After a 2009 NFL week 12 game where the Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the Baltimore Ravens, in a game that Ben Roethlisberger missed due to a concussion, wide receiver Hines Ward decided that it would be a good idea to call out Big Ben for not playing in the game, and for being soft. Let's just say that Ward received some backlash for his ill-advised comments. This is the story behind the drama of the 2009 Steelers between Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward

You have that totally backwards. Ben was criticized as being a poor teammate and making poor decisions (like the helmet less motorcycle accident after Super Bowl 40). During the mid- to late 1980s (before "Jacked Up" was a thing), NFL Films produced shows such as NFL Crunch Course (one of my all-time faves), Crunchtime, In the Crunch, and Search and Destroy. All of them featured so many hard hits (some of which would be personal fouls in today's NFL) that were, as HOF linebacker Sam Huff said, "part of the game. And that's what people pay good money to see, the great hits."

There were times when Roethisberger would act like he was hurt when he wasn't. He'd be limping like crazy and then when the defense didn't put a spy on him, he'd take off running. Funny how his limp magically disappeared. If Pitt. won with injured Ben, their fans would crow about how tough he was. If Pitt. lost, it was a built-in excuse for why and then their fans would be like, "Look how courageous he was trying to help the team, despite being hurt." You never knew for sure if he was really hurt or if he was trying to fake out the defense. Homer fans spun the results to put him and the team in the best light.

I maintain that if Troy doesn't go down in the opener (after a positively all-world first half), the Steelers represent the AFC in the Super Bowl, defending their crown. If memory serves, the team lost its seven defeats by a total of, like, 20 points altogether. (In the previous, SB-winning season, the Steelers nearly lost by that many points to Tennessee alone.) The team of course made the Super Bowl again the following year but were beat up with injuries after the playoff run (Pouncey out, Harrison and Polamalu playing hurt).

Its funny because when Ben was winning the Steelers superbowls every 2-3 years (05-08) he and Ward were thick as theives. Every piece of highlight footage is of those two hugging and celebrating like excited schoolgirls on the sidelines... then the guy gets hurt and Ward takes a low-shot at him, not cool. Unlike Ward, Ben retired a Steeler because he WANTED to, Ward just couldn't get anyone to make an offer so he hung up the cleats. I think that was kind of lame. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Ward, he is Pittsburgh royalty around these parts, but I was really upset with him for this. Ben was still YOUNG and in his prime at this point. No reason to risk putting him in a terrible place with another 10 years left in his tank. I think Ward was seeing that his time was short and wanted another SB run before he retired. So it was kind of selfish. Even though Ben would deliver ANOTHER SuperBowl appearance for the Steelers after the 2010 season. His 3rd in a total of 5 seasons.

I’ll flat out say this. I have a lot of respect for Hines Ward. The guy alongside Steve Smith were two of the toughest wide receivers I’ve seen play the game. I have a lot of respect for Big Ben as a football player, but I don’t respect him one bit as a person. However, I completely disagree with Hines here. It would be one thing if Big Ben had a nagging injury, but this is a concussion we’re talking about here. You don’t mess with concussions and perhaps knowing what we know now with CTE, it’s possible Hines may have done a complete 180 if he knew just how badly CTE messes up your brain. You just don’t take any chances with concussions. Ever. I think all he would need to do is take a look at how his former teammate Antonio Brown turned out…but then again, AB had issues even before the concussions/Burfict hit. All-in-all, this was a really stupid take by Hines. I get it, he let his emotions get the better him and the Steelers coaching staff/medical personnel handled this about as poorly as they could possibly could have. However, as my mom used to say, if you’re afraid people will think you’re an idiot, you can either keep your mouth shut and let them to come to their own conclusions or open your mouth and prove them right. Hines chose the latter and we see what it got him.

The, "suspension," was a bad joke, he should have been suspended for the entire season, and, cut, immediately following, but, the NFLPA, would never allow that, and, The, Rooney Family, didn't want him going to a rival, throughout that SB, the thought of him doing talk shows, over the Summer, while, promoting, "The, Redemption Tour," made me physically ill, luckily, the Packers prevented such a disaster, Deshaun Watson will take cues, claiming to be a victim, while, behaving, completely, otherwise.

Funny that "psycho" receivers Ward and Brown would stay the longest. Dude we get it. You’re a Pats nut hugger and you don’t like the Steelers. Commenting on everybody’s post like this is your vid or something. Weird. It’s fine, but don’t act like the Steelers weren’t good. Cuz you’re wrong. They’re number 2 behind New England in win percentage since 2000. I’m not arguing about them being better than the Pats over that stretch and not even gonna get into Spygate talks. Brady is the best QB of all time so yeah Ben doesn’t compare to that. But 2 rings, 18 years in the league, top 5 in numerous categories, and hall of fame career is more than adequate lol. Who cares if bad teams beat the Pats if they were still bad. Pats had Steelers number with Brady, doesn’t negate their accomplishments. Pats coulda shoulda woulda in 2005, 2008, 2010 but didn’t. I see you’re also arguing 09, damn why not give them an excuse for every year😂. But you’re illogical so enjoy rewriting history

Also, funny in hindsight that Roethlisberger talked about how hurt he was from being called out in the media, and then, almost a decade later, he called out James Washington, who was a rookie at the time, on his radio show to blame him for not catching a pass that HE overthrew, in a game where HE threw two picks that literally caused the Steelers to lose. Guess he learned nothing from this.
