How do I get more confident in using unorthodox grappling moves in mma? Context, I am a d2 heavyweight wrestler and judo brown belt who has a bad knee so I rely on moves like mat returns, hip tosses, and even my double legs come from tieups in wrestling and in the 2 mma bouts I did, I won fine with tieups and dirty boxing, but I can't shoot from space if my life depended on it and I feel inferior to my competition because of it.

Hi Ramsey, would you agree that the main difference between martial arts is the rules? Under the same set of rules two different martial arts can look the same (judo and wrestling) and under a different set of rules the same martial art looks different (point fighting karate, kyokushin karate). Simply put, the rules define the game.

This was a great Q&A session Brother Dewey! I especially liked the very last question about teaching someone ‘wrong’ (or maybe better put, teaching someone poorly). I’ve been involved in martial arts most of my life, but I really only consider myself an average fighter at best. But I was an English teacher here in Japan for 17 years. My job description was ‘assistant teacher’ and I travelled between 13 schools and helped the teacher on sight with their classes. This meant I got to teach the same material over and over again with different teachers and see what worked and what didn’t. It also meant I got to recognize problems students were having with the material early because I’d seen them over and over again. I got to be an excellent teacher (even if I say so myself). So it really resonated when you said teachers can tend to default to the way they were taught even if it was stupid or wrong. You really have to look at each problem to see what isn’t getting across and how to fix it. One of my favorite methods when introducing new material was compare and contrast. Review something they know backwards and forwards and then point out how the new material was similar and where it differed. That really seemed to help.

I did have a friend who studied very classical martial arts in Japan. As a very fluent foreigner, he was often asked to translate once he’d gotten familiar with the material. He had an interesting story about translating one time and the teacher saying “Now a key here is keeping the guard high. People often have a tendency to let it drop and leave their throat exposed. (Turns to translator) ---san, you had that problem when you were coming up.” My friend said “I don’t seem to recall anyone correcting me at the time.” And the teacher told him “No. We just kept punching you in the throat until you stopped doing it. It seemed easier at the time.” Sometimes the lessons we learn on our own stick with us longer than the ones people give us outright.

Joachim Meyer has a longsword technique called "the squinter" which is a somewhat complicated movement. It took me a while to teach it to two new students the other week, and I told them that's ok, it takes time. We'll move on for now and come back to it next week. So, you can do this technique in reverse and it also works... "Why didn't you teach us this one first?! It's way easier!" Now I know haha. I don't remember going through this when I learned the technique myself. That felt like getting a new stripe on a belt in teaching.

I once talked to a guy on the bus in Vegas about karate. He claimed that when he was in the military, some people came up to him and said hey do you wanna fight karate? He said yes why not? He claimed that they handed him a uniform and a black belt, and threw him right into a tournament. The story that he gave me was that there was not enough people practicing at the time in the area and they needed some warm bodies so to speak in the black belt competition. Him and a lot of other guys got on the spot recruitedand promoted and even placed in the tournaments. Do you believe this story or was I just talking to a rambling drunk drunk y dude? I kind of believe it at least to the extent where I could say that I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that it is absolutely true. And if you do believe it, what do you think that means? In my mind, it doesn’t really get rid of any legitimacy karate has or had to offer. Sometimes people know how to fight from other sports and or they may just have a knack.

I guess the "bending over when hit on the groin" is more of a thing that happens when people get hit like that on accident, or maybe with mailce, on a non-fight situation. They just bend over out of pain, as a relieve, maybe even going to fetal position, but only because don't feel to be in a "dangerous place" so to speak. THey are more concerned with making whatever they can as to relieve that injured place. But during a fight I guess that doesn't really happen that much, because of adrenaline, awareness of the dangerous situation, and all that. But I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe people that bend over only do it because they saw it on movies and the like XD Anyways, probably not the "ultimate fight ender" as some may think.

"Holding the phone" is an informal slang term for keeping at least a one-hand guard to the side of the face at nearly all times. It's a term that has been popularized by boxing analysts in America like Teddy Atlas and Tim Bradley. The question was about whether or not this is a good concept for defensive fighting but im not sure if he was asking in reference to just boxing or maybe mui thai or mma where one would need to defend against kicks as well as punches. He was asking if there's perhaps a better more effective default hand position for fighting defense, one that may allow for a more fluid defensive hand movement than simply keeping the hand "glued" to the face. It's a good question and I would like to know your answer to this as well.

Title* #BeenThere MANY masters in Asia do that to Foreigners (Gaijins in Japan by example) specially when it comes to secrets of their styles that comes from a particular schools or lineages and youre not part of their country, town, family or a direct disciple.. IN FACT i had one instructor in this country who did the same to me (But he didint know that i was already a master in the same style) so i just followed his BS for a month then i left because it was TOO Obvious (weapon based system using some stances and positions where body is left exposed in vital parts, to get you loose an extremity, die by bleedout or killed instantly) and it was totally on purpose and mostly because doing by repetition those routines your body and mind "unlearns" the right and starts to "learn" the wrongful way which its dangerous if you get into a situation where you have to apply that and you respond by reflex with the "wrong shit"

