Wow! I’ve seen your older videos on ketchup and Maria Orosa, and this new one is absolutely amazing. You are such a great historian and storyteller!

📰 The recent FDA import alert has impacted Filipino condiments like banana ketchup and fish sauce, leading to shortages in U.S. Filipino communities. Manufacturers are working on reformulating these products to meet FDA standards, and shipments are currently under FDA review. We can expect availability in U.S. stores soon, pending FDA approval. Be sure to check your local retailers and stay updated with the latest FDA information!

Kirby, as an Aussie married to a Higaonon grandmother and living in Cagayan de Oro City Mindanao, I appreciate both banana katsup (my wife's favourite), and oyster sauce, along with my traditional Anglo-Irish favorite, Worcestershire sauce. I knew the story of banana katsup, but didn't know the Kapampangan word derived from Hokkien Chinese. Oyster sauce has actually become my favorite. I use it in cooking all the time. As an addendum, stinky fermented fish sauce in Europe actually dates back a few thousand years, as the favorite condiment in Ancient Rome was "garum", which was a fish sauce made by fermenting fish for a few months. Stinky fish sauce has very old roots.

"regulatory concerns". Pffftt. There is an American company that is losing because of those banned items
@shade959213 күн бұрын
American companies and their propaganda mouthpieces may claim that they're against protectionism, but they're silent when things like this happen. In reality they just want to be able to interfere with the economies of other countries and not have to worry about other countries, especially poor countries, being able to put a dent on their profits.

Funny how those products are banned in the US but not in Europe although there's a different formula made for European continent

Well the ancient Mediterranean cultures had a fish sauce called Garum. Romans had an industrial production of it as seen in the ruins of Pompeii. The western world rediscovering these flavors from South East Asia.

I think that Mang Tomas types of sauce should be called liver sauce and not lechon sauce. It can really limit it's potential uses if we keep calling it lechon sauce.

Wait, WHAT‽ The ban is outrageous! (Thanks for the notice, though I'm surprised I missed this video.) _"Késiap" pala ang patís,_ and our Indonesian cousins have similar-sounding sauces. Perhaps, it's time to start experimenting with their dishes, too! 🤤

It's just the Asian version of garum. Interestingly, the 鮭 (kê) character in kê-chiap, which originally meant any fermented or preserved fish, became the character for salmon after Europeans arrived with their smoked salmon.

@bellaliggayu12 күн бұрын
How can you possibly make a fragrant sauce made from fish products? This is next to impossible. What is important is that they are made very clean and safe for human consumption. If the American do not relish them, then they must understand that it is for Filipino consumption. They should not buy them if they find no use of these sauces. Mind you they contribute to the economy of the country.

Mga Kapampangan lang gumagamit ng Kesiap. Mas lalo lang lumalakas ang theory na mga immigrants sila from Indonesia. Hmmp.
@gacrux-ni7hw13 күн бұрын
Yung mga negrito na considered as first settlers sa Philippines are considered immigrants from Borneo(Indonesia/Brunei/Malaysia) and Sumatra(Indonesia). May problema ba sa pagiging immigrants kung ancestry mo are most likely immigrants din? Yung ancestry mo Hindi connected sa Negritos? Unless absolutely sure ka na ang ancestry mo is purely from native settlers way before nagsettle ang mga Negritos sa Pinas then your ancestry is most likely from immigrants of another country.
@marktabiolo53413 күн бұрын
@gacrux-ni7hw im talking about not so long ago migration. They had no artifacts in Pampanga are been discovered. But their language is much more related to Javanese. Another thing in my observation, Kapampangan advocates nowadays are claiming Aeta culture, terminologies, myths etc are become part of Kapampangan diaspora..
