My favorite thing about the game, is it gets harder as you get better. I know that sounds like a "no duh," kind of statement, but beating Mom once was such a crazy feeling. Then you go and play again and the game just keeps expanding and adding new items and strategies, making it feel new every single time.

as for an isaac player who has a total of 1,055 hours (actual amount of gameplay on my switch), everything mentioned in this video is so true in so many ways. This game is really REALLY addictive, fun, and amazing to experience whenever I hop on this game. I remembered first playing isaac back around december 2020 when my older brother had the game himself to which he asked me if i wanted to give it a try. Had no idea what any of the items did, had no idea where the secret rooms could be or trouble finding tinted rocks, anything like that. The more i played it, the more stuff i knew in the game like what items do, how this item affects this item, synergies, trinkets, techniques you could do to make your run better or broken, and a WHOLE lot of other stuff just by the run the game generates for you. As well as unlocking secrets, unlocking even one secret gives you more desire to continue playing the game, unlocking more secrets, never getting bored of it. Ending from here, Isaac will always be considered as my most favorite and comforting game to play everyday.

Even though I had seen people play it here and there on twitch I was really bad and did not know what to do except for to beat bosses. it took me 3 whole MONTHS to 100% isaac and it felt so good. to slowly understand the lore, the bosses, the good items, the bad items and everytime i’d get a new item, i had new characters and different gimmicks to adapt and evolve. isaac, to me, proves that quantity and quality could walk together. sure, some items are trash, some are supposed to be trash, some have the same use (hp ups), some do basically the same thing, but that’s the fun of isaac! there’s so much thing to the point that, when a new run starts, you’re not grinding for some op item, you’re taking different items and strategizing to your content (and the boss you want to kill). after 3 months of grinding, sometimes, when 100 percenting other games, i miss a game that was difficult everytime i attempted it. (anyways this is why i love isaac)

Another thing to consider is the binding of isaac's modding scene, which has to be one of THE BIGGEST, well supported and easy to impliment in videogaming (at least on pc), which is what really got me back into isaac. Want to spice up the progression loop of isaac? Here's just casually +200 hours of new floors, enemies items and characters that you can seemlessly add onto your game, for free. Like the gameplay of isaac but don't quite jive with some of the artisitc choices? hundreds of easyily accessible and very well made, unique sprite reskins and soundfiles to customize the binding of isaac to your tastes. Just got into isaac but feel a little overwhelmed with all game mechanics and items? Front page of the steam workshop is an ingame item descriptor that seamlessly scales with modding support. You really like the core design of the bionding of isaac but don't know why edmun mcmuffin made some of the stupidest game design choices you've ever seen? Hundreds of overhaul and quality of life mods that significantly reduce burnout that you can swap on and off with a click of a button for different characters. Oh and did I mention, you get all of this, for free. No battlepass, no subscription fee, no ingame cosmetics, no triple A studio bullshit, just good game design. The game might stop getting updates from edmund but the modding community is going to keep this game alive for a decade at least, unless edmund makes something like the binding of isaac 2, but like that will ever happen, right?

I only have 250 hours over 8 months, but I think Isaac is one of two games thats hooked me as much as it. The other was Town of Salem, a few years ago during lockdown, where I probably had over 500, but it was social deduction and the player base started to die out with ToS2 and just generally over time. There's just so many possibilities with it, and you can never get the same run twice - plus with every character being so different, its really fun to just sit down and play for however long I need to after a stressful day or just simply enjoy and try to break, or just focus on trying to finish a run with someone like tainted lost - its so different than anything else that it has singlehandedly made me want to play just about only roguelikes. I still play some of the same stuff i used to, like your typical survival games or FPS games, but it is just about the only game thats made me crave it alone. Something about the mix of singleplayer, great music (especially some modded tracks, antibirth+ my beloved), simple yet always fresh gameplay, its somethin you can literally never find again. I've also tried RoR2 and Gungeon and while both amazing games that I've enjoyed what time I've spent in them, they always just aren't what I'm looking for, and I always just go back to Isaac. I've fallen in love with this game and I've been putting a lot of time into it recently compared to my usual lack of playing anything, and right now I'm trying to get as far as possible on the basement seed, rn I'm on Basement 155 - even being able to do dumb stuff like that is something you dont really find anywhere else. I'm glad someone else could put it into words, because I sure as hell cant

