I feel so sorry for Shelley Duval. She suffered a lot of mental health issues and I believe filming The Shining definitely had a long term impact on her mental health. I think she just said "It was for the best for the sake of the film," for the cameras, and tried to convince herself it was worth it when it wasn't.

Anyway it wasn’t bad acting. She just ended up playing a character that the audience didn’t like. However, I think she did it fairly convincingly. American audiences (especially back then) tend to like strong characters and plot lines that are neatly tied up, and expect to see people they would like in real life as protagonists in movies. In this movie, Wendy is a wimpy and wishy-washy person who was affected by her isolation and of course the haunted hotel where she lives. She was deeply in denial about her husband and then basically broke down when it all fell apart. People like to see stronger characters who are admirable in some way, and they took it out on her as an actress.

Wendy was more proactive in the book but I think by making the character more vulnerable and terrified while still piecing herself together enough for her son makes for more tension. Shelley Duvall's performance helped make this movie so uncomfortable, suspenseful, and iconic, but she got the backlash for portraying a scared woman. Honestly, we can't win. Either we play nuanced subversive roles and get shit on for "pandering" to social justice warriors or we play more traditional roles of women in film and get shit on for being stereotypes.

I mean, in the end they supposedly worked things out and agreed it was acceptable to get the final result they wanted, but jesus christ. You can see it ALL on her face in tons of scenes. And I never got the whole "She's a horrible actress who almost ruins the movie" garbage some people say about her. I think without her the movie doesn't work. To this day she doesn't get the recognition she deserves for that role. Other than the usual BS of she sucks and all that.

Even Jack who was pretty chill about the insane lengths Kubrick would go to even called him out and told him to lay off during the kill scene when he saw how bad Scatman was. Though the kid was freakin' coddled. Holy crap. He never knew he was in a horror movie the entire time. I'll give Kubrick points on that, but otherwise, the dude was a creatively brilliant jacka**. Somebody summed it up best: "He's brilliant, the movie is amazing, and it was an honour to work with him... and I never want to do it again."

as someone who recently read the book and watched this movie i can see why king didnt like this movie initially, it leaves so much left out from the books, especially the characters thoughts, jacks in particular, they give jacks deteriorating sanity more meaning and purpose instead of him being drunk and calling it a day like the movie does, in the book, jacks constantly fighting off the overlooks influence in his mind to the detriment of his sanity and the advantage of the overlook, and jacks past is an interesting one that i think we shouldve gotten to see in the film, and when reading i could tell it wouldve been great as a tv series where more things could be fleshed out and detailed.

Because the film is different from the book doesn’t intrinsically make the changes in the film worse. You just preferred how King told the story of The Shining better, which is completely fine, but that’s still you’re opinion & still doesn’t make Kubrick’s directing any less. What the film lacks, it makes up for in different ways. Kubrick’s Shining is still a ambiguous, multifaceted, psychological rollercoaster with metaphorical symbolism for the human experience. It has realistic depictions of a abusive relationship mixed with the visual storytelling & subtext, it’s a masterfully crafted film, it has more artistic liberties than King’s book, which in my opinion, while still a very great pulpy horror story, isn’t a masterpiece.

I think a huge part of what makes The Shining so terrifying is that we never get a full explanation of what exactly is going on at The Overlook. Often times the mystique of supernatural horror films is lost once of the generic tragic ghost backstory is revealed, i.e. The Conjuring. The simple sense of wrongness of The Overlook and the incredibly disturbing imagery is enough to get us terrified. All we need to know is that The Overlook is somewhere you don't want to be. I love that we never get a full explanation of what exactly is going on here.

I think it has something to do with cutting things from the book. I may be mixing the book up with another of King's works (it's been a minute since I read it), but if I recall correctly Jack was much more charismatic in the book. It also doesn't have certain flashbacks the book has, and I think it removes the "softer" side of Jack. I also wish they had included the hedge animals, I found those scenes in the book to be beautifully tense. And they did Halorann dirty in this adaptation.

@@MovieFan1912 When you take into account that much like Jack Torrance (and Dan for the first few chapters of "Doctor Sleep") in the book, Stephen King himself was an alcoholic (he's been sober since at least 1990), I have this theory that some of King's disdain for Kubrick's adaptation is a bit personal. King once talked about the irrational anger he harbored during his drinking days in the late 70s and 80s. While King never laid physical harm towards his wife and kids like Jack did, the thoughts were still there and he felt compelled to write those down in the book; hoping that they would go away. After the incident where Jack broke Danny's arm, the book goes into excruciating detail about how he tried to be kinder to Danny and Wendy before the winter stay. And thanks to Danny's shining, he knows that his father's efforts are real and that it is the hotel that is fuelling Jack's insanity. In the movie, Jack Nichol-Torrance just seems to be on edge the moment we meet him and he really doesn't appear to care for his family before he goes off the edge and tries to kill them. Maybe that was Kubrick's interpretation but I understand why that rubbed King the wrong way.

She was a known basketcase. Perfect for the movie but not for a solid career. Her odd looks and bug eyes were always her best attribute but I never understood it. Although I also appreciated her in Popeye.

evilangel7769 She might’ve not been the best actor but verbally abusing her and deteriorating her mental health is way to much. Criticism is different from being mean, if she really wasn’t ready for the roll they should’ve said something and give her criticism but instead they took her, bullied her, and caused her to be sick multiple times on set, and even after the film she got so much hate when she was pushed SO hard to get these scenes perfect. Her health even kept deteriorating after the movies because of what happened and no one helped her. She may have been a bad actor but she’s still human.

I appreciate all the work that goes into these Kill Counts, especially when they’re half an hour long. If you've ever shot a video for a school project or something, you know how many times you might have to re-shoot a scene. So I think of all the stuff James had to cut, and how amazing it still is. I'm always excited when I see a new Dead Meat video drop, and James finally covered one of my favorites! I've recently gone back to watch many of the Stephen King movie adaptations, and I think they might suit a Kill Count. Just a thought. Love you, James.

It is not at all the same as you staying up late and making a video for a school project… Yo suck the balls of this dude so much you don’t acknowledge the fact that he literally acknowledges his writer editor and all the people that help him?
