This broke my heart. This is a story of mental illness in every capacity. This is why we need to be open about mental health. Talk about mental illness with your kids, friends and family. We can be a part of the solution. This hurt so much to watch, the work and passion behind the project is amazing and moving, but the story is so painful

I feel fortunate to be living in Canada where mental health is taken a bit more seriously, and there’s talk about moving mental health care into our universal heath care, which I’m in full support of. It’s one thing though for a government to be for something, it’s another for the population to be for something. Shawn in this story may have done some shady things, but if he had the proper skills to deal with his mental health he probably would’ve been able to help in a more constructive way. Shawn deserves our support through mental illness, not to be blamed for a murder he had no part in.

I don't see mental health as an issue for Shawn despite everyone saying so. I saw as much of him as all you folks and do not see any instability. At most, he made a couple reckless choices. Obviously, in hindsight, Shawn had every reason to be concerned. Which ultimately does not indicate so-called mental health issues. p.s. They reason I can't say an assumption of Shawn's insanity is completely unfounded is due to the one-eye patch photo. It's an effective image! hahaha

@heeho3360 4 жыл бұрын
Mariana .N.M yeah definitely, but even Rob said his info painted the picture of a mentally ill person from the movies (but im pretty sure that was a conscious attempt for the sake of the narrative). The issue of portraying differences in media is pretty serious and you can even sue the media and force an apology if you believe a certain condition is being misrepresented or portrayed in a negative light. Don’t get me wrong though, I don’t expect the “justice for Natalie” Facebook page with a bible quote on top to be the most tolerant bunch of individuals so most of the blame would be on them (but the predisposition to these negative portrayals plays a significant role in how people respond to these kind of situations as well).
@dannydethanos6994
@dannydethanos6994 4 жыл бұрын
Mariana .N.M I agree it’s not only on different forms of media to stop this but I do think there’s some people who won’t see beyond what they see on tv. The good guy never seems bad on face because it’s easier but when people look at this they see a good guy will act confident and the bad guy is mentally disturbed.

@heeho3360
@heeho3360 4 жыл бұрын
John McJohnson well I could go into the details of what mental illness means and how it impacts people but the basic goal is exactly the opposite of what you suggest; the desired outcome is to help the individual integrate back into the society and minimise the problems that their illness can cause and also the problems that discrimination and stigma can cause for them as well. There are many forms of treatment available now that can control the symptoms of a majority of cases, and in the cases where treatment isn’t working they’re kept at hospitals where they undergo rehabilitation. Integrating back into society in a healthy way can help with many of the symptoms of mental illness; it can even be just as effective as therapy. So obviously my personal suggestion is to help these individuals become a part of society again and reduce the burden of stigma and discrimination, and if feeling legitimately threatened notifying the authorities just like you would for any other person.

It sounds like Natalie was planning to blame it on Shawn as she prepared the event. "If I am found dead, it was him" makes that clear. Natalie was hoping to end two lives. What makes it worse is that Shawn seemed like the only one to even acknowledge Natalie's suicidal tendencies, let alone care about them. The real culprit is not the one that shot, but the ones that drove her to ask to be shot. Shawn already pointed to her family, and right now I trust him.

There are people who are depressed and suicidal but at the same time very manipulative. I understand that having a man who looks dodgy follow you around is scary however if she did post an add on Craigslist about finding a hit man I personally think she might've used Shawn as the fallback incase things go south-or north if she really wanted to die-, because who else would people blame other than the creepy mentally challenged stalker right? I'm sure if she did post that ad then she never wanted anyone else from her circle to know. It is easier entertain the idea that she was killed by the creepy stalker rather than the idea that the victim posted an ad on Craigslist about finding a hit man. Just my thoughts

This is odd, her twin sister alicia also went missing 2 years later in 2019, apparently was involved in pursuit and was found at a hotel in anothet state where she said she was "rescued from a bad situation". Edit/update - also found article from 2019 where father ted was arrested and placed in jail for possession and running from police, threatening to throw kids out of vehicle if police didn't back off. Maybe that was same event for dad and daughter. Seems whole family has substance use and legal issues and no doubt all parties have trauma from their loss.

