The new album is sick. Trevor really stepped up the atmosphere with his vocals. Alan’s foot and cymbal work is hypnotizing and the guitars are a double assault of metal shrapnel.

The black dahlia murder for me has always been this constant force of what goes bump in the night, to their horror inspired music videos to their crazy if you call it “normal” guy appearance on stage... They constantly evolve through every album release since their Debut with unhallowed. And with that *Every* Album has held the 3 syllable title, which for me is amazing, they don’t stray far from their formula since arguably when Nocturnal released with new hailing Guitarist *Knight* is when they found their “Sound”... Deflorate releases, for me it was a continuation on the sound of nocturnal as well as death and murder... others hated it... which is fine more for me... Ritual releases, it painted a world of decimation and pirate zombie skeletons ( for me ) and everyone thought that there is no way that they could top it... enter Abysmal, saw the day that *Lucas* decided to step down, and let *Cassidey* be on the throne.... this album from the art cover to the last track and the lost tracks ( if you bought the limited edition with mini disc ) was flawless in the execution, I thought that the production guy kinda fucked them a bit as it was lacking in comparison to their previous efforts, however Abysmal wrought forth Vlad the dragon to engulf every living soul... by now all the Fvckers that despised them before *Love* them... Nightbringers, and the loss of *Knight* This album brought forth a new fire set off under their asses with new Guitarist *Ellis* This guy just wakes the dead and Keeps their sound alive with flare... this was a fantastic album and my first time ( was trying to see them for over a decade live ) to see them live in Germany with Cannibal Corpse! Verminous, they continue their Reign in Death and Murder, with Black Metal influences scurried ( you know cause of the rodents and shit ) about, they continue to be inspired by Horror and their peers they’ve looked up to. This album brings the Filth, the Nasty, the grotesque, the dark, the grittiness back into their fold that *Unhallowed* and *Miasma* had. For me this album brings hope that there is a better place for metal, that there will be new bands that will/are inspired by the black dahlia murder, that it will just keep getting heavier and nastier... Thank You Trevor and the rest of The Black Dahlia Murder for making a kickass album!!!

Everblack is probably my favourite of the Cassidy albums but that's not saying much. Not sure if it's cause Brian now shares more of the writing duties moving them away from that classic sound or because Alan can play 1000bpm a lot of the songs are too fast and sing have time to breathe, I just don't love modern day TBDM as much as the Nocturnal/Deflorate era.

Nice review Brad. Your comparison to Chuck Billy and Tom Araya in the thrash influenced vocals was an interesting bit. It is something we will look for as we review the album ourselves. Also like how you pointed out songs like Sunless Empire having a less is more approach because that is totally how we felt in our first impression as well. The fact of this also being the year of the rat was a cool thing to mention as well and it would be interesting to know if that was coincidence or not. Keep up the good work our fellow Canadian metalhead!

When I got my pre-order a little early and gave it a spin, I immediately knew this album was going to be polarizing. Nightbringers was just a beautiful TBDM album that was everything the band stood for, and this one took a different direction, taking a lot more risks. It's an album you have to dig into and fully digest to "get it". Man, it's a rollercoaster for sure and I think it's going to age like wine.

I got my Verminous preorder a few weeks ago and I have to say this album was more of a slow burn than Nightbringers was. Now that I’ve listened to it a bunch I absolutely love it, but I think you’re right about listening to this in different frames of mind. The layers woven throughout this make this album more rewarding with every listen!

I f**king love this album. It's actually gotten better with time and it's among my favorites from BDM. Unlike others I was sold immediately on the musical changes and didn't need time for it to sit with me, which usually isn't the case for me. The saddest part is this will be the last BDM album. We'll never hear Trevor's amazing vocal deliveries, stage presence and those amazing, amazing lyrics. He's left a chasm that can never be filled, and one that was wholly unique to him and the bands music and image. It's been a little over a week and I still can't stop thinking of him RIP, Trevor.

