It's so fascinating how despite being a Lego property, Bionicle has evovled to become it's own self sustaining ecosystem. Even though we say we've wanted more from Lego, Bionicle has the ability to survive without it. I think that's a testament to how pure in interest there is to continoue the legacy and story. Few if any franchises can boast that sort of versatility and timelessness.
@Makutros
@Makutros Жыл бұрын
Yeah... Lego is currently not interested in Bionicle. But the designers tried their best with the parameters given. GWP don't have budget to have a lot of printed or new/remade pieces. So doing it accurately was already impossible from the beginning. I got my Tahu today and I am happy with him. Lego seems to not have interest in Bionicle. And by now I doubt whether a Bionicle without Faber or Farshtey could actually work. Bionicle G2 had good sets, but the marketing and story were lacking. It didn't seem to have a fixed creative vision. A lot of people working on it were not familiar with the source material. The story itself was a repeat of the first five story years compressed into two years, but without any of the mythological aspects that made early Bionicle compelling, nor the Sci-Fi elements that made later Bionicle. Faber worked on G2 in the beginning but left the project. Some of his ideas made it into the final product, but they were so distorted that the intention of these ideas were barely recognizable. It's so strange. Does The Lego Group understand Bionicle? There are people working for Lego that actually were Bionicle fans, like the people designing this GWP. But the people making business decisions seem not so fond of it. Not that hard to see why. Bionicle's popularity continuously dropped after the conclusion of the movie trilogy in 2005. It's expensive to produce and is not really that self-explanatory as other Lego products. Lego is a business and business right now means licenses, few original themes and focus on the Lego brick as part of the company's identity.

"Bionicle's popularity continuously dropped after the conclusion of the movie trilogy in 2005"? Really? I thought that 2006 and 2007 were super successful years.
@Makutros
@Makutros 10 ай бұрын
@@doktawhawee9870 So i looked into it a couple of times since then. 2002 was Bionicle's most successful year, 2003 Bionicle saved Lego despite a 20% drop in sales, simply because it was the only theme that year that was still making money. According to Wikipedia it stayed Lego's most successful theme every year until 2006. In 2004 the Lego Group reformated itself and started to focus more on the Lego brick and less on other projects, like for example the Bionicle movies. After that it gets more speculative. We know from Greg Farshtey that the decision to cancel Bionicle was made in 2008. We also know that before that the story team tried to make 2009 a hard reboot, until Greg Farshtey vetoed that idea. That must have been around 2007. So, why did that question to do a new story come up around 2007? Maybe because the Bioniclestory website and convoluted online serials popped up around that time, or maybe because the sales declined? I recently saw a comment under Nick from Planet Ripple's video (the comment is about a month old by now), where the commenter claimed to have seen internal documents which he or she supposedly got for a research paper (source of course questionable and not really credible because of that). The commenter claims that Bionicle G1 always had been successful and the sales of Lego action figures only dropped significantly once the CCBS building system was introduced in the second year of Hero Factory.

My honest opinion? They don't want to go through the effort of bringing back the Constraction system. I don't think it's either malice or stupidity, just a lack of willingness to bring back a system that basically died with its flagship theme. If they brought back Bionicle in its Constraction system form, they would solely be bringing back Constraction _for_ Bionicle, they wouldn't really be able to do anything else with it. The other three independent Constraction themes, Slizers/Throwbots, Robo Riders and Hero Factory, all failed or at best only managed to break even, and the tie-in sets for Chima and Star Wars were complete flops. Bringing it back would require all new tooling, I highly doubt they would have kept molds they had no intention of using again.

I feel like the bionicle fans that saw this incredibly well thought out set as a slap in the face are extremely close-minded. Lego cannot sell bionicle as a retail set because the last time they did that, "real" bionicle fans dumped on the product. They don't have the data to support the idea that bionicle can sell on it's own. Should they have locked it behind such a high price? Yes actually because of the way the gwp system works. It's shocking to me how people that were such super fans of bionicle in 2001, and are now fully grown adults, can act so childish even when presented with something that is purely meant to celebrate bionicle. This set was so jam packed with details and references to Bionicle not just as a toy, but as a fantastical world, I truly don't see how you missed that this set was made by bionicle fans, for bionicle fans.