I think it's ridiculous for you to jump to that conclusion. You have absolutely no proof of that other than a misguided opinion. She said that to her boyfriend in confidence likely because she was scared. Why was she scared, because she was being stalked. Have you ever been stocked? If you haven't you have no idea the terror that it brings. It ruins your life and destroy your sense of security completely so I think it's a logical conclusion to draw that she was actually in fear for her life from her stalker not that she was trying to frame him. She KNEW she was going to kill herself, so her saying that was just to set the stage for him to be accused. Not only that but he was 'stalking' her because she told him She was suicidal and then kept playing on his emotions so he was trying to 'save her from herself' but he was being odd and weird about it, due to him having a different neurological set up. She was also on dope so I'm sure the 'government' and everyone else was out to get her too in her mind. Sorry not sorry to be so blunt but girls that act like her are literally why girls who are really raped/stalked/ and abused etc have such a hard time being believed and getting their Justice. I'm glad that Rob decided to make a video about Natalie. My sister was actually pretty good friends with her and her twin sister (not mentioned in the video so I won't say her name) back in middle school. She and her sister would stay over our house semi-frequently so it was heartbreaking to hear about what happened to her. She and my sister didn't talk much since she moved away from our state. But I'm still saddened to think about how much her sister and father must miss her. Both her and her sister were extremely nice and kind to me and my family, so it really is a tragedy that a young woman like her decided to have her life taken from her like it was. Thanks for making the video Rob. Its nice to hear some more info on the case about her.

@chicken nuggies I mean yes he is clearly innocent of the murder, but mental illness does not excuse the harassment and stalking. I know multiple people with varying degrees of Aspergers, and none of them would go so far as to drive hours when someone didn't ask or to sleep behind someone's work. It reminds me of the Brooklyn 99 quote- "cool motive, still murder". In this case, it would be "valid motive, still stalking". I am mentally ill, and I agree you cannot always control your behaviors, however mentally ill people still need to be held accountable. We cannot act like he is some perfect misunderstood hero. No he is not a murderer but he is still a creep, and that is what I am emphasizing, given that most of this comment section is people acting like he was her true hero and best friend. And frankly, I can't personally blame the media for assuming his guilt at first. I mean, you have a girl go missing and it turns out she was posting about a man stalking and harassing her? Obviously he's gonna be the first person the cops talk to. I do think it was fucked up for people to keep blaming him once he was cleared, don't get me wrong, but I do think it is natural that people assumed he had something to do with it given that he was literally stalking her and she said he was scaring her

Shawn insisting on having Natalie's disappearance and death solved immediately tipped me off that he was not involved in her murder. A person involved in the crime wouldn't insist that. They'd more than likely want people to move on from the crime all together if they aren't flaunting it, which Shawn definitely WASN'T. Regardless of if he were a "stalker" or not, it would make no sense for a murderer to demand for his crime to be investigated

as someone pointed out in the replies under shawn's comment- it really does seem like she had some fantasy about being a murder victim, and needed a scapegoat to take the fall. i personally believe shawn was nothing more than an easy target here, with his mental illnesses and the sob stories she was always posting to paint him as a bad guy. •she actually reached out to shawn more than he did to her •she asked him to come to va and "save her and her friends," then cried and painted him as a stalker who followed her there. •she posted an ad on craigslist looking for someone to kill her, rather than just take her own life? •always posting about her "struggles" with him, but not her actual problems with substance abuse and suicidal thoughts that were far more prominent? sounds like she WANTED to be a murder victim to me; but that couldn't be done without victimizing shawn as well, if she didn't want anyone to find out that set it up herself.

Shawn was not a bad guy however in the mind of someone who has suicidal thoughts a person like him can push someone over the edge. Can you imagine a creepy guy following you, possibly rape and murder you? Even a normal person could become stressful and have paranoia. Maybe she wasn't a disgusting human being as you say maybe she had enough and blamed Shawn for pushing her over the edge, even though he only had good intentions. That could explain why she wanted to blame him after her death. Food for thought

