I know this is a little bit of a different video for me, but I wanted to dip my toes into covering foreign films, and I felt this was a good way to start. As always, I'd love to hear thoughts and I hope you were able to learn something new!

Wow! Filmed for 1 year and the Soviet film chemists messed it all up! Those movie posters for the Apocalypse series are pretty cool! Hmm 7 days to get to the museum, and 7 days to get back? Not much time to look at the exhibits.

Fascinating video, I knew about the situation around Tarkovsky's Stalker but very little about Konstantin Lopushansky's films, they sound terrifying bleak.

Come and See (Иди и смотри 1986, dir. Elen Klimov): hold my beer. The director let a 13 year old boy go through the horrors of World War 2 firsthand. It was such a traumatic experience making the film that the director couldn't make himself make another film again.

Have you seen THE UGLY SWANS, which extends the apocalypse trilogy for a 4th film? It's streaming on YT.

I haven’t yet! I’ve heard it’s okay but maybe the weakest entry. Have you seen it or would recommend?

@@whenthepicturesgotbigger Yeah, definitely. I've only seen THE UGLY SWANS & RUSSIAN SYMPHONY, but I preferred SWANS. It is a more conventional sci-fi narrative, though.

Soviet war movies were also very dark and raw. It was interesting to see the contrast from US war movies.

I was born in 1961 and have always had post-apocalyptic dreams, filled with imagery of bleak industrial environments and polluted streams with bizarre items floating in them, or sitting in the silt at the bottom. When "Stalker" finally became available in the U.S., I sat transfixed. He had basically created a film that was illustrative of all my dystopian dreams over the decades. The feeling was bizarre and unsettling, but the film was an absolute masterpiece.

Crazy how the two titans are still butting heads. I dont know if it'd be better if this side or that side wins. Neo-realism states that "Might makes right" and power always inspires resistance. its a cycle humanity will keep repeating

You should read the book that inspired Stalker. It’s called “picnic on the side of the road”. Ignore any Soviet propaganda in it and it is a masterpiece in itself.
