If you had told us rubbing oven cleaner on his entire body would help, we would have gladly done that. People need to understand that Gloria was a young mother. My mum passed away from cancer over a year ago, and what I learnt is that people have no empathy for people in that situation. My mum was a smart lady, but even she bought alternative medicines because she was DESPERATE for any sort of treatment that would actually work. I remember her looking at me with tears in her eyes saying "what have I got to lose? Might aswell try anything." So people calling terminally ill patients "stupid" for trying alternative medicine make me furious, because really it shows how awful our medical system can be and the lengths people will go to survive. Once I was looking through her old stuff and found a lot of news paper cut outs about local spiritual healers and alternative medicine. I could only imagine how devastated and desperate she felt, trying everything she could to find cure. The fact that she grew up in the Soviet Union where many ppl were scientifically sceptic kinda makes it even sadder for me. Brings me to tears everytime I think about it. upd: for more context, those spiritual healers were advertised as being able to cure that exact illness, and my mom wasn't ever a spirituality freak before and now. I’m a Respiratory Therapist and work in a ER. Blood samples get disposed of in a Biohazard container that gets taken out daily. So her blood being “lost” is really just good blood disposal protocol

​​​@@abrahamwashington8579 I am not an ER doctor/nurse but I have been into the er 20-30 times and I can corroborate that anything that gets your blood in it that is not sent to the lab does go into a biological waste container, usually a bin hung up on the side of the room (at least here in WI in the U.S.) Edit: for Penrod's questions I think that it is more than likely that as they were leaving or coming back in to clean up the vial was just lying around and not yet labelled, meaning it would go into the biological waste bin. I cannot attest to my unconscious blood draws, but when conscious they have you see the label with your name on it to get your confirmation that it was properly labelled and since she was conscious when she entered they my have been waiting for that. NOTE- My experiences have been in the last decade or so, medical practices may have changed drastically between her time and now but it is better to state the supporting evidence you have.

You said cancer and garlic smell and I IMMEDIATELY thought DMSO. My organic chemistry professor told us that he was working with it in a lab, and I believe he got just a bit on his glove and it's potent enough that within minutes he could taste garlic. He also told us it's been used as a cancer treatment, usually self medicated. Also, my mother read in a magazine just this year that it's some kind of miracle cure I had to tell her it's not, and I hadn't even heard this story yet. Edit: aaaand most of what I just said gets explained lmao. I'll add what I told my mom: even if it cures ANYTHING it must be taken with doctor supervision. If you self medicate, youre missing a lot of info about dosing, interactions, etc. It's just dangerous. And really sad looking at specific cases like this one. I really feel for Gloria. I know how complex biochemistry is, and if I were diagnosed with cancer, you know... I might just try something I likely shouldn't. It's desperation, not stupidity. It's something that people put out there as an option, and it sounds like she followed it up. I can't blame her. The rest seems like a freak accident, that we can hopefully learn from at least. And sidenote, it's been a year since I graduated college and being able to predict the outcome made me feel like I haven't forgotten anything. Comforting.

The DSMO in her blood can be explained by the fact that if you don’t empty your bladder or can’t empty your bladder, everything will start to go to your bloodstream as an escape route. Her organ failure caused her to be unable to urinate, which could have caused the DSMO to seep into her blood and her colon (explaining the fecal matter)

My father was treated with DMSO for a bone marrow transplant as part of his cancer treatment, and he had that weird fruity garlic smell for like a week. It was like a mix between overripe apples and crushed garlic that you could smell any time you walked in the same room as him. Just an overpoweringly sweet, fermented, rotten garlic smell that was incredibly distinct. And that was the modern, diluted formulation.

After THREE autopsies, no wonder the heart was missing and their was occult fecal matter. It's not often that we keep an entire organ in medical autopsies (They usually just take a sample for histology and then the rest of the organ goes back in the viscera bag. Most places put the bag back in the body when they send them to the funeral home/crematory), but it's not unheard of. And sometimes organs just have to be taken in whole and set in the formalin for a long time because of the state that they are in before they can even be prosected and sent for histological samples. And with her medical conditions, I can only imagine that her bowels were not looking good. Even when being as careful as possible, I've still sometimes perf'd a bowel while eviscerating someone who because of illness had really delicate tissue. Shit happens. And no matter how long you soak the bowel in water, and no matter how much water you run while doing so, you're gonna get shit in places it probably shouldn't go when running the bowel. And then once that gets plopped back into the viscera bag with all the other prosected organs, the fecal matter is just going to get mixed in. Except for microbiology samples, most things in a medical autopsy aren't stringently sterile like in surgery. They're dead. They can't get an infection and die.

