Iraq War and its aftermath. The Black Watch was once a famous Scottish regiment in its own right. It is now a battalion within the Royal Regiment of Scotland, and part of the British Army.
In 2004, about 500 Black Watch were deployed to central Iraq to fill in behind American forces south-west of Baghdad. This was to enable a US assault on the centre of the insurgency in the town of Fallujah, where numerous 'Saddam remnants' remained loyal to their deposed leader and determined to fight the invaders of their country - in unholy but increasingly potent alliance with their new allies Al Qaeda in Iraq.
In the UK, this deployment was politically controversial. An earlier request by the British Army (with the support of the prime minister Tony Blair) for more UK troops to help the Americans near Baghdad had been turned down by the increasingly hapless defence secretary Geoff Hoon (nickname Buff Hoon). This time it appeared that Mr. Hoon had been by-passed by his boss, and Black Watch went north - outside the British-controlled Multi-National Division (South East). They were deployed to an area known as The Triangle of Death, but sustained few casualties.
