What's going on my fellow rock n' rollers. Don't forget to hit the bell notification icon to be notified every time i pout out a new video on my channel. This is one of the more recent feuds in the rock n’ roll world between the genre’s most popular artists. I’m talking about the Jack White and Black Keys feud, but did they ever make amends, stay tuned to find out.
Formed in 2001 the Black Keys broke through nationally, with 2003’s Thickfreakness, which saw them garner rave reviews and open for Beck. The same year Jack White's band the White Stripes had their own mammoth album called Elephant featuring the huge song seven nation army. Both bands were stripped down bluesy duos so comparisons were inevitable. What’s funny is that at this point in time the black keys claimed to have not heard of the white stripes when they first started as a band several years prior. Following the dissolution of The White Stripes in 2009 the Black Keys would become a dominant band taking over the rock charts.
The feud started back in 2010 when Jack white sat down with rolling stone magazine and the exchange went as follows with interviewer asking
There was a time this past decade when the idea of “garage rock” included bands that sounded nothing like the White Stripes. Do you feel like you have peers out there now that aren't necessarily doing the same kind of music, but work on the same level?
It's difficult to say. I feel like I'm a lot more to do with Jay-Z than I do with the Black Keys. And I don't know what that is, it's just a feeling. he'd say and he wouldn’t elaborate any further on the black keys in that interview.
Two years after that statement by white the black keys were interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine and an incident from 2012 was revealed where White had allegedly barred Black Keys frontman and guitarist Dan Auberach from entering Jack White’s nashville recording studio. The black keys frontman didn’t want to add fuel to the fire, but when the magazine reached out to Jack White for comment he had an odd response saying Anything you’ve ever heard anyone say about me is 100 percent accurate.”
The following year is where things really took a bizarre turn as White was involved in a nasty divorce with his ex-wife model Karen Elson. Elson filed a restraining order against White following allegations of harassment and soon enough leaked emails that Elson used in court to file her restraining order against White made numerous references to the Black Keys. Those emails would show how infuriated White was when he learned his children were attending the same school as the children of Keys frontman Dan Auerbach. One of the messages would read "That's a possible twelve fing years I'm going to have to be sitting in kids chairs next to that with other people trying to lump us in together, "He gets yet another free reign to follow me around and copy me and push himself into my world" the email would read.
The Black Keys took the high road as in 2014, when the band's drummer Patrick Carney struck a more sympathetic tone telling Rollin Stone Magazine,"As fed up as that is, that was a private conversation. We've all said real messed up stuff in private. You know how horrifying it would be if all of our private stuff was aired? Divorce is hard. It should be kept private, and people go sniffing around looking for this stuff. And ultimately, it's no one's business. He obviously sounds like a ahole. And I actually feel embarrassed for him. But, no, I don't hold grudges, man. I really don't." Auerbach meanwhile would add "I don't know him, so it's extra unexpected" he'd say
The same year in May of 2014 during a cover story for Rolling Stone White slammed the keys again revealing
"There are kids at school who dress like everybody else, because they don't know what to do, and there are musicians like that too. I'll hear TV commercials where the music's ripping off sounds of mine, to the point I think it's me. Half the time, it's the Black Keys. The other half, it's a sound-alike song because they couldn't license one of mine. There's a whole world that's totally fine with the watered-down version of the original" he'd say. In the same interview he'd add:
"Some people will hear that and say, 'Oh, Jack White thinks he's the first person to play the blues. But certain acts open up a market for a certain style. Amy Winehouse: Did she invent wh

@Dan D IDK man. I never listened to the Black Keys, other than what was on the radio. I never liked'em. I was just saying that once you take money from a record company, and then jump through the hoops, and get rich, you can't call your shit, your shit anymore. I liked the White Stripes back in the day, but regardless of that, there are many of their songs that sound like other peoples shit. When a musician starts screaming "They're ripping of my stuff," it always makes them look like shit, to the people who get it. Blues musicians ripped each other off all the damn time, because they understood that claiming somebody stole some licks from ya, makes you look like a fool. White claims everybody ripped his ass. Hence he looks like a fool.

there's an interview of paul mccartney, where he says he used to be bitter not winning enough awards. these kind of artists, who devote their life to being great, want to be treated like such. they have a difficulty being a common "normal person", probably due to a lack of appreciation from their peers and family in their formative years. I know that from experience... that's why you do see them very emotional when they get into things like the rock n roll hall of fame. only few artists get consistently appreciated and adored, like thom yorke i'd say.

It's more than that, they only had 2 members, they both did the whole old, cheap, unloved retro gear thing, they both were hugely influenced by the blues. I'm not even a huge fan of either act but they definitely had similarities. They sound different and you wouldn't get them confused but the Rolling Stones and Beatles were doing basically the same thing when they first started too. yeah I heard an attempt at this comparison years ago and didn't get it either. I liked the white stripes for 5 minutes, then later loved the black keys, but to me the white stripes is more an original sound punk blues with a touch of the kind of experimental song writing you get from nick cave and beck, whereas the black keys was more an organic continuation of all the blues that had come before, I mean their first several albums had multiple covers of early 20th century blues songs, and chulahoma is a whole album of Junior Kimbrough.. and when the Keys developed a more original sound with Danger Mouse producing, there is a lot of that Danger Mouse sound in it which is nothing like Jack White... I think Jack was just reacting to the inaccurate comparisons that other talentless muso journalists were making, without really knowing where the black keys were actually coming from cause their sound sure as hell wasn't based on listening to his music.

yeah Adele and Amy Winehouse is the most bizarre comparison in this whole non-affair, the only thing they have in common is being white british female singer songwriters. Winehouse's music sprang from a love of Sinatra and that kind of music, and she sang it with her crazy f''ed up vocal chords, Winehouse is just random outlier success from a very independent sound. Adele and other successful female singer songwriters, owe none of their mainstream pop success to Winehouse's outlier style and music.. that's a bizarre tribute to Winehouse to say they do, when it seems her success was far less likely and predictable than the more standard poppy sound of Adele and co. Also it seems to me calling either of them "soul" singers strips the term of all meaning.

