The difference in resolution between the color and black & white screen is because these devices have a separate color layer over the original epaper screen. This layer filters the light in different colors. However the resolution of this colorfilter is lower, thus giving the split definitions.

Right, I understand it now. Thanks for the explanation. I'm just really new to E-Ink stuff and I had no proper idea how the colour and resolution stuff worked.

Was just coming to comment on this. good job :) It's similar in concept to how many video compression algorithms will compress colour and luminosity information at different resolutions, often colour information is stored at 1/4 of the resolution of the luminosity info, our eyes have a hard time perceiving the difference.

I love this thing. I just ordered it thanks to your review. I wanted an eink Android device for a long time but the abscense of color and terrible fps stopped me. But this is amazing, it's not terrible in terms of performance, it easily handles videos and games (idk why it crashed in GTA tho), it gan go up to FIFTY FPS (I'm pretty sure you are the only one who maxed it out on video). The colors are dim, but there are settings like brightness and contrast which for sure can make it look good even on extreme 50fps refresh. Will absolutely post an update when it arrives!

That Amazon packaging is pretty standard fare in the US. I think some of their shipping centers only have a few standard size boxes that they can ship things in, and they don't seem to believe in filling in empty space with bubble wrap or other packing materials. Maybe it's something to do with not creating extra waste, but it does get annoying sometimes.

Who needs an ebook reader that uses power like a normal tablet and would be even more expensive? e-ink retains the content without using power and is really good to read, like ink on paper and the battery lasts a month in ereader use. basic oled consumes power even if the image is still and you have to charge the device like any smart device you already have. And you think it would be feasible to have two resolutions and refresh rates and color mappings in memory, then compose the two displays over some kind of protocol and the gpu does double duty constantly. I you can spend thousand aussie bucks on a 7" display, yeah "for shits n giggles" is how some people make buying decisions. :D

I love e-ink displays, and one day hope to be able to tinker with them in some home products, since they seem like they would be really nice for semi-permanent displays, things that you might use but not always need a lit display for, and could see some degree of power saving by only needing to power when the display changes. It seems like a technology that could see interesting integration into smart home tech, but I also love to see the tech advance in general, even if I can't justify the cost to try more of them myself.

With how good the refresh rate on this display is, if you wanted to do gaming on it maybe emulating Game Boy games would work well, since they’re mostly monochrome and designed to be high contrast and with screen ghosting in mind.
@SMOOREZ4 ай бұрын
That's also a pretty good idea. Thing is anything out of reading ebooks and such, when the display is constantly refreshing then that battery life starts to drain so while you'd be able to play some GB stuff it wouldn't last terribly long, maybe a few hours or so.
@woldemunster92444 ай бұрын
@@SMOOREZ This is why all the "high refresh rate" options shouldn't be there by default, like having more than 4-bit grayscale on e-ink panel. People immediately start thinking about emulators and stuff when real gameboys are available for peanuts. Same energy as buying that Samsung smart-fridge to play Skyrim and you have no money to buy food because you bought that fridge. Maybe you can buy just the door without the fridge part and get a "portable" smartfridge gaming system....

All the ghosting on it, reminds me of really old LCD tech from 90s, like some ancient Macintosh PowerBook 100 passive matrix, some old Compaq laptops or stuff like gaming on Palm m100. Those weren't gaming machines, but I played a lot of games on those despite the ghosting. E-Ink is almost there, but it's too expensive for what it is right now and it doesn't offer a good quality. Still... It is really cool.

Thanks for the review. It is helpful. What attracts me most about Bigme B751C is that it allows to download 3rd party apps like Kindle or Kobo apps. I'm thinking that maybe I can use this color eink device to read my ebooks across different platforms... but is it feasible? I guess my question for you here is: in your experience, do these 3rd party apps work smoothly on B751C? I've tried other old ebook readers manufactured from some Chinese companies, but 3rd party apps were just simply not workable, limited by Eink technology!

In all honesty it's price competitive for the size and especially for being colour. I am considering something like that. Right now I use a gaming handheld (Odin Lite 1) with a Dimensity 900 for readiing, it lasts around a month just for reading and some low spec gaming... the colours on my LCD definitely pop, but it is small. I think it's fairly priced for what it is and what it does. I'd have to know whether a couple of apps I use would work on it... but it's worth considering.
@SMOOREZ4 ай бұрын
I guess it's because I'm too used to regular devices and not E-Ink stuff. I thought for the money you do get color but battery life is iffy and it lacks some features. But folks like yourself that know more about e-readers and pricing may be more drawn to this rather than I am if that makes sense?
@MissFoxification4 ай бұрын
@@SMOOREZ Yeah it makes perfect sense. To many people it's just a slower and more expensive tablet with worse colours. I think it might come down in price as more enter the market but not by much. Even greyscale readers of a similar size cost a similar price.

