We always do an ironman or a shark tank for promotions. You toll with everyone from lowest whitebelt to highest belt. Great team building and you actually get to do Jiu-Jitsu.
@pierrefoulquie62729 ай бұрын
I got my first stripe on my white belt a few weeks back, and God was I disappointed. All the white belt were summoned, the ones who got a stripe were called out, stood up, got their stripe and sat back. At the end, we were called to form the corridor to whip the 3 new blue belts. The teacher mentioned that the ones who didn't want to participate weren't obliged, but I was the only one to step aside. Many of us weren't even aware of this "tradition" and just gave a soft strike, while the more ranked practitioners were yelling at them to strike harder. The day after, one of the guys of had been promoted to a higher belt could not show up to train because his back pain kept him awake all night long. I just felt that one of the training session I did pay for was stolen from me, and that guy had two , I don't think this made any of us any better (and I've been told there are four of them each year...). On the other hand, in my capoeira club, each promotion ceremony I have been involved in has been an exiting moment : player are invited from all over the place, newcomers get to play with masters, promoted guys get to play a roda with all the guys that already holds the same belt (and sometimes, it gets harder then getting whipped on the back with a piece of cloth). I mean, it is the "most capoeira day of the year", whereas my first BJJ promotion ceremony was my "least BJJ day" so far.

My gym does hard rolling (mostly positional) for up to purple and structured tests for brown and black instead of the gauntlet. I don't feel cheated by that, and I agree with your basic point. Getting a whipping for a belt is silly. If your belt is legit you'll pay for it in blood on the mat.

Oh man, Ramsey in some martial arts hot water yet again. You know you're in for a grounded, but entertaining video when that happens. I'll never understand as to why people act so strongly about these topics. It's pretty dumb and ridiculous, and perhaps undignified. Seems like a lot of ego goes into the comments supporting it. We never had promotions or celebrations with the gauntlet when I was training daily though, it was a respectful and thoughtful atmosphere. Thanks for keeping it real, Ramsey.

Many interesting points, I don't know if I'll tackle everything, but okay. I'm a 38-year-old Brazilian guy, I was a kid in the 90's and we did this in school. School kids were kinda violent those days where I grew up (30 km from Rio de Janeiro in São Gonçalo). This was called "corredor polonês" (Polish Corridor) practiced wherever there were enough boys together (schools, streets, funk parties). Now, I recently came back to BJJ and I found a cool place where the teacher is also a yogi, but aside from the zen part, there were gauntlets for promotions and for your birthday, I couldn't see the fun in it, everybody teasing each other about it as if it was a great test of phisicality. I always thought a real "gauntlet" would be rolling with the graduates in a non-stop fashion, that would be really a cool rite of passage, I hope I have my own dojo one day and I can do it as I like. Traditions are supposed to be questioned as everything else in life, that is the way we can check out things that are not good anymore.

From the title I thought you were talking about the holding back everyone from going through ranks and just add a billion stripes on belts. From what I recall, a Black belt in BJJ is close to 10 years, where as most martial arts, 10 years is close to being instructor/master.
@RamseyDewey9 ай бұрын
A black belt in BJJ comes whenever you happen to get it. I spent 6 years wearing a BJJ white belt. 12 years wearing a blue belt. 2 years wearing a purple belt, and one year so far wearing a brown belt. Consistent training, multiple times a day, 6 days a week no breaks.

I have a question I would be keen to hear your thoughts on, if the topic is of interest to you. For context I have only limited experience of what might be considered modern combat sport (my background is mostly 'traditional'). Since watching your content I have spent a some time looking up videos of high profile fights over the years, with a particular interest in how the sport has evolved. Probably somewhat predictably, much if what I have been looking at are the Gracies, and how their Ju-jitsu has influenced martial arts. Seeing some of the early fights and how people tried to deal with them vs more recent fights and the adaptions which other competitors have had to make is something which I have found fascinating. While going through these I have happened upon an individual who, while new to me, seems to be a pretty well regarded individual in combat sport; Kazushi Sakuraba. His nickname of 'The Gracie hunter' certainly makes for a colourful character, but what really caught my attention was a single sentence in his Wikipedia profile, describing his fighting style as "unorthodox". To reiterate I am a relatively new spectator of combat sport, so it is very possible I am missing something. In all the videos I watched I could see he is clearly very good but I couldn't work out what was meant by "unorthodox". MMA in particular seems to be pretty diverse in terms of the strategies, techniques, and styles participants use. I'm not even sure how you would go about defining what an orthodox style actually is. The sport also seems pretty fluid, with strategies and styles changing and evolving as new competitors bring different things to the table. I suppose my question is in two parts: 1. As an expert in MMA, do you think it is possible to define an orthodox style of fighting in the context of the sport (either now or at any point in its history)? Or are such lables of little meaning? 2. Regarding Kazushi Sakuraba specifically; was there anything particularly stand out or different about his personal style which distinguishs him from other fighters? If you were only able to see silhouettes could someone theoretically tell that one of them was Kazushi Sakuraba, based on how the competitors are fighting or moving? Thanks very much.

I did the gauntlet for blue and purple belt and it was fun. However that stopped because we had blue belt who wasn’t comfortable so my brown belt came without a gauntlet. Now that I own a gym I agree the gauntlet isn’t something that we should do. Too many liabilities plus there is a clique-ish nature to it. We had a guy that didn’t want to do it kind of get bullied into it by his classmates. And the military has gotten rid of a ton of traditions that are hazing because they don’t add to the good order and discipline. That guy who complained was probably full of nonsense.

Hey coach! I'd like your opinion on a hypothetical solution to weight-cutting and weigh-ins for professional fights. The problem; fighters want to weigh in as light as possible and are willing to cut drastic amounts only because they know they have 24 hours to re-feed before the fight. Other attempts at curtailing cutting (ie hydration testing) have only led to fighters finding other ways to cheat those tests. My solution: 2 weigh-ins. The first is 24 hours before the fight and the second is ringside right before they step into the octagon. The fighter must make weight both times or be disqualified. I don't think any fighter would be willing or able to maintain a depleted state for 24 hours prior to a fight. Hopefully this would lead to fighters only trimming to the lowest weight they are still comfortable performing. Each class will probably have to add several pounds to compensate. Initially I just wanted the single weigh-in ringside, but I know there would be some people who still try to go into a fight severely impaired. The first weigh in all gives the promotion time to swap in an alternate if someone fails to make weight (the alternate must also make both weigh-ins). What do you think? Am I missing something obvious?