One if the guys from ministry very kindly lied and said our set was great. So many successful musicians, I just wanted to ask them so many questions, but I was trying to keep it cool. I remember thinking "This is what I want for my life..." And then Billy Corgan cracked the shits from inside his trailer and had security escort me and my bandmates out of the backstage area. Apparently he didn't like not being the centre of attention. We were making too much noise (Beastie Boys were onstage as security came). James was really embarrassed and apologetic. We didn't even see Billy the whole time were were back there. He went straight from stage to trailer. From what I heard, he left for his hotel less than half an hour after having us kicked out. And like, even Chris Cornell said hello when he walked past, you know? God himself was kind and generous towards us kids in the local band. EVERYONE on the whole tour was an awesome, friendly person who were kind and generous to the younger musicians on the tour. Except Billy Corgan.

Jack is just salty. C'mon, even Paul Stanley from Kiss (such a big brand in rock) was wise enough to say "Jimmy Page wrote a book, we wrote a page in it". Both White Stripes and Black Keys have their own, distinct style and sound, but they both evolved from hard rock roots planted in the 70ties. Jack acts like he's the only worthy torch bearer of hard rock flame. How about writing new kick ass White Stripes album instead of talking shit?

As much as I enjoy Jack’s White Stripes music and recognize it had some impact on music at the time, Jack is vastly overstating the influence he thinks he has by believing himself to be some pioneer of blues heavy rock and being the first person to open that as a massive market with audiences. Rock in its foundation was derived in part by the blues and there are plenty of older bands like Black Sabbath which merged the blues with modern rock sensibilities. You could easily have a band that sounds like the White Stripes without them having heard one song of theirs. There’s plenty of past influences to draw from for that.

The White Stripes and The Black Keys are both blues-rock duos that have Midwestern rust belt roots and some of the same musical influences such as Led Zeppelin, Iggy Pop and the stooges, and Junior Kimbrough, so of course there was some similarities in their sounds. Both Jack White and members of the keys have really evolved their musical taste over the years. White's third man records does a great job of releasing garage rock, folk, country, even some hip-hop records. Dan Auerbach produces and plays on records of all genres from Mississippi Hill music to 60's style soul to African Saharan rock.

I always thought this was the most petulant, and unnecessary fued in music. At the time, it soured me a bit on Jack White. Those two units do very different things, neither of which casts a shadow on the other. I never thought of them together really before it got brought up, beyond being a two piece band as well. What Jack White does is very original and eccentric, he is an absurd force to be reckoned with. It's a strange, unique, artistic style that is not worth trying to bite. That's where his value emerges out of, his artistry. But what makes what The Black Keys so special is much more straightforward but isnruwally valid and has everything to songwriting. It's undeniable how well written their music is, and on some level Jack must have always seen it in them himself - and it seems to me he possibly or almost had to env them to have been such a cunt about it. In any event, I'm pleased to hear that the terms between them are what they are - and nothing would please me more than to hear what come out of that collaboration.

The Black Keys were forming up and hanging out in the same period that the White Stripes did. The Black Keys recorded music together almost by accident to start with while the White Stripes were still not a big hit yet. By the time the Whitestripes would be recognizable to more of the general public the Black Keys had released 2 albums. So to me this never made sense. Seemed like a weird egotistical thing from Gillis expecting everyone to know what he's been up to lately. I have to agree with others that Jack seems to have really poor self esteem that requires him to get too harsh for dumb things. I can't imagine how Meg handled him for that long. Now let me watch his epic SNL performance again with his perfectly timed Eddie tribute. Just because someone has some issues doesn't mean that they aren't great.

I can tell you how it came about. Steve Jones and those guys played at the Viper Room. They were a hot band and seen by industry people, some execs threw a huge advance at them (there was still big money in music for bands back then) they made that record but then the Pistols got back together so it never really went anywhere. I bought the album when it came out and it got some airplay, I imagine because punk was hot at the time, but it was a pretty mediocre album overall, the music was good but it just didn't have the "edge" the Pistols or GNR had (maybe the Taylor/Duran Duran influence took away the edge)

And the first time I saw The White Stripes on teevee I really really hated what I saw. But then I listened to Elephant a few times and it started to grow on me. (I'll give any album the 'three full listens' treatment.) I know people have been raving about The Black Keys for ages, I finally got around to getting an album (can't remember the name right now), and I think it's a pretty great album. I haven't yet listened to The Dead Weather or The Raconteurs. But after listening to Jack's solo albums and the work he's done with other artists, to my ear I think he's an incredible song writer and musician with incredible talent. His solo albums are very high on my list of what will always be on the thumb drive in the car.
