According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2019, approximately 16.2% of Black adults in the United States experienced a diagnosable mental illness in the past year. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that major depressive disorder affects around 13.4% of Black adults in the U.S., which is higher than the national average.
Access to Mental Health Care:
The American Psychological Association (APA) highlights disparities in mental health care access among Black individuals, with only about one-quarter of Black Americans receiving mental health care compared to 40% of white Americans.
MENTAL ILLNESS DOESN'T DISCRIMINATE. IT COMES IN ALL SIZES, RACES THE YOUNG, THE OLD, IT CAN AFFECT ANYBODY. IT DOESN'T CARE ABOUT POPULARITY OR SOCIO ECONOMIC STATUS. IT DOESN'T WAIT UNTIL THE RIGHT TIME TO START MANIFESTING. OLD AND YOUNG, MENTAL ILLNESS HAS NO FACE. NO LOGIC. NO RHYME OR REASON. WELCOME TO THE FACINAING WORLD OF MENTAL HEALTH.
