9:36 I think that the reason why this scene was silent was because this was an early horror movie. At the time of this release, Alfred Hitchcock was probably one of the few well-known directors who made horror/thriller movies. The average moviegoer wasn't used to seeing the image of a bloody corpse with it's eyes pecked out lying on the floor, and the shock was probably intense enough for most people. They didn't actually need scary sound effects of dramatic music to scare people with this kill.
@simplewormonastring68692 ай бұрын
I honestly think it was scarier without the music. It makes it feel real, if you walked into a room to find a dead body when you weren’t expecting one, there would not be music, you probably wouldn’t even scream, you’d just be shocked for a hot second. It makes the scene feel real.

It’s awesome. Yes, it’s dated in ways (it’s nearly 60 years old though so that can’t really be held against it), but at its core it’s still a great movie with a unique plot and well-written characters. I saw it for the first time around 2009 when I was in high school, and I was still impressed by how well it held up. I’m actually kinda surprised it was allowed to be shown in school considering the scene of the man with his eyes pecked out. It’s pretty graphic.

While I understand being upset over Melony seemingly acting "weaker", nows a good time for a friendly reminder that strong female characters can still be strong and have moments of weakness. She'd been through so much at this point, it's understandable that she'd be in shock. Strong characters don't have to be strong all the time to be considered such.

Its a good tactic to scare the audience . Like Ripley finally being alone on the escape pod at the end of Alien (she was almost hyperventilating) the plot builds a character that seems unshakeable, and then finally shakes them at the climax. I think you should give Tippi Hedren’s character arc a second chance. I understand what you’re saying about how the story took a strong willed woman and made her weak and frail. But put it in the context of the birds in the novel, which were really an allegory for the war planes that were flying overhead. What her character arc is showing is really the ravages of war. How war can beat down even the strongest person sometimes.

Interesting comment !
@thingthang29043 жыл бұрын
For me personally, it's the trope of the man taking over that bothers me. It takes away from the focus of her being worn down because the stakes around her don't change along with her (because when she gets weak, the man takes over so she remains protected even if she can't protect herself). It would've been far more impactful, in my opinion, if the birds killed Mitch and she left with the other two Brenners, a shell of the character she was in the beginning. With Mitch there, it's as if none of her breakdown matters since he can take care of everything.
@goawayleavemealone28803 жыл бұрын
@@thingthang2904 - Just because you're a Feminist doesn't mean that the misogyny you so desperately crave is everywhere you look. For all of his failings Hitchcock was extremely adept at creating complex female characters, who were actually strong and independent - instead of just acting strong and independent when it wouldn't be inconvenient. Melanie is broken by her circumstances not because men willed it because they hate her... or whatever stupid thing you think. Also I'm not saying this because you're a woman, if you were a male Feminist it would still be a brain meltingly stupid observation.
@thingthang29043 жыл бұрын
@@goawayleavemealone2880 I'm not a woman and I'm not a feminist so there goes that. Every assumption you made (both about my character and my argument) is off. I never said Hitchcock didn't write female characters well. I didn't even say he wrote Melanie poorly. I never said Melanie is broken because of some man (nor do I believe it). I said that Mitch taking over and becoming a solution to Melanie's obstacles takes away from the impact that her breakdown has. Melanie gets weaker but the stakes hit a wall with Mitch there saving her. The trope doesn't bother me just because it's a trope. It bothers me because it becomes too convenient to the plot for my liking.

Additionally, given that Tippi Hedren was being terrorised bully the director irl its absolutely reasonable that it’d affect her acting.

When audiences left the U.K. premiere at the Odeon, Leicester Square, London, they were greeted by the sound of screeching and flapping birds from loudspeakers hidden in the trees to scare them further. Sir Alfred Hitchcock revealed on The Dick Cavett Show (1968) that 3,200 birds were trained for the movie. He said the ravens were the cleverest, and the seagulls were the most vicious. It is never revealed why the birds started attacking people.

It isn't that people weren't rude and demeaning there's just a HUGE censorship on a lot of stuff in old movies by Will Hayes and what is now MPAA (but like it was different but I forgot it's name) at the time who was a bit of a stick in the ass.
@GoatPopsicle4 жыл бұрын
Kiammyfy you are confusing the image of society people liked portrayed in movies back then, with the reality that people have never changed and that era had more crime than our current era. The only difference now is that every butthead has a platform to spew their hate and anger, when before they would mostly be limited to their immediate circle or political party.

I have to commend you for this video. You brought the entire movie back to life as well as placed it in the context of the times (with appropriate humor). My parents did not allow me to see this in the theatre. When I finally did get to see it, it was the scariest movie I had ever seen. But what I didn't realize until now was how intricate and inventive was the plot also. This is what movie making is all about. Unquestionably one of the greatest movies ever made, IMHO.

On an episode of Eli Roth’s history of horror they were talking about the birds and I think they talked about how Melanie’s arc was in a way a metaphor for women in the 60s to be housewives and not have any sort of development of sorts if you know what I mean. When I saw this movie my dad didn’t tell me it was a thriller/horror movie. He told me it was a romance movie. I already hated crows and he knew it. I was scared to even walk near birds for a month. I love the movie though. Edit: he just told me that I saw the name Alfred Hitchcock and said “doesn’t he make horror movies?” He then replied “no he makes thriller movies but this is one of his only non thriller movies.” AND I BELIEVED HIM. This is before I had seen Psycho. I guess I should have caught on when my mom died laughing when he made up that lie. 😂