When you are in pain, or you get news as bad as cancer, it's sometimes hard to even think straight, you will do whatever you can to live, even if it's something as dangerous as taking cleaning chemicals. Reminds me of when coronavirus was just becoming an issue and the media was fear mongering and those people ingested fish tank cleaner to protect themselves from it and the wife was hospitalized and the husband died. As for the vial of blood going missing: you’d be shocked how much stuff just gets thrown out by accident at the hospital. I was recently in the hospital for and extended stay of cancer treatments, and one day a nurse came and took 11 vials of blood from me. She came back 15 minutes later apologizing profusely because she accidentally put them in the “disposal area”, and they got thrown out, and had to take 11 more.

I was in the hospital for dengue fever in 2022, and had to have blood samples taken everyday to monitor my platelet count. I think we put in a request for a separate test to confirm my blood type, but for some reason, this required them to extract 1-2 *more vials* of blood (dunno why they couldn't just analyze the sample they took for the platelets but whatever). I never got the results from those since the staff apparently forgot to process it and those samples were never heard from again.

Ex ER Nurse here: Nobody eats dinner when working a busy shift. Even less when there's a cardiac arrest patient coming to the door. PLUS, the DMSO4 didn't even need to be vaporized. If it was in a trace concentration, the intubation into the lungs with high amounts of positive-pressure oxygen could have aerolized the DMSO4 and dispersed it into the room.

I was thinking about that this whole time! I’d heard the case study before without the proposed answer and I figured it had to do with some nerve agent. I did EMS before nursing and they did a pretty dang good job on teaching us about how if multiple people are impacted by the same unknown cause (especially with new onset after arriving on the scene), the first thing to suspect is related to the environment! I can only imagine how scary it would have been to be working that code and watching your colleagues fall out on top of trying to save a young woman’s life. Codes are hard enough with all the chaos - things such as a missing syringe or body parts missing after two autopsies seem logical, as traumatizing as it may be to the family.

As a cancer survivor myself, I in no doubt why Gloria would try the oven cleaner as a remedy. She isn’t stupid, being diagnosed with cancer is one of the scariest things on the planet, on top of being terminal or treatment not being an option, being so desperate to try anything to cure it or at least deal with the symptoms. Her course of actions is 100% valid and makes sense as someone whose gone through cancer also. This is a crazy interesting story. I’m 60 now and when I was in my early 20s my mom was told about DMSO from a coworker on how it was so great as a paint reliever. My mom bought a bottle at a local store in liquid form to rub on her knees for arthritis pain relief. It defiantly worked and right after she put it on her skin she could taste it in her mouth. We later learned that DMSO is a great solvent and it’s important to have clean skin before using it because any dirt or contaminants on the skin is instantly dissolved and carried into the bloodstream.

it's kinda tragic that I didn't even realize this is the first time I've heard her talked about as a person and not a body. I've watched many videos on this case over the last 5 or so years and I guess I never noticed that aside from her cancer diagnosis, and that background, Gloria was a body that was doing all of this to other people, instead of the woman she was, going through one of the most terrifying deaths imaginable. the shift to recognizing her as the victim in this is nice. As a cancer survivor myself, you will become DESPERATE for ANYTHING to ease your suffering. The nurses tending to me on the Oncology floor didn't properly rehydrate me after my first round of chemo. When they sent me home I was constantly dehydrated and was unable to keep anything down- not even water. My stomach would not hold anything and it got to the point where I was begging, pleading even to my parents to get me anything with CBD just so I could be able to drink water and not puke it back up. I can totally see and understand a mother willing do try anything if she wasn't able to afford the medical care, even if its something unproven and outlandish like an oven degreaser. Also the perfect storm for all of that to just come together to cause that is absolutely astronomical. You would honestly think the hospital staff would stop and try to clean the stuff off her chest before putting the paddles on her but I guess every second counts when it comes to cardiac arrest.

Mystery solved. I first heard this story on the BuzzFeed unsolved series and always thought she must have been taking some kind of holistic or alternative medicine for the cancer. The DMSO explains everything. Especially since they observed her chest was glossy - if she was having heart problems, chest pain and/or trouble breathing she probably put the degreaser all over her chest, where it would make direct contact with the defibrillator. I'm surprised they didn't think to wipe her down before using the defib but then again, there's no time for that if she's coding.