I'v always found it to be really strange how Karate took the belt system from Judo, while BJJ at first was just Judo's ne waza as you stated, but than for some reason, BJJ decided to look over at Karate and decide to try and have it so that only Black belts could instruct FP. There's also the case to be made, that sometimes people are just very good at instructing compared to competing etc. I'v heard of atleast 3 somewhat private bjj clubs here in the city that were started by guys that got to purple, or even just blue belt, and went on there own way to start rolling with some guys for recreation, and once in a while, one of these guys will wonder to a legit gym, and do fairly well, even though there not as fined tuned. Hours on the mat are still hours on the mat. Years ago, our instructors assistant had less time in training than alot of guys younger than him, he was also not the greatest sambist, or even in the greatest of shape. I'm sure he'd have a chuckle if he ever read this. Yet, he was an amazing teacher, and put alot of hours into studying it through books to get an idea of the techniques, but than also spent alot of private time with our instructor to try and sand down the techniques, and learn his ways. There was evident jealousy at times because of how fast he went from being a student to instructor, but i'v always personally believed he took it seriously and deserved it. He knew alot of tricks in scarf, some fairly unorthox stuff thats rare to see on youtube, but still legal and effective. Of all the fighters that won an mma fight, or i guess i should say pancrase rules fight, with one of the baited counters to scarf, that he really knew how to set up good, was actually one of Bas Ruttens victories by submission, and it's probably one of the only times you would see the submission in effect. Though i know what it looks like, I can't remember it's technical name, but it's basically a cradle pin of sorts. I think Bas just called it "the Bas Rutten neck crank." There are a few neck cranks from kesa gatame that many really don't know about, and many actually come from when a person tries to escape oddly enough. Anyway, He was a great instructor, and many of us still talk about him to this day. He left that kind of example and influence on alot of us. He left the area a while back and didn't really tell anyone where he ran off to, changed his number, didn't have any social media accounts, so unfortuantly we lost touch with him. He started instructing after just 2 of training, thats how soon it was. Yet, the guys that were our instructors first students when they were young would be lying if they said he didn't teach them something, or help them refine something. He just had it in him. At first, most of the guys that were there for a while were very furious and angry when he'd take them aside and try tell them how to improve something when he's beent here for 3 years and themselves for 10, but after a while they chilled out. Atleast he was older than everyone. When i use to work on the road, i'd get a workout in by stopping by local small town karate and taekwondo clubs, and i have so many stories for rob at mcdojo life im certain he would love. One thing i'm not a real fan of is when you step into one of these small town clubs, not dojo, because it's in the school gym, and a boy of about the age of maybe 12 walks in wearing not one, but two black belts that if untied would be longer than him if held up, and he than presumes to teach that day, and your wondering why your there, but just want to do some kicking and punching around people, and maybe get some pad work and light sparring in. Shouldn't judge the small towns. There trying, and atleast get out there and train. Great people, questionable practices. So 12 year with 2 black belts, not sure why, teaches class, meanwhile, they have multiple brown belts that are both adults and young adult's, that are not worthy enough of wearing the twin belts of destruction and choas. To no suprise the grand master is the original Senseis son that decided to take the night off because hes too busy breaking bricks or something, or enjoying some time at home. Karate just hasnt been the same for him since he fought that Shane guy. One thing i'v learnt is that a training centre that has no sign is a coin toss. Either you walk in, and you are doing the same kata for the entire day, or you walk in, and you do whatever the heck you want, with multiple things to do, as if every training day is just an open gym day. Bjj useless? Butt scooting. Sounds like a youtuber that calls bjj players butt scooters, says striking is great, but than goes on to say shadow boxing is a waste of time unless done in his superior veiw point. Way to get veiws i guess, but unreal. When it comes to public combat somewhere, against a potentially larger person, i'd suggest either wrestling or bjj to someone. i just can't understand it. I'm a fairly large and heavy man, that has done security work in adult establishments, aswell as trained in the comfortable and very safe and padded gym, and what i can say about when it comes to what will work against a larger person, well, i'd say a very high percentage of it is grappling. I'v been hit by women of all sizes, small to some as big as me, and some also dressed as, and i an say first hand that the ones dressed as hurt the most for some reason, but when it comes to real women, i'v never had a moment where a punch did enough to make me think this situation was going to go south. No, It doesn't help them in any kind of way. It's just an annoyance, and if they were bare fisted and i threw my head down towards it with there very telegraphed strike, i'm pretty sure there hand loses in a drastic way. Yet when grappling, i'v gone a bit easy on women and have ended up in a choke. arm locks, leg locks, not that great against a bigger guy, and though i'v always told myself that i'd never land in a triangle choke, as mentioned, going light against a women, i'v slipped up and landed in some, and with practice, thats putting a big guy out before he has the chance to do something serious to get out of it. How much time do the two week womens self defense course gurus spend on the triangle choke? probably tell them to avoid going to the ground, because we all know they won't if you tell them not to. The most damage i'v even taken apart from a choke however, was by the beautiful wonder woman herself when she came from a distant gym years ago to train witha few of us in ours as they were making there way eastword. Same thing, i was going causually, and she slipped under my arm to my outside left side, got a great lock on my waist, and she than gave me the power of flight for a few seconds, and i guess prove a point, because i went for a ride and landed hard. I was done, that tko'd me. I didn't want to look like a complete puss, so my adrenaline had me stand up to soon, and though i might of pretended like i was alright, i wasn't. i was done for a few minutes at that point. I just can't understand those guys. When it comes to the potential of grappling, you just need to ask a person "have you every hard gym stuck in your hair as a kid? or adult? We all know the gum wins. thats like bjj, but x5 atleast, and you don't even pull their hair. Thats He-man kind of power. I always have a fairly good laugh at these women self defesnse videos, and what styles these guys think would be best Most of them being wrong. I'd just say a simple 50/50 of freestyle wrestling for slams, positions, and bjj for the chokes. Some bjj schools teach enough of it to be complete.
