why it happened and brainstorm on how to fix it so it doesn't happen again. The person said that the best thing was that it never came up again so they didn't have to worry about it coming back to haunt them during evals. I ended up quitting management because I apparently wasn't doing things how the other managers did things so I decided it wasn't for me.

Some of my worst commercial experiences, as a contractor working somewhere or as a guest staying in a hotel, involved large US corporations; yet some very good experiences also involved large US corporations; I love staying at Hilton Hotels, for example, and I wondered what made them so nice. So, I read "Be my Guest" by Conrad Hilton. I also loved doing contract work for HP in the mid-1990s, and I wondered what made them so nice. So, I read "The HP Way" by David Packard. In both cases, these companies were started by entrepreneurs who (key point) instilled their personal values in the business culture so well that it kept going as such even when they were no longer personally involved.

You probably hit on the nail. I see the corporate world as such: anever more extending body where the head, the CEO, has no idea of what happens to his feet , the employees in contact with reality, where no one has control over anything and therefore do not feel responsible for anything.

Thanks Andrew, it is good to hear from your more philosophical side. I worked diligently in a corporation for more than a decade but it was hard to feel I was making a real impact in that convoluted environment.

I'm surprised it took you so long to get that Andrew! I'd like to add my take in that for example if you try to get help to resolve a problem, THEY JUST DON'T CARE. Incompetence and inefficiency are accepted, and are in fact the norm of standard. This transcends across all industries. Contrast that to going into a small restaurant- you can see the enthusiasm and personal care from the owner. That was the second reason why I left the corporate world over 25 years ago. The first was that after lots of success they gave me trophies and recognition. I don't want that, I'd rather have money! I got tired of making them rich. I figured that being on my own, even if I were to fail, I'm doing it for myself. I can never go back, and wouldn't if they paid me! Freedom rules, we are all blessed to have it! Best success to you!

I hated working in corporate environments, as an entrepreneur, I shunned behaving "corporately". Strangely enough my local competition was exceedingly corporate and it was immense fun always being the unpredictable rogues and pirates we were at heart. My biggest failing was being under capitalized in a rapid growth technology sector, but my biggest advantage was the ability to innovate and overcome the lack of capital with hard work and creativity. If I had been properly capitalized, I might have stayed an entrepreneur longer, instead of taking the path I eventually found (I was in danger of being forced out of a very competitive market). I still have crazy dreams about the business I built and walking away from the freedom for something considerably safer (but still not corporate). Soon (2 years) I will be free of the shackles I accepted for modest security and I am brainstorming to figure out what is next and how I can generate 7-8 figures of yearly income, as opposed to the paltry 6 that I enjoy now.

Maybe "corporate" is not the work you are looking for. Maybe institutional as a better word. All large organizations suffer from this culture; the military, church, and large NGO, UN etc. You and I are corporate, in the sense that we start small corporations all over the world. Many small corporations were cool cats when they were small, and then decay set in at 500 or 5,000 employees.

I worked corporate my whole life and you are so right. The buzz words that make the rounds like empowerment, paradigm shift, we're a family and a number of others. One thing you are assured of by eating in a chain restaurant or staying in a chain hotel is the same degree of mediocrity where ever you go. Never really good or never really bad.

AH is a sensitive guy -- in a good way! Many of us feel as he does about this but just accept it as, well, that's the way life is, and just let it go. One thing that’s irksome on the upscale hotel circuit is when they slam you with a $50 per night (or more) surcharge of some sort that they’ll keep if they believe you've damaged or stolen anything from your room or suite (they’ll supposedly refund your money within a couple of weeks or so once they determine you didn’t steal or damage anything). I get it, though. Evidently, there are people who rent hotel rooms, throw parties, trash the place, and hotels need to discourage and punish such behavior. When you are a law abiding person, however, who wouldn’t harm a fly and you get treated as if you are a criminal suspect, a threat to hotel property, such corporate treatment leaves the innocent guest, who has paid many hundreds if not thousands of dollars for a brief stay, feeling dejected, unappreciated, and, frankly, like not wanting to stay there ever again. Once, I asked the front desk to cancel the surcharges upon check out (which is when I found out about them). After a bit of back and forth, the clerk decided to waive the surcharges. Her flexibility was appreciated (although while I was speaking with her, I believe a member of the security staff went directly to my room to verify that everything was in order); hence, they waived the add-on fees right then and there instead of making me wait for weeks. Still, that whole ordeal is what I remember most about staying in that hotel, thus pretty much ruining the experience of spending a few nights there -- coming close to spoiling the whole trip. There has to be a better way -- "Go where you are treated best!"

Probably using different words to say the same thing you are saying, but it all comes down to ownership. Do you own your job / responsibilities, or do you just rent them from a company or other entity. It's the old bacon and eggs analogy: The chicken was involved but the pig was committed.

Banking continues to behave like most legacy businesses. They lost sight of who they’re supposed to work for. That’s why I always prefer small regional banks. Unfortunately for their industry, Cryptos and platforms based on blockchain are going to replace them and turn them into another dinosaur industry

Banks alone are the biggest waste of time. It's far more productive to just make the money I need than to jump through ridiculous hoops. Haven't borrowed since 2004..... And when I wanted to open a second trading account my bank wanted TWO hours of my time, even though I already had a registered trading account with them. Through an independent it was about 15 minutes to send my stuff in and 3 days later had my account.

I'm currently in the corporate world. I recently had an opportunity to fill a spot of someone retiring (a much more demanding job) while their replacement was having a baby. My paycheck went up 4x. I have been a corporate executive all my life for three decades, in my own country and abroad, with top companies / brands in the consumer electronics business and I couldn't have agreed with you more. It takes a very heavy price, gives back very little and exhausts / wrings out the last bit of life from you and then rejected and left to rot and be extinct. Governments and corporations are fundamentally the same thing, basically two sides of the same coin. And coming to coins, I realize and believe today that cryptos are the future of the world and the true freedom for people. Govts and Corporates /banks are trying to put it down in all ways they can but more and more people are joining the crypto tribe and it will eventually become a regulation that will change the world, permanently. I am a person with concepts, thoughts and insight and nothing much more, I am afraid. I am crippled by the fact that I have very little money, in fact I have nearly nothing and I am all alone with my thoughts and concepts only. Without money, nothing matters or works, not even the best of ideas or people.
