I've been to Dykhuis Farms. The family and farm employees care for their animals humanely and are excellent stewards of the land. The farm has not only a printed mission statement, but also a list of core values that focus on caring for people and the environment--so much that prospective employees line up at the door for spots on the staff. The family believes in using their gifts to enhance their community, and they walk the walk.

Manure storage is designed to minimize those gases. My family’s barns are flushed under those slats 6 times a day (think giant toilet) to remove all of the waste. Other designs fill part of that space under the floor with water capturing the gases, then that water is flushed out every 3 days or so and then refilled so there is always enough water to cover the manure. The wellbeing of the animals and workers are vitally important to us because they are OUR animals and well…we’re the workers!

I thank you for giving these animals a more humane life where they can practice normal behaviors compared to farrowing pens. I believe the aggressive behaviors that you have seen while in pens will improve with future generations. In Europe they have managed pigs for generations in pens. Compare that to the US where pork production has not even concidered selection for decreased aggression as every animal lived in isolation its whole life without asses to interact with others. selective breeding and environmental enrichment is the key. Dont know if its possible but considering a type of bedding that could encourage rooting.

Knud, I am a hog farmer and we only use antibiotics for a specific reason. We have a vet that oversees every drug we administer. There are different types of MRSA and MRSA in hogs and humans are not the same. And the research that has been done shows that there is NO increase in MRSA infection with those people who work with hogs. I am concerned about resistant bacteria also but am assured there is very little/no risk with hogs.

What about the gases from the decomposing manure stored under the barn? Doesn't that effect animal well being as well as the health of the workers?

Speedy Guy ~ I don't call keeping pigs confined to Gestation Crates and sending them off to slaughter very educational. Maybe in your eyes and heart you enjoy slaughtering animals. Whatever floats your boat Cheerios - get it ! P.S. You should not make it right by using God in it either.

People do know these pigs have little hair and sunburn right? Demanding these pigs to live outside makes about as much sense as stripping a human naked and telling them to go live out under the sun. More space would be nice, but they are comfortable.

Most of the dog meat sold in China are snatched pets. There are few farmers raising dogs for meat and dairy because they are hella expensive for their market return. It's easier and cheaper to just to hire a couple thugs to snatch one off the street...heaven help these thugs if they are caught, the Chinese people will wrap a rotting dog carcass around their necks, bind their hands, and flog them through the streets for it.

Instead of criticizing the company, compare them to other farms where conditions are much crueler. We should ask ourselves how we could make things better than just ripping on the farmers who make livelihoods off of these animals. It would be much more effective if we would think proactively instead of just commenting.

Funny how mad you can get when you gotta live cheek-to-jowl on top of eachother. I think I'd be poking out some eyes and biting off some tails, too, if I had to live in a gulag. Btw, prisons ain't known for their kumbaya, either. Incidentally, pigs have a biological drive to shuffle with their snouts. Just like ppl have a biological drive to talk and play Candy Crush and go to malls and whatever. So how do your pigs handle a biological need being so brutally thwarted? There's no hay in your concentration camp for them to root through. Smh. Maybe that's why they're "aggressive", my dear.

I just think its flat out too expensive to farm hogs this way, anyone can invest in a big barn, the problem is "anyone" has the right to do so, forcing each other into a cycle of non profitable farming-#1 solution-get out or increase herd size
@tonyclack59016 жыл бұрын
You don't look unintelligent, yet you follow the same rhetoric you have been taught, without questioning the ethics and cruel ways you produce pork. The first clue that something is not right, is the sows have no tails. As a golden rule, if you need to tail dock then your pig rearing practice is wrong. Pigs allowed to exhibit their natural behavior of rooting and running around do not tail bite. But in a stressful situation that your method of rearing creates, tail bitting would be prevalent. I rear pigs organically and have had no tail bitting ever. Ask yourself this question. How many entries do you have in your on farm drug book. I have none. Go and see an organic pig farm and then ask yourself, are we doing the right thing in our system.

Anna, All their videos are the same. They always show the nice part. They never show what goes on behind closed doors. I just hope they watch the workers too. They are so cramped together and never get to see daylight. How unfair is that, but they don't care as long as they bring them to have them slaughtered and make their profit. They need to get rid of those HOT BOX TRAILERS while they are sent off to be slaughtered, hung, throats slit, bleeding everywhere while fighting for their lives. Those trailers get entirely to hot but they don't care as long as they see profit. I ran into an x Farmer awhile back and he said he couldn't do it anymore because of the way they get slaughtered and the pain that goes on with them. So they gave them to a Sanctuary and now the animals are living a beautiful, happy,roaming free life, never to be confined again in gestation crates. Every farmer I met I knew ahead of time. But this was different he was kind hearted.

+Monica Rothbeck I know I'm well aware. It's terrible. I want to open an animal rescue and sanctuary when I get out of school so I've done research and seen videos on all kinds of animal abuse. Pigs love to graze, these animals will never go outside. They love to be scratched behind their ears and on their stomachs, and they will never recieve that kind of love. Its sickening how selfish and cruel people can be. I'm ashamed to be of the same species and that is very sad in itself.
@annafaith31328 жыл бұрын

O college boy. Yep pork management, that will sure tell you JUST what it is like on the farm. Other then that, do you have any clue why pigs arn't kept outside like cattle etc? Most people talk about how bad it is in a hog barn. Lets keep them outside, temp changes pigs are very temp sensitive. Rooting, a hog can destory grassland so they have to be rung. Yea living inside is so much worse then dealing with the heat, the cold, and havining 6 metal rings in your face.

Girl, this is not an upgrade in pig housing! Go and check FREERANGE. The US should start promoting small skale farmers again. More people would have jobs and when every Farmer keeps only a few pigs in more space things would be far better for everyone. People have jobs and better quality food, pigs have a far better life and soil and groundwater don't get polluted by huge amounts of dung
@monicarothbeck73938 жыл бұрын
dustinfisher29- Dustin~ They don't care one bit, as long as it's not them and the cash flow keeps coming in. So many piglets and pigs are going to die a horrific death and this goes on day after day after day. One person said it so true, it's like she was picking apples. She had no feelings whatsoever that these living beings were about to be sent to the slaughterhouse to be slaughtered. I would never be able to live around that enviroment. I would be out of there in a heartbeat. Pigs are very friendly and loving animals. Just to haul them off in a trailer and have them slaughtered is so mind boggling to me. They have a look of terror in their eyes as soon as they enter the slaughter house that would break your heart.
