I personally feel like he would've let Finney go because Finney was special, but THEN Finney lied saying he was Taylor, and so the grabber didn't let him go as he'd know fully well Finney would say what happened so he couldn't get more victims. I think that's what happened

As convincing as it sounds, it was a Mind Game. He was already wearing the Disappointed Mask and knew Finny's name. Notice how he starts with "Nothing's going right." and when Finny suggests he lets him go, he says "I'm thinking about it." None of it was true. It was all to lure Finny into a state of hope. Let's pretend Finny was honest and said his actual name, The Grabber probably had an alternate plan for that answer. "Well, now you have to stay, because we're friends." Regardless, the "I almost let you go." is to take that hope away and make the victim feel worse.

Why is the main boy, Finney, so pretty? It's obvious that the makers purposely looked for a boy actor with longer hair so that The Grabber could play with it and have the boy have such an innocent face so you'd feel sorry for him. If a 13 year old is taken to see this movie afterwards they need to be told that if they thought that anything depicted in this film is scary they need to know that the spooky mysterious stranger is (mostly) the movie 9 times out of 10 the person who takes you to the park, out back really quick, showing you something cool, or just having a private conversation. The person you trust, a friend or someone you know.That's the person that takes you to the basement. A 13 year old, mature or not, is still just a child. And they NEED to know that when you have absolutely no reason to be suspicious. That's when you need to be suspicious.