I 100% agree with you. This game feels pretty personal to me. Isaac was my first ever rougelike. I’ve seen brief glimpses of it throughout my younger years and something about it always intrigued me. I’m pretty sure it was the artstyle, cutesy looking characters that are also kind of morbid. I don’t remember when exactly, but it was sometime after the Afterbirth + expansion that I soon found myself watching countless videos on the game. I eventually bought it and fell in love with the game. I was patiently waiting for Repentance to release, and that dlc cemented Isaac as my favourite game. I’ve spent over 540 hours on the game and I see Isaac as a comfort game as well. I can just forget about my stresses and have a relaxing time with the game. Once I started installing mods, they made me love the game even more! Some notable mods to me being Fiend Folio, Revelations, and Fall From Grace. Any other rougelike I look at feels like it is missing something, or just isn’t that appealing to me. I think Isaac did this to me, like I’ve unconsciously used it as a standard for other rougelikes. I still love the game deeply, it has inspired me to become more creative and comforted me in times of need. Great video!

I think playing a game you enjoy too much can stop you from getting comfortable playing new games as well. When you play other games, it often takes a little while for you to adjust and start finding it really fun. When you know a game in and out, it starts to not necessarily be as fun as playing an entirely new game, but is still fun enough continuing to experience it that many just don’t feel the need to move on. This was my experience with The Binding of Isaac, and other games like Minecraft. I feel like a lot of the time i’ve spent playing both of those games were both incredibly fun, but also partially wasted. Now im realising I actually enjoy a lot of games that I never understood the appeal of like a lot of RPGs.

My experience with Isaac has been pretty much the same. Started playing the Flash version back in like 2012 with friends (one run each), and we sucked (partially because we were like 10 years old), so reaching Mom for the first time was an unforgettable experience. I forgot about its existence untill 2016, when I could finally buy a laptop for myself, sadly it was shit, so the only few games I could really play were Geometry Dash, Don't Starve and Isaac. In 2019 I could finally afford a better PC, and I forgot about Isaac again, untill 2021 when Repentance came out, and just like you, I spent most Zoom calls playing instead of actually listening to the teacher (that costed me my first semester of college, but it was worth it).

Isaac also took many attempts to hook me, and over numerous years. Once it did, I played it all the time for a year or two. Since then, I've introduced it to my nephews, and they'll still ask me to do a few runs with them when I see them, but I don't play it on my own anymore. I'd ultimately rather have truly new gaming experiences instead. But still, to get a few hundred hours of playtime out of me is a massive accomplishment, and I'm certain it'll be a game I'll return to for a long time. I'm kind of glad that it wasn't released when I was growing up, I probably would have never done anything else, and wouldn't have done all of the exploration of gaming and genres that I did at that time through to my young adulthood.

God, what a video. I honestly couldn’t relate more; flash Isaac is what introduced me to Roguelikes as a whole and was one of the very first PC games I’ve played. I remember struggling a lot with beating Mom. Then 6 years ago (I was 12 at the time and didn’t know better), I played a version of Afterbirth+ that I unfortunately pirated… but even though I never understood anything, the game was really fun. I never understood Apollyon, but he was my favorite for some reason. This was also the same time I started making videos on KZbin. For a while, I kind of just forgot about the game, and eventually deleted the pirated copies out of guilt. It wasn’t until 2023 that I found Rebirth in my girlfriend’s Steam library, and so I played some of it. It was good, but not the greatest experience; so she suggested I play Antibirth. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t my favorite take on Isaac ever. Sure, the new characters were a pain in the ass to play as, but having an entire alt path was just so nice. Then, after a while of playing Antibirth, I saved up enough money to get Repentance. I’ve been more than obsessed with the game since; it’s the most fun I’ve had in any Roguelike, and as you said, it’s hard for me to get into anything else. Now, I’m making my own Roguelike that is not only massively inspired by The Binding of Isaac (and D&D), but will include Edmund in the credits. So, TL;DR: I grew up playing Isaac, and would gladly sell my soul to repay Edmund for making it👍

Isaac being my first rogue like ever made me dislike rogue likes where you have limited item/equipment slots and items don't stack/synergize into crazy builds

For me, it was Hollowknight. The masterclass, perfected art style and detail in every bit opened a world up to me for all other games that the way things look or the cleverness and creativity of the design was a curse playing older games and games that weren’t as great as Hollowknight.

