Moulay Ismail ibn Sharif was a 17th-century sultan of Morocco and the leader of the famous army called the Black Guard.

Born to a prince and a black slave, together with his brother, Moulay Ismail founded the Alaouite dynasty, which is still the ruling family of Morocco.
Known as the Warrior King in the Moroccan history, sultan Moulay managed to unite the land under his rule. At the time, various disloyal tribes split up Morocco and they were hard to control. However, with the Black Guard, an army of black slaves that numbered up to 150,000 men, Ismail easily seized power.
The personality of the Sultan was very intriguing in itself. He claimed to be a descendant of Muhammad, the founder of Islam. He was also a very strict leader - any kind of perceived disobedience would be punished by death.
Ismail is perhaps most famous for siring hundreds of children. His name is written in The Guinness Book of World Records for having made most children - 1171 of them. His royal palace was filled with his wives and 500 concubines.
Any man, woman or animal that annoyed Ismail would be dealt with swiftly. The Sultan ordered more than 30,000 killings unrelated to wartimes. He also had a huge prison for Christians, which counted up to 60,000 inmates.
When he died, the Black Guard failed to keep discipline. They fell apart soon after Moulay Ismail left them behind.

@idontlikejuice the black guard was first founded in 1088 by Yusuf ibn tachfine of the Almoravids, the following dynasties kept it with their little tweaking as an elite unit. Moulay ismaïl of the Alaouite dynasty boosted up the numbers and turned it into a standing professional army but it was never dissolved as it still serves as of today

First of all, Moulay ismail had more than one brother. Secondly the Alaouite dynasty started way before moulay Rachid, they were ruling a kingdom inside morocco. Under the reign of moulay Rachid who eventually united the rest of the kingdom. Besides the dark image given in this video about King ismail, he was a great builder and he left many monuments for morocco. And he was very protective over the christian and jewish citizens, those "christian jails" were for war jails. Maybe he was brutal with the rebelling tribes in his country, but they were threatening the unity of the moroccan territory which would've made Morocco an easy prey for the ottoman empire who was their neighboor that time. And finally moroccan people do not wear these saudi dresses.

This made me think of another Black Guard that beat people up in the name of a monarch... After slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1882 by the Princess and at the time regent Isabel, many freed slaves turned to loving, and at times revering, the imperial family. This love eventually turned into hate towards those who protested for a republic in Brazil, creating the 'Guarde negra' or black guard; a group of fighting ex-slaves, many of them practitioners of capoeira, that hunted any all things republican.

Ismail lost trust in “white Moroccans” after an assassination attempt. He said he could only trust blacks. His decree was strongly opposed by most Moroccan scholars because he wanted free black Muslims enslaved which they felt was illegal. So no not all blacks in Morocco at that time were slaves. It’s also argued that many blacks were willing to serve because of Ismail’s black mother. The black guard were the slave drivers of the numerous white slaves in Morocco at that time. It also should be noted that Ismail’s favourite wife was a black lady called Zidana. She was the power behind the throne.

best amv No after Europeans brought and end to the slavery of white Christians in North Africa in the 1830s, the slavery of blacks continued up until the 20th century. However this was domestic slavery. Slavery of Europeans was most Chattel slavery with hard labor or on the Galleys.

In 1699, Ismail gave orders to enslave all black Africans in Morocco, even those who were born free or who were Muslim, and, consequently, he violated two of the central tenants of Islamic law concerning slavery and generated a potent new form of racist discourse in the region that associated black Africans with slavery.Moroccan registers show that Ismail enslaved over 221,000 black Moroccans between 1699-1705.

Yami Bakura Competent, the author of the video, although making a good job, brushed a very dark portrait of the sultan, since his accession to power he was surrounded by ennemies, Clercs that wanted their rights back, tribes that refused to give allegeance and later, sons and grand-sons that grew tired of this never-dying monarchs, he had to be very strict and cruel sometimes to be respected and to keep the country stable, his sole mitake was his stuborness to let his heirs do a survival of the fittest thing, if you want to see an example of what gould have happened to morocco had he not been that strict, I recommend the life of Shah Rukh Khan and the last decades of Timurid empire.

While on the topic of black Moroccans, could you do a video on Abu Bakr ibn Umar, General Bassa, Mulay Rashid, or even the Rif Pirates?
@k.2382
@k.2382 2 жыл бұрын
None of them were black (and if they were they were not Moroccans) but okay, keep trying blackie 🙊. General Bassa was a BLACK SLAVE from subsaharan ancestors who was freed. Mulay Rashid was not black, and The riff pirates… 😂😂😂😂 that’s the most ridiculous part. Come to the riff and you will see how “black” they are, they look more European than most Mediterranean people. They are white or olive skinned and they used to enslave Europeans and black people. Stop stealing our legacy and changing the narrative. Try harder next time.

I'm kinda flattered since I'm a Yusuf Ibn Tashfin's descendant. I even look like him in physical appearance according to description. Yet I'm also depressed to see his main achievements and souvenirs were destroyed by his own people. First, he was the founder of the first Muslim-Amazigh EMPIRE in North Africa (there were some emirates but not empires or kingdoms). Second, he was the first to make Arabic the official language even though he himself was Amazigh... Now, since you are moroccan, look at what some of our fellow Amazigh people claim (FYI, Before Almorabids there were two caliphates and a kingdom that were purely Arabs and none of them imposed Arabic, just saying!). Third, he made the Maliki doctrine the official in the area, now look at what people do including our Senhaji brethren (the same tribe Yusuf belongs to) when the sacrifice animals and do a bunch of strange rituals in cemetries and such like pagans and polytheists. Fourth, he founded the major flouriching city of Marrakesh with a serious-strategic military theme to connect the areas and help moving the armies flexibly... Now again, look at what has become of Marrakesh where europpean and gulf arabian pedophilian and gay old cuckold couples please their desires with the flesh of our children. I think my ancestor, just like most moroccan ancestors who were noble muslims, would be truly disappointed if they could see us (their hopes and concerns) live this humiliation. I myself, decided to move to Istanbul, where there's a glimpse of hope to raise my offspring with the values of our ancestors... Maybe one day they would do great to fix things. We, the Senhaji people, are nomads after all... In fact, our ancestors (before Islam) came all the way from Sabaa (Yemen) and we shall continue to move across the world and be on the side of the serious and the just people. PS: There's still hope in morocco too by the way, but it has a long way... I mean just look at the people, unlike Turkey, we are still mugging each other on the streets and we are still worshipping the descendants of this very Moulay Ismail like if they were true half-gods! And, worst of all, we talk more than we work... which unfotunately shows that we are not ready nor serious to fix anything yet.

This sultan is going to hell for sure even killing animals and torturing them for no reason guarantees you entrance in to hellfire. Prophet described one women who entered hell because she tied a cat not feeding it and thus it died. Another woman was thirsty but she had to go down a well to drink it. On her way up she saw a dog whimpering licking the ground obviously thirsty. So she went down filled up her shoe with water and gave the dog water and she entered heaven.
