We visited a natural pig ranch, where the sows are free to feed and the piglets are also given much more room to move. The loss from sows laying on the newborn piglets can be substantial, like losing 8 out of 10 piglets! Consider too, that the piglets are not guaranteed a warm place at birth in a natural environment. so many births are in early early spring, so it's not that warm anywhere. Also, consider how clean these sows and piglets are kept. (Cont.)

I understand what your trying to do, but in that stall the sow can't even turn around, you can do commercial pig farming, the right way not what's more convenient to your pig business bits what's good for the animal

(Cont.) In a natural environment, the sows and piglets run around in the same area (separate from other sows/piglets) for about 3 wks. During that time, the piglets are pretty busy eating all the time, or chasing the sow to get her to lie down and let them nurse. I suggest you go see for yourself first hand both methods before you judge. Commercial feeders and breeders dont want to upset and harm the pigs, they want them to be healthy and safe. Both methods are labor-intensive.

By the way, its a myth that the sows will accidentally lay down on their piglets. The sows are actually very careful when laying down.

This is a very well kept pig farm. There is our food crowing under good conditions. Safety for mother pig and babies.