I wanted to comment on the family denying she took DSMO as a treatment. it's very likely that if Gloria was feeling desperate enough to try drain cleaner as a treatment method, she felt embarrassed and didn't want her family to know. their adamant denial now could be them either not believing she would do that, or refusing to accept that she'd do it and not tell them. I can only begin to imagine what that situation would've have been like for Gloria, and what its like for the family now, but I can see this happening. I also have to wonder how sure they are that she didn't. "she didn't use that, we've never even owned that stuff" is much different to "she didn't use that, she's not like that".

This is exactly what I thought. Maybe she hid the fact she tried it because she was embarrassed. From the family’s perspective, I understand why they deny it and blame the hospital. Saying someone used “oven cleaner” to try and help themselves sounds ridiculous and the way she died was surrounded in such bizarre circumstances that it’s hard to believe mistakes weren’t made. They were angry, and grieving, and needed someone or something to blame and refused to blame Gloria. In the end it was a tragic and freakish set of one in a million circumstances. It is that same desperation that can also make people forget empathy. I'm sure the blame came from the people that were around her that day, and they surely grew bitter because, remember, some people had permanent damage in their organs and while in not Gloria's fault at all that this happened, its way easier for embittered people to forget that and blame her. I just hope that this video gains more traction- because before this video, I remember there was one myth-buster video that solely blamed the hospital and did agree that it was simply mass hysteria.

It’s no wonder she was in so much pain, late stage cancer pain can’t be controlled with codeine. It’s an old, very mild narcotic that was outmoded for severe pain even in the 90s.

I've heard this story before and thought it was interesting but strange, but hearing it now with my dad dying of cancer and only having a few months left it really hits me hard. There's a desperation that hits people when theyre confronted with the fact that there's nothing more to be done, my family has had years to deal with it but it's still the hardest thing I've ever had to think about, I can't imagine what it must be like to one day suddenly be told that you're dying and it's too late and there's nothing you can do. I can see her trying a last ditch effort to treat herself, when all the doctors refuse or are unable to help you you really have no other option but to try alternative treatments whether you really believe them or not.

I agree. I think that it's insensitive to say she was stupid to take something unproven when most people will try anything to cure their cancer. This was in the 1980's, too. Cervical cancer was much less understood then. I think it's fair to assume that we'd all be throwing hail marys.

On top of that many people used it as muscle pain treatment too (Wendi particularly talking about gym people using the same type of oven cleaner stuff she used) So you'd think if all these doctors on tv are telling you dsmo might help cancer, AND all these healthy gym bros were using it after a particularly rough workout and were totally healthy, it doesn't sound as bad of a idea (especially if maybe one of those gym people were a friend she possibly trusted suggested it to her and vouched for it as a good treatment)

This is the first video I’ve seen from your channel, and based your thorough take on her case in addition to the comments, I’m definitely going to check out more. Your final thoughts remind me a lot of my dad who passed away from thyroid cancer. He battled it for a long time, so perhaps the level of desperation that Gloria experienced wasn’t present, but as other commenters stated, were we in her situation, we might have slathered him in oven cleaner, too. agree, other videos I saw on the topic had little to no respect for her. I feel so bad for her cause my grandpa was in a similar position but less dire. He is a diabetic and due to this, his toes were having trouble getting oxygenated killing the toes and damaging the feet. He had two options from doctors, amputate the foot or amputate the toes and deal with everything else. I will never understand why anyone can't understand that type of desperation in someone especially one who lived nearly his whole life as the one others depend on and for being fit and always out going.

My mother was a nurse there . And we lived a few blocks away . The story is 100 percent true.. she didn't go to the hardware store for cancer treatment. She was going to Mexico to get cancer treatments and who knows what they put in her body. That is what the family is failing to tell people that is where the DMSO came from

Seconding that this is also likely and is still very common. The amount of friends/family I have who go to Mexico for cheaper medicine, surgery, other treatments is pretty high. It becomes a dangerous gamble when you start to seek out treatment for more dire conditions.

This is a very good point and one I saw often working in a retail pharmacy. Even in the states, a lot of my Brazilian patients (there's a pretty substantial Brazilian population in my area) went to Brazilian doctors who would prescribe medications that were common treatment options for their conditions back in Brazil, but weren't common in the states. I saw this a lot during the pandemic (not ivermectin lol)

Gloria was really the victim of bad luck, even when she was trying to get help, the help ends up killing her, multiple others, and hurting more. And none of it was her fault directly, just a series of dominoes that caused such a tragedy. That's terrible and terrifying...