Power Miners 3. Knights Kingdom 4. Hero Factory 5. Nexo Knights and 6. Chima I would add Ninjago,City,Marvel,DC, and Star Wars but due to complications I sorta outgrown those themes sadly even tho' as a Constraction ethusiast, the Ultrabuilds/Buildable Figures were my favorite guilty pleasures of LEGO Marvel,DC, and Star Wars since imo some of the Buildable Figures' parts would make nice parts or weapons for my Bionicle MOCs when I make them in the future, thanks to the help of eBay lol.

i think one of the reasons they did a GWP for Tahu is because they saw the Sakoda set had intrest, but not enough for it to be released as a set, Probably less risky for them to release it as a GWP since they get the money back on other sets anyway. They also didn't "Bring back bionicle" They just made a set as a throwback to the bionicle line such as the classic space and classic castle GWPs, if they bought the bionicle line back for real we'd have had a whole line of toa. The Set had to also be bricks since they're not going to be bringing back molds that haven't existed since at least 2006. I do agree with lego neglecting their historically important lines and chasing profits, like legit the only original lines i see nowadays that lego puts out is city, technic and ninjago, its all just licensed themes. they're obsessed with licensed themes now rather than original IPs because Licensed themes are safer for them because the brand is already successful to lego if they're contacting lego to make sets of their IP.

"G2 which was the laziest..." outside of set design (and maybe the books, haven't gottne to them yet) I agree. But the set designs are pretty solid, imo. I'm mixed on the system set. I think the design is neat, considering there are a lot of parts that they couldn't remake...but the gwp method was really weird. It seemed to be motivated to try to get Bionicle fans into those other themes...but it just feels like a miss. nd I can't help but wonder if it would've sold more by being a standalone set on shelves or online. As for the design itself...I'm still trying to figure out when I can get one aftermarket, budget-wise. Its just sad to see such a departure from both form and function when technic gear featured + mixel joints is a longstanding moccing concept( I was copying designs I saw melding the 2 back in 2014, though lego would rather make posable statues than action figures.

Honestly imo the gwp set is better than the original line it’s based on. It’s better built and has much more pose ability. The main reason why Lego won’t bring Bionicle back a second time is because of the failed reboot. Lego ended the theme in 2010 the first time when it was still moderately successful and profitable, specifically for other retailers. Which made it easier to convince them of the reboot. However because the reboot was such a financial loss, trying to convince retailers to sell Bionicle a third time would probably be next to impossible. The brand has been tarnished in the eyes of those businesses

Here’s the deal with this one. For a multitude of reasons, I don’t think bionicle would work in the current toy market climate as far as young buyers. The only way it would make money is from old fans, who want it for nostalgia purposes. This would never be a line. It could only have ever been some kind of one off set. The reality is it would not be profitable for Lego to have machines built to make constraction pieces because Lego has already retired them and probably scrapped the machines to mold them. Usually as that may have a couple new uniquely molded pieces, but this would literally be an entire set of new unique molds. That would only get used once. I do not agree with Legos choice to make it a gift with purchase, but other than that this is probably the best they can do that makes sense for them.
@Bionickpunk

Bionicle would most likely thrive as a franchise if it wasnt just a Lego IP. Lego is notorious at putting their own themes down under, not properly utilizing their full potential. Just imagine, a line of Bionicle model kits done by Bandai, or detailed collector models, or a comicbook series done by IDW, DC, Marvel, or any manga creator, or animated series, etc. The sky is the limit with this IP, and yet Lego is squandering it. I wish it was in public domain by now, fans have shown to care more about the IP than Lego at this point, may as well allow them to get payed for their efforts as well instead of constantly tip toeing over copyright legality issues with Lego.

Bionicle vould work I think even in the modern toy market. However after watching this video I think I'm confident in that I don't want LEGO to touch the franchise again. They don't care enough to invest in it even if it was a system line. This is the entire reason Bionicle under LEGO won't work again, LEGO won't properly fund the marketing to make people/kids want constraction. I don't think the gwp being system is as big a problem as the video makes it out to be, what riles me up more is definately how coordinated and malicious the likely intent of the gwp was. So no I do not want a company that does this to its fans to handle Bionicle

That's fair, but if they really cared it wouldn't be a GWP, a sales driver. This could've and should've been on store shelves instead.

It's been six years since I've been wondering why LEGO completely blows off fans of technical buildable figures. I'm not just talking about BIONICLE. LEGO killed the entire building system. Since the withdrawal from the idea of releasing buildable Star Wars figures, not only have we not gotten any BIONICLE or HF-style figures, but we no longer get any parts that we need to build our own MOCs. No armour, no heads, no masks, no limbs... Only the Ninjago mech weapons and technic panels, which, combined with the last remaining ball joint bricks, keep the prices of our most important bricks on Bricklink relatively stable. And here comes my question: if LEGO is so stubbornly unwilling to bring back either BIONICLE or any of its related series, why don't they at least release something in the style of LEGO Classic, but with CCBS-like elements that would allow us - fans of this specific LEGO building system - continue to create the things that drew us to start buying bricks?

The Brick out room did a Bionicle themed video, a bit based on the fall of Brionicle and a bit of the history. @Ourtoyworld did you already do a historical video on Bionicle ? Because - I’ve been a LEGO fan all my life and have seen Bionicle In stores and never paid attention to that line or it’s cartoons. Can you or anyone please explain how Bionicle became so popular, yet I never really seen or heard of it being so relevant to Lego over the years.

