I love how people assumed I was just sitting on my ass doing nothing and decided to go to the movie late. Just to set the record straight in addition to prepping for four movie reviews on that evening's show, there was a problem with the site, causing it to freeze. If we were to have a show that evening - if we were to have a site, period - I had to get it fixed. That involved going between our developers, our streaming provider, and our server provider for hours trying to pinpoint the cause. All while trying to prep a show at the same time. Also called ahead to let people know I was arriving to the movie at the last minute. Even having been told I could come in late by the marketing rep, management kept me out for several minutes as I tried to tell them I was already cleared to come in. When you run a business by yourself these things happen. You have to fix last minute emergencies while juggling five other things. Or you lose money. In other words, don't assume the worst simply because it gives you something to throw shade at.

For me, the comparison between Don't Breathe and Blair Witch was; Don't Breathe started really good and got a lot worse. Blair Witch started really bad and got a lot better.
@3ShotTGK7 жыл бұрын
I have to agree. Blair Witch starts off slow and kind of throws unneeded stuff at you and two throwaway characters just go crazy midway, but the ending is where I'm clutching the seat and just anticipating the next move. Dont breathe, as good and as dark of a premise it was, unfortunately did nothing to make any characters likable plus by the end you're just going "yeah all of that was pointless." They took a dark crime thriller and tried to turn it into a revenge and sad tale which just ruined it.

I saw this movie bootleg and LET ME TELL YOU watching a shitty recorded version of this film COMPLETELY changed the viewing experience, it made the film so much better because the quality of the camera work matched what really made the first movie feel real. I love these guys. The videos are smart, funny and usually fair in the commentary/analysis from a serious/comedic perspective, which is very hard to do. I also deeply appreciate how everyone truly has their own individual opinion, as this video flawlessly showcases. HAVING SAID THAT, I think it's unacceptable that Korey pretends that we take the "real part" of the review seriously when not only he missed the first 20 minutes of the movie but also didn't make such a disclaimer himself. Instead, he got called out by Goodwin &Martin and I don't even know if Korey planned on telling us at all. He might be right that the movie is a shitty rehash (haven't seen it myself), but missing such a huge chunk of its runtime he cannot really have a fair opinion. The video itself was amazingly funny though, particularly when Martin & Goodwin threw the "but you're describing the first movie" jab at him and when the lights went out.

Their reasons for disagreeing are pretty stupid, though. It's fine if someone doesn't like the Blair Witch Project, but the reasons they give for backing it up are just dumb and ill-considered. "The characters have no motivation". That makes absolutely no sense. The characters are quite clearly going into the woods to try to determine whether or not the Blair Witch legend is true. This is no different than the hundreds of real people who have *really done this* in real life with various urban legends and myths.

Blair Witch 2 failed because of major studio interference. The violence and flashbacks were added in much to the anger of Joe Berlinger. Plus, he wanted to release his own director's cut of the film since then, but never got the chance.

Martin nailed the first film. Just nailed it. I remember 1999, getting caught up in the hype, going to see it and waiting for something to happen. Then waiting for anything to happen. I was 9 when the first one came out so I missed the hype. I remember hearing a little bit about it still at school. Every criticism Martin had for the first film, I would have felt the exact same. I hate shakey cam in horror films, I hate not being able to see what's going on. I don't like films that don't show the monster (even though IT was a disappointment to be honest). The fact that James would honestly think that Heather would still be alive after nearly 20 years was just too absurd to take seriously. And it completely contradicted the original many times, as it never stayed dark in the original, and the witch never blew tents in the air. And the whole “you can’t look at her or you’ll die” was never in the first film. And they had the audacity of showing the ending of the first film but they dubbed a loud growling sound that was obviously not in the original.

Interesting thing with the first movie is how much the director and some other crew seriously messed with the actors, like sneaking into their camp at night and messing with them and moving things around, they gave them the bare essentials of food and water to get more worn out and ragged performances from them.

The best spiritual successor of The Blair Witch Project is Marble Hornets :P I'm surprised nobody meantioned it here. It's a low-budget, "found footage" horror web series that captures the spookiness and mystery of the original even better than the original. And on a similar note, I'd give props to Tribe Twelve and EverymanHYBRID for doing a good job as well. As I see it, "found footage" has evolved into the ARG. An ARG adds an extra layer of creepy realism in today's world of smartphones and microblogs. Also, I'd just like to give some kudos to the three Blair Witch video games. Those were just as good as the original Resident Evils or even Silent Hill, but they don't appear so often in "Best Horror" lists unfortunately -- perhaps because they're difficult to get online nowadays, or maybe because they were difficult :P

The Blair Witch Project was a phenomenal movie at the time. That's coming from a person who went in without knowing anything about the marketing (too busy with college). I watched it with two of my college mates in our family vacation house which was at that time totally secluded and surrounded by woods. With that setting and not knowing what to expect, it scared the bejeebers out of us. Also I am kind of guy who usually likes the anticipation of horror in the movies more than the horror itself (think 'Signs') because my imagination is almost always better than what they end up presenting. If they had shown something, I am sure it would have been a let down for me. So the movie worked well for people like me.

