E-Bikes are a contentious topic in cycling, but e-cargo bikes could be the future of urban mobility. With their ability to carry heavy loads by bike, they offer an eco alternative to utility vehicles and are even capable of transporting children safely. James joined FoodCycle in Bristol for the day with a Ca Go e cargo bike to check one out.

@@ice4142 The biggest advantage of a bike like that is to transport children. Otherwise, I have an ordinary pedal power only hybrid bike and I use a large sized dog trailer which is just under 250 litres in capacity, almost the same as the bike in the video. I've had over 70kg in weight and had it stuffed full plus a 24 pack of toilet rolls bungee'd to the roof plus two panniers full with another 60 litres or more. It's 6km each way to my local shops. You can do almost the same for a fraction of the cost of that e-bike. Hell, you could buy a second hand e-car with more range for the cost of that e-bike!

A lot of people use a cargo bike in The Netherlands, mostly in inner cities and town centers. The postal service, parcel deliverers like DHL, Cool Blue (a sort of Amazon), brewers like Heineken use them to deliver beer kegs and crates to bars and cafes and my local supermarket delivers my groceries to my home by cargo bike. All meal deliverers have e-bikes for deliveries in town (no cargo bike, just normal e-bike with an insulated box at the front and on the back). I work at a construction company and we use cargo bikes for the maintenance crew at a large industrial estate. But most people use it for bringing their children to school or daycare and transporting their groceries from the shop to their home.

GCCN Global Cargo Cycling Network. Actually, that's not so silly. A sub-channel or series about utility cycling (using bikes for commuting, shopping, bringing the kids to school, etc.) and all the tech, tips, tricks, and hacks would be a good resource. E-bikes, normal bikes, lighting systems, backpacks vs. panniers, how to dress, how to deal with weather, etc. Especially in these times when people are concerned about exposure to COVID on public transport..

I've got one, and it works great for when I need to cart stuff that won't fit in my road bike's panniers. The one I have has a roof and roll-up doors, so when the weather is craptastic I can still go out, run errands or go to work, and not be miserable. And before I hear people argue about how its unnecessary, when it's below freezing, there is freezing rain, and a driving wind (ie: freakin' miserable) all the people I see on the road and trails during nice days just aren't there, and I still am.

I’ve been saying for a while that there should be a dedicated e-bike and urban cycling channel. EMBN is about mountain biking and they shouldn’t shoe horn other e-bikes on that channel because it makes no sense. Urban e-bikes and cargo bikes will be the biggest sectors of the industry. EMTB will be tiny relative to the rest of the market as it matures. And GCN is about carbon road bikes and training plans. Which people who just want to ride an e-bike or e-cargo bike around town don’t care about. Unless you’re like me and you like road, MTB, e-cargo bikes and everything else in between. But I haven’t met too many people like me. But regardless, it should have a dedicated channel.

as a bike mechanic fixing bike on the road in Paris with a cargo bike i can tell you we're the future we are cheaper, quicker and faster than other alternative when we need it we can also add a big trailer but dont be focused on this bike, there is a lot of different model for different use. My coworkers love the Bullitt for his aggressive or sportive position witch help to go faster, like faster than the 25km/h of the motor assist), my personal best is 43km/h on the champ Elysee I prefer the Douze for his steel frame witch give more compliance and his cable direction for manoeuvrability And don't be fixed on the bosch motor also, it's like other component sometime on paper one seems better than another but in feel you prefer the cheaper one, i personally prefer the fell of a back wheel motor than a crank motor and strangely my favourite assist come from the cheapest motor we have. and you can ride them quite easily without any motor assist on the flat or low gradients, that why some of them are not sold with motor assist btw riding them is easier than you think it's like 15 min of practice for low speed and that's it

2Y ago in Ghent (B) they had even larger-sized buckets. Students were doing their flat moves with them. Because it's a bike-prioritizing city, Amazon-like deliveries of small relatively large boxes go ideally with that --- fill this 250kg capacity with average Amazon deliveries and you have what, 30kg tops? They really need more volume! In Bristol however, I'm not sure about the business case.

