Luc Besson started writing this when he was 15, so it helps to see this movie as a coked up vision of a 15 year old boy's sci-fi fantasies 😂

I think they just told Gary to think of your most absurd American accent and run with it. Also this film is 28 yrs old in 2024 not 18. In many ways this movie shouldn't work but it just does and you can just pop in and watch the craziness of it to relax and laugh. Props to Jean Paul Guiltier for the avant guard costume designs.

Leeloo was the being in the sarcophagus we saw at the beginning. The hand that was rescued in the future wasn't one of the alien's hand. It was hers.

I agree absolutely. The style, the creativity of set design and outfits, the story, the extreme characters and personalities, it all works. I love this film. There is nothing else quite like it. It's a magical film in many ways.

i think I saw somewhere that Eric Serra (the guy who did the music for this film) wasn't super familiar with operatic singing before he wrote the opera song. So he wrote out this crazy vocal part that he thought would be impossible and he would have to do a bunch in post to make work. He was shocked when the opera singer could basically sing all of the parts (you can hear the couple parts that they had to edit). Also, I think Chris Tucker stole every scene he was in. 10/10.

This movie is a lot on a first watch but it’s been a favorite of our family for years, and we quote it often. I love the opera scene and fight scene mashup. Leeloo is by far my favorite character and I have several pieces of cool movie artwork from this film.

2:04 I was in engineering school when this movie came out. Before we watched it, all of my friends were trying to figure out why they’d make a movie about boron (the 5th element in the periodic table). I kept telling them it must refer to the four classic elements (earth, wind, fire, and water) but they’d never heard of those and just blew me off as someone who didn’t know anything. Needless to say, I felt vindicated when we finally saw the movie (and somehow managed to avoid saying “I told you so” which is probably the reason I’m saying it here 30 years later).

10:40 A lot of people miss this, but the Mondoshawan are the "people" in the suits. On Earth they picked up four stones and a sarcophagus, the fifth element. The hand they saved was the hand from that sarcophagus - not from one of the guys in the suits.

That's true, but I meant more like how Korben didn't know he'd won until het got his pipe letter, or how he wasn't listening to the radio, that kind of information would just appear in our phones with social media. But I agree Ruby Rod is as Insta as Insta can get lol

Aaand another person who enjoyed the movie. Good. :) It's one of my all time favourites for sure. Here's a little cultural background for you, if you're interested: Fifth Element is as close as you can get to a great comic book movie without having an original comic. :) There is no "Fifth Element" comic this has been based on. But it totally is dedicated to the work of one great comic book artist and both the looks and the atmosphere are heavily influenced by one of his more famous creations. The artist is Jean Giraud, AKA "Moebius", one of the many artists in the very active French comic book scene. And the series the costumes and general design of the world comes from is "The Incal", a really fantastic and weird scifi saga. Korben Dallas has inheritet a bunch of his characteristics from that series' hero "John Difool" for sure. And the fashion you see on the cruise ship, the plastic shells Zorg and some other people wear on their heads... That's all Incal. I don't know whether Luc Besson initially wanted to to an adaptation of the Incal but then settled on instead doing his own story in a world inspired by it or if that was the original plan from the get go, but it's one big loveletter to Moebius for sure. Even better: He got the man to work on the movie with him. Nice. :) btw: Moebius definitely was one fascinating artist. Not only was he highly regarded in the French and Euro comic scene, but he made it across the ocean too - he did a legendary Silver Surfer album for Marvel, he worked on the design for Tron and - while Swiss artist Giger created all the alien stuff - worked on some of the human props for Alien, like the spacesuits of the Nostromo crew. There's a very good documentary about his life and work you can watch right here on youtube, "Moebius Redux". kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqWcaqOuo9Z6i9U

Chris Tucker makes this movie for me. Without him it would be good but not great. I forget what year it was but PG13 wasn't a thing till the 90"s. So you only had PG or R for movies. No gratuitous sex and minimal cursing = PG.

Its not a bad movie. Yes, it has parts that havent aged particularly well but that doesnt make it bad. Its campy sci-fi but i wouldnt say it was "aimed at kids". It just doesn't take itself too serious and some people dont like that...but its fine

I do find it odd so many people seem to come out now-a-days and say this is a "bad" movie. Is it cliched? Sure, but it is such a fun time, it's not trying to be a "masterclass" in writing or be pretentious and above it all and I know I am alone in this but.....I would much rather watch this movie than ANY of the Star Wars movies.

I remember the Siskel and Ebert ep reviewing this. They mostly loved it but thanks to Chris Tucker (they said he was a "bit much), they were both on the fence recommending it. (They settled on one thumb up, one down). It's absolutely beautiful tho. And it's always fun listening to the Diva Pavalaguna (The only Blue Life that matters) and trying to figure out when they switch from digital to her real voice and back again. Also JUNGLE BOY IS LUKE PERRY'S KID?!?! Now I need him to team up with my favorites even more! (All Ego and Orange Cassidy)
