Dan Kelly was such a great play by play man. It's a shame he passed away a young man, he left a legacy of all time great calls.

The best ever.. He died of lung cancer. I've heard he smoked. John keeps his dad's legacy going in St.Louis. I was living in Florida when John was the first Tampa Bay announcer in 1992 before years later he went to Colorado, and then St.Louis. He had a higher pitched voice than his dad on midtone/average impact game plays, but was slightly lower than his dad in the bigger or scoring plays calls. Other than that, they had almost the exact same style, rhythm and pacing and that higher echelon talent level. I have never heard Dan Jr. Jerry Trupiano who Kelly mentored in St.Louis while "Troop" was his producer/board-op/ engineer, was the voice of the Houston Aeros in the WHA, and was pretty darnmned good himself. I listened to him when I was a teen and early 20's kid. Dan Jr. did Columbus for awhile, but is no longer there. Yep, Dan Kelly Sr. never saw the 1990's NHL with all of the best players in the world finally together in the NHL. That era to me is the best NHL HOCKEY ERA EVER. Second was the "original" 6 50's-67..play. Dan Sr. would be dead within two games'-seasons after this CANADA CUP.. This was his coup de grace.. I watched this CAN. The Canadian referee called weak penalties (two of which resulted in Canadian goals) on the Soviets while allowing the Canadians to do what ever they wanted at times. Canadian plays that deserved penalties were let go and, on several occasions, resulted in goals for Canada, including the winning goal.