A lot of this just sounds ungrateful and misunderstanding of Lego's intent. It takes millions of dollars to recreate molds that they destroyed years ago because they no longer served a purpose, and you want Lego to bring them back for one celebratory set *as a bare-minimum requirement??* I'm really sorry that the past few homages have only ever been brick-based, but I promise you they were done to not break the bank - not because they don't care. I understand that the brick-based puritans used to bully Bionicle, and I'm lucky to have not been exposed to that scrutiny during my time with it - but please be mindful of how you perceive the world, and make sure you don't end up internalizing your grievances & lashing to people who probably don't deserve it. Corporations aren't your friend, but neither are they all man-eating sharks that you always need to be wary of. Not every business decision Lego makes is done to make fun of you or pretend you don't exist. I'd go as far as to say none of what they do is done to be lazy or make fun of you! They probably made the brick-based Tahu a GWP because they knew they would fly off public shelves and *stay* off shelves indefinitely. At least this way, they can control the supply & demand better. Based on how strong things are going, I'd say Bionicle is better off without Lego, anyway. It's a miracle that this brand still has a life force beyond the toy shelf, which tells me that it doesn't need toys to validate its existence, anymore. What little official tribute they do get is just nice little icing to a legend that served its purpose. I dunno. Maybe I truly don't understand the frustration. But that's maybe because I did something you may consider heresy... *I moved on.*

It's very probable indeed that Bionicle didn't come back in a constraction form because LEGO scrapped constraction systems entirely following the simultaneous failures of G2, the second wave of Chima ultrabuild sets, and the Star Wars ultrabuild sets. All of these failures were on LEGO themselves, and not constraction as a whole; but ultimately, the simple fact alone that constraction literally no longer exists in a current form means describing a system Bionicle set as "blasphemy" comes off as not only single-minded and mulish, but frankly _entitled._ With that one point alone, I could tell why this video had a disproportionately high dislike:like ratio.

Bionicle is THE WORST Lego theme of all time. Period. It (as well as some other themes) single handedly almost bankrupted the number 1 toy company in the world. And on top of all of that, the builds are awful at best using a completely new system which didn't work at all with system. Pirates was the rightful winner of the 90th anniversary set.
@Makutros
@Makutros Жыл бұрын
You do know that Bionicle was the most profitable Lego theme between 2001 and 2005, right? Alongside Star Wars and Harry Potter it was one of the few themes that actually sold well. If Lego hadn't randomly brought up Bionicle in the early 2000s the company would probably not have made it, as the other themes just mentioned were products where Lego had to pay more money for the licenses than they eventually profited from the sells. The rightful winner of the 90 years vote (before castle took over) was iIrc space. Pirates already had the Barracuda bay, which is still within a reasonable price range compared to original pricing.
@Ayden_77

@@Makutros Pirates of Barracuda Bay wasn’t a 90th anniversary set, also bionicle introduced way to many new pieces which is the reason lego almost went bankrupt.
@Makutros
@Makutros Жыл бұрын
@@Ayden_77 No, Barracuda Bay was not an anniversary set. But it was pretty much the same in concept. A big adult collector's set representing the theme. Now Space, Castle and Pirates all have one such set. Pirates and Castle also currently come in Lego creator sets. It is not as though Lego is punishing Pirates fans right now, despite losing the vote. The only difference is that they got their big collectors set a couple years earlier, what probably could also have been a reason why adult collectors voted for other themes despite liking Pirates. If Bionicle was that bad for Lego's business it wouldn't have continued for 9 years (longer than any other original fantasy theme until Ninjago came along) be replaced by a successor theme and then come back 5 years later.
@Ayden_77
@Ayden_77 Жыл бұрын
@@Makutros True, they all do have a large set for each respective theme, but the creator sets don’t do Castle and Pirates justice. Lego creator is taking over Lego’s original ideas and only giving us ships and castles. That is not all we want from a pirates and castle wave, we want other things too. Also, the original pirates run lasted 8 years, plus the 2009 reboot that lasted 2 years and the 2015 one that lasted 1 year, so pirates in total lasted 12, 3 years longer than Bionicle.
@Makutros
@Makutros Жыл бұрын
@@Ayden_77 Took me a while to get what you meant with the second point. I didn't consider Pirates to be a original fantasy theme. I was talking more about the themes with original story, like Knights Kingdom, Chima, Mixels, Exorforce, Atlantis, Nexo Knights, Hero Factory and so on. For me Pirates files under classic theme. The only point I was trying to make is that Bionicle was profitable, at the very least at the time when Lego was truly in financial danger. Though Lego had expected that Galidor would the big success and not Bionicle. And probably lost a lot of money because of that.
