Bit of trivia, in high school I was approached to join the "Blasters" when they were still coming together, I and my good friend Gary who played guitar also went to a house in Downey to jam, only my buddy and I ended up playing our Buck Owens songs for the parents. Since I our own group was gaining momentum, I decided to forego the invitation. Coincidence we played similar style country rock until we disbanded to get real jobs. We were Lynwood boys, William Tappan, Gary Magallanes, Mark Magallanes and Gerry Rioux. Unfortunately, recordings of our band have been lost to time except for a terrible mono recording of a beer bash we played at. I'm glad these guys are still jamming.

I'm sure you enjoyed the show. I've seen them play a few times. The first was with my mom and dad when i was seventeen. My dad's a big blasters fan and wad in attendance, record in hand. They went to get some hotdogs and soda and i was walking around. There on the side of the stage was Phil. And me being me i went up and introduced myself. 10 minutes later Phil is leaning on my shoulder telling... well, everything. We saw my folks looking for me and i called my dad over to introduce him to my new freind. He talked with us for the longest time. Let my dad drink from the band's keg. And then about 10 minutes before the show he ran off to get ready. He was so down to earth and total cool to hang out with.
@olafthe_viking84365 жыл бұрын
Me and my dad did a lot of roadie work and that (not even being on the job) was one of the coolest meets. Had a cool one with Marshall Tucker too. That one was on the job. And again with my dad. By the end of the night they wanted us to go on the road with them and do there set up exclusively. They had a set up that took an average of a couple of hoes. And we'd put them one for a day show them strike the stage so the fair could do their Arabian Nights play and then put them on for a night show. Me and my dad had them up and ready for sound check in 45 minutes. Blew them away.

That stop-time intro and outro on "Trouble Bound" at 27:44 has always made it my favorite Blasters song. Phil's voice is still one of the most distinctive in rock and roll history. He would have ruled rockabilly in the 1950s.

Of course they are. Without Phil they aren't the Blasters. One of the most unique voices in Rock and Roll. Turns every song he sings into a Blasters song. Dave is one of the best songwriters ever and grossly underappreciated. And a kick ass guitar player
@andyinoregon3 жыл бұрын
@@charlesottina7432 Totally agree. Dave Alvin is like Noel Gallagher of Oasis, a great guitarist and songwriter, but if his brother isn't singing those songs they aren't nearly as memorable.
@jdhook632 жыл бұрын
@@andyinoregon Totally disagree. Dave Alvin has recorded his version of many Blasters songs and I find that Dave's versions are always superior. There's something called "phrasing" that is used to describe the cadence of a good vocalist. Dave knows how to phrase a song verse that gives it "feeling". Phil uses no phrasing in his vocal delivery. It's one speed, one verse after the other with no pauses or modulation changes at the right time to make the lyrics expressive. Just listen to Dave's live album "Interstate City" to hear several Blaster songs in his live sets such as "So Long Baby Goodbye" kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6jZlIygpatnbMk or "Long White Cadillac" kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6vZYYKXqd6Mf6s that show how Dave's vocals and arrangements are more versatile than the same tempo that Phil always delivers. The best example of Dave's mastery of "phrasing" is his recorded version of the Blaster's song "Border Radio" kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnO3iqSrn913ebs which has a song flow that builds and ebbs and tides, allowing a person to really experience the story being told. That movement in the song is completely lost in Phil's delivery of the song when he performs it with the Blasters in his one-speed rockabilly style. And then there's Dave's superior guitar skills and his fantastic songwriting, as you have already mentioned...but I will pause now and step down from the soapbox. 😉