Since it’s Halloween time and I’m about to revisit these movies here I am…I kinda fall in between Korey and Martin with this. Koreys right in that the actors in this kinda suck and don’t feel even close to being real people like in the original, and you can’t really buy into why they’d go out there after all these years. HOWEVER. I genuinely really like the Blair Witch lore and find it super creepy, so I really like the ways they tried expanding on that lore. Specifically with the witch’s abilities and control over the forest. Like how it was their own footage that led them out there, how it stayed night for over 24 hours, how Lane had clearly been in that house for YEARS while it was only one night for the rest of the group…all that stuff was great
@tazmon1225 жыл бұрын
there is a MAJOR difference between the original and this one. it wasn't JUST the greatest found footage movie ever made (nor the first). it's just a tight little film with great performances, the gimmick only enhances it. if a crew had the time, money, energy, and passion, the original could have an almost beat-for-beat remake replacing the found-footage gimmick with voyeuristic style long shots to represent the witch's POV, and it would hold up! Korey can do all the clowning around he wants, he can't deny that. i saw like 20min. of this 2016 one, before it really hit jump-scare central. it literally looked like the source material the beginning of Cabin In The Woods was satirizing.
@loriisgorey8 жыл бұрын
As a big fan of the original I was so excited to see this. I even got tickets to an advanced secret screening. The first hour was such a mess; cheap jumpscares every five minutes and poorly acted characters that you just didn't care about who made dumb decision after dumb decision and didn't need to be there. The ending was the same damn ending from the first one! There was nothing new about this movie, and only 30 minutes of semi- competent tension does not make up for the first two halves being so boring.

@chriswyble1438 жыл бұрын
I say YES. People bitch about nothing happening, but that's why fans of it (me definitely included) still count it as one of the most horrifying movies we've ever seen (and I'm 43, so it's not a "I was a kid, so..." kinda story). Watch it on a good home theater in total darkness and put yourself in the shoes of those 3 characters. I still remember the feeling when it ended and we walked out the theater, like an invisible hand that had been pushing down on my chest harder and harder, was finally lifting. If you need CGI ghosts doing circus tricks for you every so often (ala Paranormal Activity 1-whatever), don't waste your time, but if you understand atmosphere and the concept of the horror being scarier because your mind is being forced to meet it halfway, then you're in for an experience that will stick with you for a long time.

+Boyz N The Suburbs - I tend to flip-flop, but Lucio Fulci's City Of The Living Dead is probably the one that hits the top the most. If you want THICK atmosphere, Fulci's the man. I liked Ringu alot, too. I'm a sucker for the Japanese chain-curse movies, ever since Suicide Club. I think Takashi Miike put the cap on the subgenre with One Missed Call. It's basically his parody of those movies except he still made it scary AF.

I'm with Korey G and Martin on this one, saw it last night. Some of the sequences were incredibly tense, not knowing what you might see in the light of the frantic camera. I liked the early plot 'twist' and the first part of the house was intense, creepy and atmospheric. After that it felt like it was trying to top itself, but it didn't need to. I could see all the flaws and poor plot etc. Really, I noticed the point of view a Canon camera gave with ts 72mm lens, which went on to zoom... -_- . I sat there with a grin on my face, reveling in the atmosphere it created. Solid matinee.

It's strange that a movie that is bad still means a lot to me. Back when the first blair witch came out I went to see it with my best friend. He loved it. He enjoyed it. When he found out the guys who made the movie had plans for a sequel and prequel he was excited. He couldn't wait. then we got that turd Book of Shadows and he was bummed. we both felt it should have been it's own separate movie with no connection to the blair witch. for years and years he was always trying to find out if another would be made. every time they said they were going to do one, nothing ever happened. then in January 2016 he had asked me if I had heard any news, but I told him the last thing I had heard was that the creators had given up on it. then he got sick and in July he passed away. That very same day, Monday, the news came out that a certain trailer called The Woods had been played at some film festival and it was revealed to be the actual sequel. I couldn't believe it. The trailer was released the following day.

Korey complained about this being the same movie as the original. Yet that didn't stop him with Star Wars and Creed. Is horror where you draw the line?

From what I heard with the original Blair witch, They have the original actors basically go off the grid and made a missing persons website to make it authentic

Me personally, I'd give the movie High Matinee, with a touch of Full Price because i thoroughly enjoyed the original Blair Witch and thought it was good in the sense that you're not expecting whats going to happen next, especially leading up to the last 10 minutes. This one does the same thing, even though some of the characters really had no reason for being there, although its written why they're there, but by the end its a huge mind fuck and i felt like i was back to watching the original's ending for the first time and I loved that. It remembers its roots and the payoff definitely is worth it.

IT really bothers me when people have a weird superiority complex for not liking the Blair Witch Project. There is a dumb sentiment that somehow the more subdued elements of the film were understated because the creators simply couldn't think of anything to make a film a bout. That's just... stupid and ignorant. It's like feeling superior to someone who paid 30 bucks for a novel because you refuse to pay for buy any book that doesn't have pictures. I can understand people not liking the Blair Witch, but the superiority complex for not "falling for it" is just utter stupidity.
