Financial literacy is terrible in this country, being wealthy brings a whole new set of costs you would never experience being poor and so fail to account for. If you use the money to hire wealth advisors and accountants you may find yourself earning far more off of it and paying less (much less if you don't have any moral compunctions about tax avoidance). The best thing you can do if you suddenly come into a lot of money is to: 1. sort out immediate issues and debts 2. tie up the majority of your money in investments with some paying dividends to cover day-to-day expenses 3. create a small current account to treat yourself with and cover emergencies without being penalised from withdrawing funds from your investments. 4. forget you have the money and don't make significant changes to your lifestyle.

Yeah I've never quite understood why people totally equate looking after your family as kindness. It's being responsible, rather than being kind. Number 1 rule when winning a large prize - _don't tell anyone!_ Part of the reason that in places like Australia (and I think the UK?) you have the choice of remaining an anonymous lottery winner is that every Tom, Dick & Harriet crawls out of the woodwork looking for handouts. It's honestly revolting what people will do when money is involved, and it pays to know who you can truly trust. Sad to say, Michael's story isn't uncommon for a large lottery winner... so at least he's fortunate to have a somewhat happy ending.

@@slysampss There's no catch from a tax perspective as your anonymity is purely in the public record - the winnings are still income that you need to pay tax on. The question around tax is generally whether you take the winnings in one lump sum, or as instalments over several years & spread your tax liability out. For very large amounts the lottery operators may try to get you to take instalments because it suits them to pay it out over time, but ultimately it will be taxed one way or another. You're not anonymous to the tax department or your bank... only the public. And since the tax office, banks, lawyers, accountants, etc have strict confidentiality obligations, the only other people who _should_ find out are those _you_ tell or possibly give yourself away to (if you're suddenly flashing lots of wealth).

On the flipside I remember in the 90's someone had won the California lottery. I forgot how much, it wasn't the crazy numbers you see now for jackpots but it was in the millions. The big story on all the news networks was that no one had claimed it and it had been weeks since the draw. A news crew turned up at the convenience store where the ticket was purchased at and was interviewing the owner and the clerks. Some well dressed old dude was at the counter paying for something and said that's me you are looking for. Everyone laughed thinking he was joking until he pulled the ticket out of his wallet and showed it to them. They asked why he hadn't claimed it yet and he told them that he had not had the time and will get around to it eventually. They asked what he was planning on doing with the money and he said he was just going to add it to the pile at the bank. The dude was just some local billionaire in Newport Beach and viewed the winnings as chump change. The story got dropped by the press like a hot potato and I never heard another peep about it other than some time later a Simpson's episode had Monty Burns doing something similar.

This apparently happens every time someone (particularly from the working-class) wins the multi-million jackpot. Most people don't know how to handle that sort of money & they think it will last forever. So the same stuff happens: big donations to family and spouses, 80% separate from their spouses now they feel truly financially independent (sometimes with a costly divorce), then multiple houses & cars. The houses are the killer - you need loads of furniture, BIG council tax & other bills..they make money disappear really fast. The Lambourghini, of course, loses it's value as soon as you buy it. They quit their jobs. Now of course in some economic climates interest or dividend payments can provide sufficient income to live on...if you don't touch the invested sum. But this rarely seems to work out

My wife was the personal assistant for a guy who won the lottery about 10 years ago. He took home over 95 million dollars. He was very generous to his immediate family and friends, sadly the money just brought out the worst in all of his brothers and sisters etc. Greedy, thankless turds is how his siblings turned out, sad. He has built up the winnings and never ended up in the pages of the National Enquirer or on The Steve Wilko’s show (Steve isn’t trashy, just the guests are l). At least if you're wealthy, you can find ways to escape the misery. There's no good reason for people failing to make the best use of these windfalls. 70% of people who get that kind of money end up broke or worse, and it doesn't have to be that way. Shit, you don't even need to go to school to learn that; just playing a resource management board game like Monopoly or Catan is enough to impart that lesson, and it's evident even the man himself knew it was a good idea since he _attempted_ (keyword) to put some of it away in investment for income. But still: Advice and guidance may have helped and mitigated some of the money problems he had, but those would still be hampered by a core obstacle that isn't so easily changed. Which would be his innate impulsiveness and lack of self restraint. As evidenced not only by how poorly he handled his money and how he kept taking out of his own fucking investment, but also how very short sighted and poorly thought out a LOT of his personal decisions were such as in that bar fight, his shoplifting, and skipping fare seemingly just on impulse alone.

I hope your foster carer was decent. My wife and I are foster care providers and I've seen some sad stuff within the government and care providers. I just wanted to provide what I never had as a kid, and teach my own kids how to embrace and support others. We are all one big family, I really believe. My most painful moment as a kid was when I hung out with a girl who was the same age as me (8) and we spent a whole day playing, went and visited her uncle, etc. By time we got back home it was dark. There was about 100 people looking for her.... Then the crowd dissipated, and I was left, alone. No one was looking for me. No one cared. It hurt pretty bad, still does to be honest. I just want to be that person who gives a shit about you or anyone else who was abandoned or thrown away. Peace.

@@finished6267 Would love to say they were, I bounced from carer to carer, out of the frying pan into the fire. Physical and mental abuse was pretty rife. Had one carer steal every penny I had in my savings account, even worse that she did it by coercing another foster kid into walking into the bank pretending to be me (there was a whole police case when i left that carer and realised she'd rinsed my account, though strangely the local authorities let her keep on fostering). Did eventually meet nice carers in my late teens though, just wish it'd happened sooner. warms my heart though to hear you talking about wanting to help kids and provide, wish more carers got into it for that reason. Keep up the good work and give those kids a bright shining future friend!

That's a really tragic story. I have a lot of sympathy for people who have such rough starts in life and basically no role models to speak of. I can't blame the guy for not knowing how to act in a civilized society or for behaving in such an escapist way for being thrust into the spotlight with that amount of money at such a young age. It was beyond cruel what most of his family did to him and what the public at large felt they had the right to do to him. I probably wouldn't have wanted to be the guy's neighbor, but I wouldn't have gone out of my way to be cruel.
