Those batteries were used in roadside beacons when there are roadworks etc in the 90s. They were usually yellow plastic with an orange flashing light in the UK.

Swap the styluses around and play it with the reiteration mode - it can 'fake' polyphony by flipping between the two notes! They're worth modding for 12V or 15V DC input - the 18V from the two batteries is a bit close to the limit of the little amp chip and they tend to blow up
@wallpurgesnight820912 күн бұрын
How exactly is that done? Do you mean just running a DC PSU to the power input on the machine or are there components required?
@jamesbennettmusic12 күн бұрын
@wallpurgesnight8209 yep just a DC input! I just grabbed a 15v regulated supply, drilled a hole on the back and and fitted a DC jack
@wallpurgesnight82099 күн бұрын
@@jamesbennettmusicthanks for the info. Is the regulated aspect something that is required for the stylophone or is it just something you had laying around? I have one of those wallwart PSUs that can change from 1.5 up to 12 v could I use something like that? Or again is the regulated aspect something that is required as to not fry the unit?
@jamesbennettmusic9 күн бұрын
@wallpurgesnight8209 yeah the tuning will be unstable without the regulation. The 12v might just about power it, 15v is better

Those 9v batteries most likely are just 6 1.5v elements together, like aaa or aa ones. I remember there used to be 4.5v batteries with 2 long contacts, they often had like 3 aaa batteries inside.

I want one. I like the way it sounds! It's full of potential. I would just extend the length of the wire on each stylus. I'd have so much fun with this. Loving those riffs!

The overall pointlesness is sort of the point of stylophones. They almost never get used to make music, but when they are, they hold the song together
@dillipphunbar79246 ай бұрын
Gnarly finish...that sounds (apart from the short wires on the stylus which I always found annoying too) , like an interesting instrument for experimentation. I haven't heard of that model before.

I remember seeing this many many moons ago in the early 80s and was also a bit peed off that the double styluses didn't mean the ability to play 2 notes. Still, it's got some great tones to sample.. so defo worth having.
@synaesmedia6 ай бұрын
You keep saying it's not very good and then making it do awesome! 😀 Whenever you do get something you don't think is very good, you should always just put it through one of your pedals. Like the telephone stutterer or the sequenced delay. Something great will come out of that. But listening to you putting this in "feedback" mode (ie. connecting output back into input) at the end, I was wondering how it would sound if you bent it to add a feedback connection via something like a PT2399 . My bet would be pretty mind-blowing.

Several available on eBay cheapest is £75 or best offer. Most expensive £395 or best offer. I’m very tempted, would sound great on the reiteration stylus with some delay and some shimmer reverb.

Does a stylophone or theremin exist that has built in scale quantization with selectable scales? That could be fun to play with, but I'll be damned if I gotta try and bang out harmonic Minor with a pen like that or ear winging it on a theremin.

So, evidently, a normal 9-volt battery is a PP-3. There's also a 5 and 7 in addition to the 11.
@EscapeMCP6 ай бұрын
The PP3 can contain 6 AAAA batteries (the used to make them this way, now they usually make them as a single unit with the cells as one unit, but stacked vertically), I assume the PP5 is 6 x AAAs, 7 is AAs and 11 looks almost like C or D cells in there
@EscapeMCP6 ай бұрын
If you measure the battery, it'll be 2 units deep and 3 units wide. You can make up a replacement by soldering 6 batteries together and only exposing the 2 end terminals. 6 x 1.5V = 9V
@MammaApa6 ай бұрын
I've seen and used batteries that were the same width as those, but they were half as thick. So I guess 4,5V? But not since I was a kid. Which is a whiiile ago, I am 46. Some toys used them, can't remember what.
