The Black Cauldron (PC/DOS) 1986, Longplay, Sierra on-line

Based on the Disney movie of the same name, The Black Cauldron focuses on the story of Taran, who is an assistant Pig-keeper in the land of Caer Dalben. One day Taran notices that one of his pigs, Hen Wen has magical powers. The Evil Horned King wants the pig so that he can locate the Black Cauldron and ultimately rule the world. Taran must now embark on a mission to rescue Hen Wen and defeat the Evil Horned King before he can discover the Cauldron's location.
The Black Cauldron is a side-view adventure game. Gameplay is similar to other Sierra adventure games of its day (such as Space Quest II or King's Quest III) but does not use a text parser. Instead the function keys are used to initiate actions. Players control Taran and can make him walk, run, swim and interact (talk) with other characters in the game. Puzzle-solving and advancement in the plot requires item manipulation of using the right item at the right time or at the right location.

As a child, this game inspired me to draw up similar scenes in a notebook with certain actions and movements referring to different page numbers. I also drew maps and super Mario levels on paper. Somehow never ended up studying game design, but still fascinated by game mechanics and such.

Extremely advanced, for an atari game. Player had to manage hunger and inventory, find water, search each screen very carefully to find all the textboxes for immersion, and the game had multiple paths and endings. A far cry from the glorious animation of the movie it's based on, but the pixellated graphics do kinda grow on you. I love the use of tv channel static to simulate running water, such as a nearby river. they really went all out with the limited technology of the time.

This game was definitely more fir kids and therefore easier. You can tell from the cliff wall climb and the long paths. They don't require the pixel perfect movement to avoid falling to your death. This was the only adventure game I got a perfect score on with no help. The KQ series had too many puzzles that were basically "Read Ken and Roberta's minds to know what they want you to do here.", but this was more intuitive. Of course, the fact that it wasn't a text input game also helped make it easier.

I love how FF and Eilonwy are rescued, then disappear for the rest of the game and only reappear in the final cutscene whereas Gurgi is less prominent than even the castle guard.

There are multiple paths through the game. Gurgi shows up and sacrifices himself in one version, and the game ends when you trade the cauldron for him to come back to life.

Id like to find a single playthru where people go visit the king of the fairys and get the flying powder. Most people dont but it makes the castle parts way easier At least you got hen wen to the fair folk. Most playthrus Ive seen they get picked up by the gwythaint with hen wen.

This is an EGA or VGA display. I used to play this on CGA back in the day, which was an awful color scheme of pink, teal, and white. Still had a blast with it though!

If I remember correctly, I often died by falling from the castle, by drowning in the river or by being captured by a guard. It was a difficult game.
