It seems mispronouncing words is pretty common for me! (Ivanhoe) I used Fritz Lang's German pronunciation in this video, pronouncing it as Long, instead of Lang. You should have seen me pronouncing noir in the mirror over and over again before recording! Still, I appreciate any corrections (historical or otherwise) and thank you all for coming to the movies with me :)

What really matters is trying. What works for me is saying 'NOIR' as NWA/NWAR in one breath. But NOO-AR also works, I guess.

@@andreiiliepopescu6393 thank you for the encouragement haha. It’s frustrating to mispronounce so many words.

Fred McMurray played WALTER Neff, not William. I can hear Barbara Stanwyck's voice saying that name "Walter/Walter" and then Edward G. Robinson addressing Walter.

Great video, only issue I noticed was near the beginning where, for a moment, the music was a bit too loud compared to the narration

Great video! My only suggestion would be to mix the music so that it doesn't overwhelm your voice.

Hey man great vid. I was just bothered by the audio quality of your narration it is so quiet. Turn the volume up man i wanna hear what u tryna say. And also the background music is louder than your narration. GREAT VIDS!!! WILL STILL WATCH YOUR CHANNEL :))

Great video, aside from the overpowering music volume where I'll add my voice to the chorus. Try some European stuff - James Mason in Odd Man Out (1947), also Ascenseur pour l'échafaud from 1958 is really classic noir even though it's quite late - fantastic Miles Davis score too.

I love both of those films! Louis Malle was one of the first directors I ever really dived deep into.

Interesting and informative. Music at the end is too loud, it's drowning you out a little.

0:18: I think historical epics imo are just as interesting. My favorite genre and they’re constantly coming in and out. Much to my chagrin because I want them to be made all the time 😅

I've never really had much use for the "neo" prefix, either. Is Justified a neo-western neo-noir, or is it just a good show that falls neatly into both categories? I argue the latter. Anyway, very nice meditation on noir. Well made.
@whenthepicturesgotbigger Жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words! Yeah, in general I find that categorizing films into small genres like that is not really effective but I know neo-noir is arguably even more popular than classic noir these days and so there must be something to that distinction, even if I don’t personally agree with it.

'Film Noir' isn't a genre, it's a style, perhaps a philosophical mindset of fate and predestination and a mood - which is why there were the occasional western, 'woman's picture' and fantasy film that belong to that category.. And it gets expressed through tough times. There are so many errors in this video that it's disconcerting. The studios didn't bring those directors to Hollywood, they migrated there after going through several European countries because of the rise of Hitler. Lang didn't make 'b' movies. Lang never made a 'b' but mid level films, Curtiz had been around since the silent period, Sternberg came with the Dietrich package after 'The Blue Angel'. The influence of German Expressionism came from the impact of Murnau's Fox super production 'Sunrise' (1927) and through Ford's 'The Informer'. Noir was a confluence of the burgeoning of hard boiled literature coming from the pulps to the slicks, the influx of immigrant directors (Wilder, Preminger, Siodmak), the impact of 'Citizen Kane' and 'The Maltese Falcon' in '41, and at RKO, where low-key lighting was so pictorially rich and expressive and yet fast to set-up and cheap. As for neo-noir, that is far more infused by the advent of post 1968 nihilism and existentialism, and modern degeneration and decay of common and timeless truths and values.
