Clive Jones, the singer and bass player from the Black Abbots, passed away this morning. One of the best voices in the business. RIP Clive.

OMG we loved these guys, saw them as often as we could at Allinsons Litherland Theatre Club near Liverpool. They were one of the best acts around but once Russ Abbot left they seemed to disappear, he went on to make it big style (I don't know why, but my hubby does)! Their whole act was just amazing from the jokes to the presentation and most definitely the singing-their creme de la creme was 'Hey Jude' I am not sure who is who in the group but tended to think it was perhaps Carl that did this one as he had usually been pretty quiet all night, well singing and on guitar while the main man of the group did all the singing (good looking with tash)lol! They did this as good as McCartney, perhaps slightly better as you had the live audience there and you were literally next to the stage. Such a shame they did not go for it big style but there were just groups everywhere way back then and they would have needed a pretty damn good new song! Miss them like crazy and so very sad to hear of the deaths of two members, gets us all in the end hey !! :(

Great Sadness this evening...Bobby Turner the lead guitarist from this great Band...past away last night. I'm so glad I've had contact with him over the last 10 years and managed to create a Facebook group for the the band. Thanks for all you did for the group Bob. Rest in peace mate 🙏

Bobby Turner (guitarist) is my uncle, still playing guitar at home, fiddling with bits of recording equipment and enjoying music, but a lot has changed since then! They were a fantastic band, Clive had a unique talent - Fantastic. I feel they could have done so much more with their opportunities but still had the chance to record inspirational music like this. Should have gone world wide in their day, they had the chance to. Love this version of the song.

This album brings back so many fantastic memories. My dad always used to play it Saturday afternoons after he finished work! He went to see them at Jollees in Longton where it was recorded. Great band. Only wish I had the chance to see them.

I saw them in the late 70's in the old Caerphilly Double Diamond club, when they did this the vocal blew me away.

Clive Jones' daughter taught my media class for our A Levels, introduced us to the Black Abbots earlier today in fact. She told us her dad still sings from time to time, mostly for charity events :)

I think that this was recorded in 1978 in Sheffield (?). I eventually got to hear Clive Jones sing this live in 1992 and if anything - his vocals were even more stunning than they are on this recording. If there was any justice in the world - then Clive Jones should have been a Rock Star!

Nogferatu This was definitely recorded in Stoke on Trent at Jollies .

Hi Clive Jones was a good friend of mine but we lost touch years ago. He had the best voice I've ever heard and could make anything sound great. I've been trying to get in touch for a few years now but can't seem to find him on the internet. Pete Reidy. singer / songwriter
