Born to a prince and a black slave, together with his brother, Moulay Ismail founded the Alaouite dynasty, which is still the ruling family of Morocco.
Known as the Warrior King in the Moroccan history, sultan Moulay managed to unite the land under his rule. At the time, various disloyal tribes split up Morocco and they were hard to control. However, with the Black Guard, an army of black slaves that numbered up to 150,000 men, Ismail easily seized power.
The personality of the Sultan was very intriguing in itself. He claimed to be a descendant of Muhammad, the founder of Islam. He was also a very strict leader - any kind of perceived disobedience would be punished by death.
Ismail is perhaps most famous for siring hundreds of children. His name is written in The Guinness Book of World Records for having made most children - 1171 of them. His royal palace was filled with his wives and 500 concubines.
Any man, woman or animal that annoyed Ismail would be dealt with swiftly. The Sultan ordered more than 30,000 killings unrelated to wartimes. He also had a huge prison for Christians, which counted up to 60,000 inmates.
When he died, the Black Guard failed to keep discipline. They fell apart soon after Moulay Ismail left them behind.