s/o game theory for getting me to check it out, with such a dark and obscure story I had to check it out. Once they added local Co op, my friend suggested we check it out and since I already had it we started playing blind and got hooked. #1 favorite game and I never thought that would happen 😅

One year later i played again for a few days and stopped again. Just in February this year i started playing again and realised that im either not as bad as i thought or i just got better at video games in general and now im trying my first dead god file (Curse jacob and esau though)

The Binding of Isaac is a game of thrilling highs and crushing lows. You haven't felt shame and despair until you've choked on Ultra Greedier, or gotten screwed at the Dark Room because you got your ass whooped by three Dark Ones at once. But, you also haven't felt the kind of happiness and accomplishment you get from beating Hush or Delirium for the first time. I can imagine that I'll be playing Isaac for a very long time, and I can't wait to get my third Hush victory and finally unlock the Repentance path.

Any tips on how to get started with isaac? I played it a couple of hours but all the items, hidden room and "secrets" are just so overwhelming.
@ZackLillipad5 ай бұрын
It is definitely very overwhelming. My tip would just be to pick one thing to focus on at a time. For example, focus on beating a certain boss, unlocking a character, or doing a challenge, etc. A lot of other things will get unlocked along the way as you do that and the game will really start to open up.

Yeah, this game is absolutely addictive. I have a similar story with it, playing Flash because it was all my college laptop could handle, then Rebirth on 3DS but I never quite understood how to progress and have goals, I just played it because it felt fun but then I dropped it for a while. When Repentance came out I watched a few youtubers/streamers playing it to see what's the new DLC like and I went back fully into it, now knowing what goals to strive for and getting good at it. 1600 hours in on Rep. alone, I just hope it doesn't stop being fun now that I'm close to 3rd dead god file, lol

This is a great explanation for a feeling that I have about roguelikes. I have 100%'d Rebirth four times now and I can't find a game that gives me the same gameplay/vibe that Isaac does. I get frustrated looking through Steam and Google trying to find an "Isaac-like" rather than a roguelike and that doesn't seem to exist yet..... If anyone in the comments has found an "Isaac-like" please let me know Im dying for another!
@Tired_Tortilla5 ай бұрын
about playing other rouges you should definitely stick with risk of rain 2 one of the main draws of the game as apposed to isaac is how items stack and how the games difficulty can be brutal after you get to playing the game on its eclipse gamemode where each time you beat it the game gets harder as new difficulty modifiers are thrown it to the point where beating it once is a major accomplishment

Funny what you said about playing other roguelike games before The binding of Isaac and you would have loved them. Literally that's what happened with me with enter the gungeon. Dude I loved that game so much and thought to myself that it was the best roguelike. Then I played The binding of Isaac and now when I open enter the gungeon I would just rather be opening The binding of Isaac. It's crazy.

Isaac has grown to become my favorite game ever too. I started it when Rebirth came out on the 3DS and WiiU and been playing ever since. Love it.

Huh, maybe I should try the game again. I played this, even beating it, and just did not have fun. It felt like rng was a bigger factor than my skill, unlike games such as hades and dead cells.
@ZackLillipad6 ай бұрын
Isaac does have a lot of RNG in terms of certain items appearing. But at a high enough skill level, any boss can be defeated with any item really (if that makes sense). I think giving it another chance could help, Isaac definitely takes a lot of patience early on!

I have the same problem as you with finding another game with this much replayability. And I've only been playing it since December 2021, clocking in at around 1100 hours now. Obviously multiplayer PVP games will have a high level of replayability, but I'm talking about single player games. Enter the gungeon is fun but it just doesn't do it the same way The binding of Isaac does. After 200 hours of EtG I was like yeah I'm good. I even went back and tried to play it today and I just wanted to play Isaac instead. Hades was fun but had even less replayability than etg I probably need to give dead cells another try because back when I played it, it had just released so it wasn't loaded with content like it is now. I've been thinking about playing darkest dungeon again. I don't think I really gave it a long enough try. It was fun but man it was punishing. I've tried playing stuff like skul, Dungreed, and revita but it just doesn't feel the same. It feels like some generic rogue-like.

Deus ex game of the year 1999. I remember when it first came out. It was mind blowingly good! Even today I'll still fire it up and play it. Graphics are dated, but the story is insane! Hands down the best deus ex. All you gen z's. If you want to try something different, give it a go. There are mods to modernise it a bit, but it doesn't make much difference. The game play is actually that good! But yeah... Isaac is sick too!