@Hellbound Wolf420 just because someone is paranoid doesn't mean it's schizophrenia thinking you're being stalked by someone has nothing to do with schizophrenia it's when they get delusional and irrational that schizophrenia is obvious.. for example someone I know has a schizophrenic father who thinks the NFL is watching him and trying to "steal his ideas" which obviously sounds insane being stalked by someone especially if you're female is a logical fear
@lexkinetic5448
@lexkinetic5448 4 жыл бұрын
demonjmh Although some who have schizophrenia may have more “logical” delusions, I completely agree with you. This was a case where she had evidence and reason to have her beliefs. Her paranoia was justified, and this paranoia may have been worsened by her depression and negative mental state. His Aspergers may have presented in a way that was misunderstood and potentially further reinforced these beliefs
@infinitedeath1384
@infinitedeath1384 4 жыл бұрын
@Hellbound420 For someone to have schizophrenia, they need to be more than paranoid. Paranoia is just one of many symptoms of schizophrenia. Paranoia on it's own can make you have irrational reactions to situations, and make you believe things that are "irrational and insane." Calling someone who is paranoid schizophrenic is like calling someone who is having a down day bipolar. You should learn the difference between mental disorders and emotional problems that are brought by unforeseen circumstances in someone's life.

If you want to drum up drama about mental illness however you twist it to perceive it, pick someone else's comment. Mental illness alone does not alleviate someone of guilt. I absolutely agree. But what I am saying is that if Shawn is anything like my brother, he's a good man who can seem shady to the outside world because the world at large is incapable of understanding their way of thinking, but his intentions are good.

horrible take. just getting involved with someone means you're not allowed to distance yourself or complain about them down the road? the issue isnt her getting herself involved or whatever, it's whether or not she was telling the truth and what happened. like, if he really had been a stalker (tho he wasn't), she's allowed to "dramatize" him even if she'd gotten herself involved with him

lol shawn has proof that she would message him about wanting to die and he would try his best to help her and yet she would go and then turn around and try to make it seem like he was some stalker. Sounds exactly like multiple women I know who would do this often when they were younger. Its a way of getting a lot of attention. And thats clearly what she wanted. I hope wherever she is at now she has peace

Heather Mason To extend on that: people with aspergers (and autistic people in general) sometimes take things literally. My guess is that Natalie was having a suicidal episode and had threatened to kill herself multiple times (she probably said something along the lines of “im going to do it now”), and he took it at face value. What he did definitely wasn’t the best way to handle it, but when you look at it from his perspective, he was absolutely terrified that he might actually lose her.

I would like to know the interactions between Natalie and Shawn to understand whether his actions were creepy or caring; but either way, I don’t think the media should be allowed to harass innocent people like they do. The media doesn’t care what’s morally right as long as they have a story. And I don’t think it’s hard to believe she would put a hit out on herself. Heck, I’ve had the thought to do that at times.
@hoppinginpuddles
@hoppinginpuddles 4 жыл бұрын
Shawn's Aspergers would have played a huge part in how he interacted with Natalie. I am in no way any type of expert on the condition. But I do know that those who have Aspergers are often incapable of reading social cues and understanding personal boundaries. So I have no doubt that Shawn believed he was doing good, but as he is likely unable to determine these aspects of human emotion, it is very likely his actions would have been perceived as "creepy".
@evelynvslife
@evelynvslife 4 жыл бұрын
Kealeyb as someone with Aspergers that is why I’d like to know the interactions because then I could figure out whether it was a misunderstanding or just creepy. There’s a big difference between not understanding something is stepping over the line, and doing it regardless. As someone who’s had interactions with extremely creepy older guys who aren’t on the spectrum I have somewhat of an insight into caring vs predatory behaviour. And I feel like he was overstepping boundaries he should have known about.

I can tell you about my interactions with Shawn working with him. Never met Natalie. But Shawn is the type of guy to give you his last dollar so you could buy a sandwich. Drive you to your house when his car is on empty. He’s a decent human who unfortunately was homeless at the time. I think it’s important to note that Shawn was the only person SOBER in this case. Natalie and her family were addicts. Her bf too. Shawn was the only person she CHOSE to be around that was a decent human.

@@hoppinginpuddles It's not that people like us are incapable of reading social ques. It's just that it doesn't come naturally to us. Unlike people without aspergers, we need to be taught social ques, and when to take things literally or not. I am one such person who has learnt to read all the social ques. Knowing when someone isn't interested in a conversation, or reading someone's emotions, to the small things like hand gestures. How did i do this? By paying attention to how people interact with one another. I started to implement that into my behaviour. At first it really felt like i was acting, but eventually it started to feel natural, and now i don't even have to think about it. With enough effort, you can learn to deal with mental disorders. For some, it just requires a bit of observation, and for others it requires drugs. I have add as well, but i have never had medications for it. I still can't work, but i have worked through the anger issues i have. The last time i was ever violent was in primary school, and i'm 21 now.