Hey, just wanted to point this out. While the price for a device like this may seem high, but maybe if I told you that color e ink display on its own is 250 to produce. Might make it seem a bit more reasonable no?
@UmbreWolf4 ай бұрын
These things aren't as widely produced as an lcd or amoled. Small color e-ink displays something small enough for a smart watch is still almost 100, sometimes more depending where it's sourced from. It's the display..simple terms are they are expensive to produce. The company still needs to make some kind of profit to keep it in production.
@SMOOREZ4 ай бұрын
I knew e-ink wasn't cheap but I had no idea it was that pricey. I guess what I tried to think of in this review is that it's a fairly lacking tablet hardware wise but with the e-ink display on top it's not justified. 4GB RAM, 64GB, Helio P35 and Android 11 is on that sort of low to mid range. Maybe my opinion was a bit harsh but it's just how I felt during the review.
@sorsu4 ай бұрын
Thats fine, typically these tablets dont get high-end hardware whatsoever, putting most of the money in the screen, build and/or the pen layer. theres a lot of reasons why eink in general is expensive, including licensing the patent or putting features like "paper like screensaver" for better clarity/writing, but it is a bit annoying they dont also put in a good CPU (or in that matter, an actual gpu, ive only seen a couple with dedicated GPUS) unless you go on the high-end, which is aimed for businesses usually and cost 800-1200$USD I guess argument could be made that "lower powerdraw = better" but... cmon you can find a stronger ARM chip with equal/less powerdraw than that
@UmbreWolf4 ай бұрын
@@SMOOREZ from your standpoint of veiw, yeah something like that should have better specs, i'm not going to lie, but that would just drive up the cost even more. Maybe like you said they will get better and will get more widely adoptd across devices. Thats really the only reason they are so expensive. They are being poduced but not mass produced Remembers sony first oled tv? It was only 11 and it was selling for 2000$ and that wa sjust a tv. that wa sbefore it was widely adopted. just an example. And the PocketBook InkPad 3 is 320€ with a silgtly larger 7,8" display, but without stylus (afaik). Addendum: The InkPad Eo has stylus input, but its 540€. Well I'm on my 3rd viewing. But don't really know where to start. Lol Ok. I'll start with your vignette. I feel the frustration of Amazon ludicrous packaging. I'll say no more. I'm not really sure what to make of this device. It seems a bit niche. The screen can look and feel like you are writing on paper. Or even draw some awesome doodles. But can you do this on your existing phone ot tablet. The other week on the mammoth live stream you were doodling on an iPad 9nth gen. I was impressed by the options it had. So I had a try on my phone and tablet ( both Samsung) and I could takes notes or doodle, badly but that's me not the device's fault. Lol The screen doesn't really look very clear, hopefully it's better in real life as opposed to viewing through a camera. The colours looks washed out and the images look grainy. I do like the pen/stylus and it's extra functionality. One food point. I do like the bezels and the extra real estate to the side of the screen where the buttons are. Being able to hold it without blocking the screen with my stubby fingers is brilliant. Another plus with the extra large bezel is in landscape mode. If watching KZbin have the screen slight higher up, for me, is really neat. Lol I do like that you can get inside to replace the battery. Which I think is woefully under what I thought it should have considering modern tablets. Music sounds OK for listening to KZbin but not for anything more than background noise. Bluetooth headphones/speaker may improve the sound quality. I prefer a wired set up. So would a dongle be OK to attach to give a headphone jack? I wouldn't really want to use this for watching anything to be honest. The screen isn't designed to be clear. However, the Devine Ms Ripley looks uber cute as a little big eyed cutie bundle of fur. I am torn. I do like this device. I do like the stuff you are demonstrating. The colours look more like pastels and muted. But OK for what it does. However, I'm a boomer. Lol. If I'm going to shell out a lot of money on something. Then this lacks so much. A camera would be welcome. It's seems so weird that it doesn't have one. Multifunctionality is a big part of deciding on what to buy. I would still need a normal tablet to watch any streaming services. I could maybe play card games on this OK. I like spider solitaire lol and the trainings of the screen probably wouldn't be a problem. I too had a really good chortle at the names of those apps. The double meanings were so obvious lol. So I'm going to say that I like this devices. It seems easy enough to change the battery. Which is so important if they want you to fork out so much money for this device. If I'm spending money on something. Then I want that something to have a decent live span. Planned obsolescence is not cool. I want things to last. So for me it's overpriced. I sieve you can get screen protectors that make it seem like you are writing on paper, if that's your thing. Plus a tablet seems to have more going for it. Maybe in the future. But not for me. Having rambled myself with random points just popping up with no seeming rhyme nor reason. I have throughly enjoyed watching this video. Maybe it's getting me to think outside of the boomer mindset. Lol 😂