I'll be honest. In the past I've always just cherry picked songs when it comes to TBDM. Was never a huge fan personally but fully understood their talent along the way. This album is different. This will probably go down as my 2020 metal album of the year. I don't foresee anyone else outdoing it. It's melodic, moody, blisteringly heavy. The mix/production is top tier and the album is just so so good in every category. It checks literally every box for me. Brandon Ellis is a god. Current favorite track: Sunless Empire.

Great to get a Banger review of this! BDM are held to such a high standard. Was worried you were gonna overly critique this based on the numerous influences but that's what makes the record. I'd rather see evolution from a band than the same old stuff. The detail in this album and the variety in the riffs, solos and vocals is immense. Atmosphere is so dark and dreary it's great. Really cool observations on the songs and comparisons. Great job and great to see Banger TV still chugging. Shout outs are awesome as well!

This is the best review I've seen you do Brad, always great but this was one particularly great. I'm going to need to spend more time with Verminous. I've only given it the one spin. Despite it being a very solid album with some great songs I think I was misled by my own expectations. Nightbringers is the best album of TBDM's career for me, and it is an absolute faceripper start to finish. I applaud them for going a different way on Verminous, but I was hoping for more of the same. I think time will be kind to the direction they've decided to go on this one and I'll come to appreciate it more, but for me, the immediate impression is, if I'm putting on a TBDM album, I'm immediately reaching for Nightbringers and I was hoping that this would topple it.

The most incredible thing about Black Dahlia is that despite all their lineup changes, they keep *improving*. They replace amazing musicians with even more amazing musicians and are always messing around with new sounds. Ryan Knight was an educated musician who wrote a lot of cool and complex music. If you listen to Brandon Ellis talk, that dude is like music Rain Man. He's insane. They traded up on drummers too, somehow, because Shannon was a force, when Alan joined.

DonutsRYummy I listen to so many bands and I do have every BDM on my phone for when I’m at the gym so when I listen to a band several times per week I tend to not think about them too much once I get home. I want something new and maybe not even Metal. With that said there are so many bands out there I’m listening to 10 or more new releases per week so it’s easy to let things fall through the cracks. The same thing almost happened with Allegaeon but I did find the studio updates a month before release. Now I’m so disappointed in myself I probably won’t miss another release date for at least 6 months. The last Amon Amarth also hit me out of nowhere.

Black Dahlia has always been one of my favorites, every album has gotten better in different ways. Nocturnal or Deflorate will always be my favorites but damn, they kill it every single time.

Some great references you used here. I heard this album last night and while I like The Black Dahlia Murder I have always felt they write some great songs on subpar albums. BUT THIS whole album is fuckin killer. I kept thinking how much more Intricate the riffs were and how much overall great songwriting is on this album. Probably their overall best album. Some of their greatest songs were on weak albums, In Hell is Where She Waits for Me, I Will Return, Receipt.

At this point it would be hard to stick them to any specific genre. They have so many styles throughout their albums

Hey Brad, nice hearing from you! I agree with a lot of what you said, especially about Ellis' and Strnads work here. Except I only listened to it twice and I loved the progressive parts from the start. Phylogenesis is also great. Check out Oranssi Pazuzu, it's crazy as fuck. Also, Bismarck have a new Album out, Norwegian Doom. Thanks for the video!

Dahlia is a very big nostalgic bans for me. I'll always love them. The new albums are all pretty cool. But, the Ryan Knight era is easily my favorites. Ritual is the god tier TBDM album.

How many times should one listen to a new album before being able to give a "proper" review???? I think 3 at the minimum myself. I have been wrong both ways when jumping to quick conclusions after just a listen or 2. There is a lot that needs to settle in, in some cases. Some of the deeper albums that continue to grow on me wind up being some of my favorites!

Yeah man this album really came alive on the 3rd and 4th listen. Some albums take some time if you have the patience. Night fingers hit on the first listen. Same with nocturnal back in the day.
