Genuinely, I never thought I'd be unnerved by a monster movie from the old days with stop-motion monsters, but this pulls it off.

It’s the death-spasm animations that O’Brien and Harryhausen specialized in that always get me. Something so inherently gross (and yet totally organic) about little touches like that.

The last great work of special effects pioneer Willis O'brien, creator of King Kong and mentor of Ray Harryhausen.

This goddamned movie lived rent-free in my head for a decade after seeing it as a kid. Still amazed they got away with the horrible little shots of it tearing up its victims, given the era.

the greatest stop motion movie ever made even the scene where the people turned into stop motion human puppet getting grabbed or eaten alive even at the stadium the truck picking up a stop motion soldier.

Love how the scorpions don't always move at the same speed, sometimes lurking slowly; it really maximizes the creepiness. And it's such impressively smooth stop-motion work, sadly spoiled by incomplete empty mattes and those hideous optical printer zooms used to try to hide recycled shots. (How many times does the poor creature in _The Giant Behemoth_ step on that same car?) Oh, and that accursed slobber-puppet used for close-ups of the scorpions' "face."

Bonus: In addition to 0:03 This same sound effect that was used for the movie THEM! Guess what I called that stop motion sequence fight in Honey I Shrunk The Kids? “THEM VS THE BLACK SCORPIONS”. A little bit catchy, right?

Unfortunately, the film was shot in black in white. Unless someone makes a colorized version, we are stuck with this version.

What if Gamera should fight these giant prehistoric scorpions at near by volcano 🐢🦂🦂🦂🦂🦂
@mdalsted2 ай бұрын
The smallest version of Gamera stood at 30 meters in height, and I think even that size means he dwarfs these scorpions. However, if the scorpions' venom is potent enough, they might at least stand a fighting chance. That is, if Gamera doesn't stay far away enough to char them with his fire/plasma breath.

Isn't the worm creature at 1:54 a leftover from the deleted pit scene from the original King Kong movie?
@daschwah2 ай бұрын
According to Ray Harryhausen, those models were probably rubberized mush in a warehouse by the time this movie came out. But it was Obie O’Brien (Ray’s mentor and the Kong effects wiz) who worked on this, so he might have had some of the original molds (or just a determination to have those creatures show up in a movie).