Now you gotta so a e-cargo challenge. Have two presenters tasked with buying supplies to build a large doghouse. First person to collect the wood and bring it back to the location wins. Maybe throw a couple obstacles into the mix. Please make this episode lol

Hard to accept that in the UK in 2020 we are in such need for charities to relieve food poverty. However, we'll done GCN for highlighting this great work in such an interesting way. Now that's GCN inspiration! 👍

Great video! More people need to realise that the bike is also a mode of transport! That Cago looks like a great bike. The name isn’t the best for Portugal but so isn’t Kona and we see them here. By the way, Lisbon’s city has a program to encourage people to buy cargo bikes. Not only they give you some money to help you with the hefty price, but they also have a few ones you can try for a month. They’re the future for urban mobility!!

I know this is all about cargo bikes, but I have to give a shout out for helping with a food saving program. Up until the covid I used to volunteer regularly collecting, preparing and sharing food with those that are food insecure. We served in a large park at our city center so our efforts have been sidelined by public health measures. I like the idea of potentially delivering food via cycle though. Maybe something we can incorporate in the future. Anyone looking into it, this is a great way to feed those in need and increase the efficiency of our food supply chain.

With engineering technological improvement, all I can see with a bit of lateral thinking is how fantastic e endurance road bikes are going to be in a few year's time. Living in Yorkshire near to the Dales, plenty to look forward to.

For me the biggest worry with ebikes is making sure that I could get replacement parts 5, 10, or more years from now. With this big an investment and with many new players in the space, I'd worry about a company going bust and no longer making replacements available.
@CianMcsweeney
@CianMcsweeney 2 жыл бұрын
that's why building your own, with an existing bike and an ebike kit, is probably the best in terms of longevity (more difficult up front obviously), as all the normal bike parts are just standard, and if your battery, motor etc. needs replacing you can add in any brand you want that's currently available

Cargobikes are the most important thing for a car-free-city. There are so much services that don't need a big car or truck. We do have a delivery-service in my service based on cargo bikes and they work pretty well and went up from 1 to 4 or 5 cargo bikes in 2 years now. Nevertheless the bikelanes here in Germany are often nearly impossible to use by cargobikes because they are too narrow. And if you ride on the car lanes you get noisy complaints by car-drivers. Still a lot to do.

It's worth noting that the 85 Nm of torque is peak torque. You will only get that at the very beginning of your torque curve, i.e. starting from a standstill. At full speed it will be something more like 10-20, which is fine on flats, but might be a problem on hills. I've had issues with my Bosch CX on the grades of San Francisco when hauling more than 200 lbs. I highly doubt you would be able to haul 250 kg up a hill. I have essentially the same motor, on a much lighter bike, and it struggles with 90 kg on grades over 5%. Note also that a chain is capable of far more torque than a belt drive. I really don't understand all of these cargo bike manufacturers putting belt drives on their bikes lately. Sure, it's quiet and oil free, but you want maximum torque and strength for cargo applications.

In the U.S. most pathways with pedestrians have signs posted that forbid any motorized vehicle. Even if you are pedaling without a motor assist would you not get into trouble if stopped or n case of even a minor accident (if using such pathways)? Is it different there in England?

Just wondering if a traditional ebike and a 'better' trailer may be better here? You had to travel on the cargo bike to a different town empty, then you start filling it up, and empty the bike, and then travel with that empty bike home. Or, you travel with a normal size bike, get the trailer, and start filling up, empty the bike, drop off the trailer, and then travel home on a normal size bike. I guess it depends if the shape of the bike is easier to handle than a bike with trailer. Or if the bike is a nuisance, when you don't need the cargo part.

@@gcn Perhaps a little removed from gardening, but I remember that during the 60s, Japanese track riders (and track was massive in Japan) were sent to an academy to attain fitness, culture, mediation, tactics etc. And FLOWER ARRANGING was part of the curriculum. If this still obtains, perhaps you could send a presenter over to attend a course. Now, which lucky one...........?
