During week 14 of the 2005 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers played the Detroit Lions on ESPN's Sunday Night Football. However, when one local ABC affiliate in Detroit decided to purchase the game, allowing local Detroit people to watch the game without a cable subscription, it forced an absolutely chaotic mess between the NFL, ABC, figure skating, and one of the most popular shows at the time, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

I checked Extreme Makeover: Home Edition's Wikipedia page and according to it, on December 11, 2005, they aired a special Holiday Edition of the show showing past families giving back.

The closest I ever came to watching Extreme Makeover was the episode of IASIP where they kidnap the Juarez family, give them an insane amount of credit card debt and then burn their house down...and I bet that is better than the rerun that aired instead of figure skating.

As a Michigan resident I can pretty much guarantee that WXYZ did the right thing, Detroit people love their Lions and they will watch a 4-8 lions team play over Extreme makeover 10 times out of 10

Back in the 80s CBS had the NBA playoffs. On a Friday night they had a choice between a live game or the Friday night line up which consisted of reruns. One of the shows was Dallas. CBS let the affiliates decide whether to air the game live. Just about all the affiliates decided to air the reruns and the game aired at 1130 pm on tape delay. Reruns over a live game. The NBA was at a low back then.

Ah back in the heyday when home makeover shows such as Extreme Makover, Trading Spaces, and many HGTV shows were popular. The Lions could've gotten a makeover during the dark days of the Millen Era.

I used to watch Extreme Makeover Home Edition - I remember in the early seasons they used to actually renovate and upgrade the home of the family each week... but then occasionally it was the best move to tear the house down and put up a whole new one (due to too much damage, condemned, etc).

The Novak family was from Boardman, Ohio (WYTV territory) and the episode was preceded by a local special previewing the episode (which meant that America’s Funniest Home Videos wasn’t seen in the Mahoning Valley). During the week of filming, the news team did their newscasts from outside the Novak extreme home makeover site.