Ive heard of this channel before but only recently came across any Wendigoon videos. I like that he manages to explain all the facts and theories of a case while still maintaining compassion for all the people involved. This was a dying mom that for one reason or another wasn’t undergoing chemo, it makes sense that she’d seek out some alternative solution to at least keep her going longer so she could keep on taking care of her family & try to live a decent life. I’m glad that Wendigoon avoids making fun of her while still making it known that there were people being so disrespectful

I think I heard the version where her name isn't even mentioned and the story goes that she just walked in, died, and was never identified. And she wasn't just covered with lotion, she was yellow, as in her skin was unnaturally bright yellow. And the medical staff was fainting and puking all around her just from the smell of garlic, and the blood was clumping and coagulating in the syringe. Like, all the details are there, just exaggerated to an absurd degree, but most importantly, completely dehumanising her. I think that version was leaning heavily towards the devil possession angle. Basically all it's missing is literal fire and brimstone.

This is your first video I've watched and... Thank you for handling what that poor woman went through (i can't imagine the agony she went through in her last moments) with dignity and care. I'm a mom of two in my thirties, and while I wouldn't turn to alternative medicine, I wouldn't see myself above desperate attempts to prolong what time I'd have left with my beloved. It's saddening to see that people mock her - they don't know what she was going through. Neither do I, but I can relate a little bit... It inspired a story in the "Memories" set called "Stink Bomb" with a scientist who has a cold tries some experimental medication and then falls asleep, only to wake up later to find everyone in his lab dead and us later finding that the medicine reacted to the shot in his body and now he's letting out a highly toxic gas that even Hazmat suits can't contain along with throwing off the trajectory of missiles and such aimed at him while he tries to go to a lab the military ask him to go to and, of course, try to see what they can learn and how to use it.

Dad was a Veterinarian back in the day. He used to use DMSO for sore muscles. When I was 14 years old I injured my back. So, Mom decided that it would be a good idea to put some DMSO on it. Well, she somehow managed to get ahold of the bottle that hadn't been diluted. Needless to say, the skin on my back turned to deep blisters until it fell off. Burning didn't stop until four days later. It was pretty much a nightmare.

Most people ignore the label advice to try a tiny spot first and watch for reactions, that's present on many products such as hair dye. Some people have a strong allergic reaction to DMSO.

The thing with family accounts that's always hard for me is, as much as I want to listen to them, families oftentimes want to protect the memory of their loved ones and are quick to shoot down anything that they feel 'tarnishes' their memory. In this case, I think it's very likely Gloria didn't even tell them she was using anything. Perhaps worried they'd judge her, or not wanting to get their hopes up about something she knew was uncertain. Or they did know, but there's comfort it being able to assign blame, and if she did use DMSO- then it's an unfortunate series of events that no one could've anticipated.

@williamjenkins4913 there's a lot of cases where someone very clearly died due to drug use or alcohol, but the family refused to accept it because their loved one "never would've done that" or the many instances of someone committing suicide, but the family refusing to accept it. It's always horrifically sad, because it's such a human thing to want to see only the best of those you love. At the same time, though, i do think accepting the truth is honoring them in its own way.

I'm reminded of the Ouchi video you made a month after this one. People who think she was stupid for putting oven cleaner on her body -- you'd be surprised at the length people can go for people they love. If it was just them alone, they may decide to not bother and allow themselves to die with some shred of dignity. Gloria did this for her family. Ouchi endured 83 days of radioactive hell for his family.

I believe the reason the women would on average have a stronger reaction isn't just due to coming in direct contact with Gloria but also is due to the fact that they would weigh less than their male counterparts, this is why (if i understood correctly) the women who didn't come into contact with gloria also had worse symptoms than the men. Weight usually plays a role in how strong a dose someone has to receive of a substance before it starts to take effect and how much they can take before it's an overdose, this is why you are asked your weight when you need medical treatment. As well when you haven't eaten in a while your body is able to metabolize substances quicker as eating would cause the nutrients from the food to dilute the toxin and would also "distract" your body from metabolizing the substance in the first place, this is the same reason you get drunk faster on an empty stomach, and is the reason why those who hadn't eaten had stronger side effects as well.

A nurse also is typically going to be in better shape and weigh less from working in their feet, especially back in the 80s when the average female was closer to the 140-150lbs.

The reason why people might call you foolish or just plain dumb for using “alternative medicine” is that at best it does nothing and the placebo effect kicks in. At worst it makes whatever ails you worse because some weirdo from Arizona told you rubbing a crystal on your skin rash would make it clear right up and now the rash has spread.
