In this video David shows us a great mixing trick called the "BlendFader", a very effective, easy to set up, routing trick to make your own automatic, level compensated fader for injecting any parallel processing aux into your mix without changing the level balance of an element, useful in so many cases like parallel kick and snare compression, parallel saturation on bass and vocals, distortion on synths and also for reverbs and delays.
No plugins required for this trick just a very creative routing matrix you can set up right now in your Pro Tools project!

This channel has taught me more useful every-day audio production tricks than what three years of full time education did. You are the goldmine that this industry really needs. I'm so glad I found you.

awesome trick for sure. Have you thought about how to apply this technique to a stereo track? Level matched stereo parallel buss would be really useful.

You might be able to reproduce this in other DAWs using phase inversion. 3 inputs: track 1, track 2, track 2 duplicated & phase inverted --> send all to your blend channel. track 2 will cancel out initially because of phase. then link the volume faders for track 1 and 2, do not link the phase inverted fader. As you pull down the fader for 1+2, you reduce the volume of track 1 and track 2 should become louder because less and less phase cancellation occurs. I'm not entirely sure if there's any artifacting from the phasing, I'm not able to try this out at the moment. Just a theoretical idea.

Actually, I though about it again and in this case you should link track 1 and track 2 inverted, so that the original track 2, which probably has some phase relation to track 1, gets blended in more and more. Otherwise there might be phasing issues between track 1 and the phase inverted track 2!

I really didn't know where you were going with that until I saw you move those pan knobs! Awesome trick. Not sure how to replicate this in Sonar X2. I don't think there is a pan swap knob on the channel strip. Could be wrong! I've never had to use it. :) Thanks for the great tip!

great video David (and great channel in general!) i use something similar on dual-miced guitar-cabs (fredman-style): record them to a stereo-channel, use SleepyTimesDSP "StereoChannel.vst" (freeware) as first insert, set the mid/side slider to mid so the l/r-channels get summed to mono. now you can morph between l/r-channels with the pan-slider of the plugin (which is pre-mid/side-slider). awesome workflow!

Awesome trick! Anyone have any ideas for using this in Reaper?
@Satnamtaro
@Satnamtaro 8 жыл бұрын
What BrooklynRagtag explained to us basically seems to work for Reaper as well! The key thing to make sure is to disable the Master send of the folder track. I'll jot my setting here. 1. Make a folder for two mono tracks panned hard left and right. (Make sure that the levels of these tracks are matched as demonstrated in the video) 2.Disable the master send of the parent folder track and send it to a newly created mono track at 0 decibel. 3.Switch the pan mode of the mono track that gets the signal from the folder track to Stereo pan and adjust the width to 0%. I think I got it right. I inserted a delay plugin on one of the hard panned mono tracks and as I adjust the pan, the delay slowly started mixing in. It would be great if other Reaper users can confirm that what I am doing is right:) There could be a better way!

I think you can just send a stereo track out a mono bus and then just use pan to make the mix how you want.
@BrooklynRagtag
@BrooklynRagtag 8 жыл бұрын
Actually...logic doesn't have independent pan controls on stereo tracks...kind of ridiculous. Also I tried the stereo track to mono thing and it doesn't work. Trying to find a workaround in logic for this great idea now, I'll keep you posted.
@BrooklynRagtag
@BrooklynRagtag 8 жыл бұрын
Figured it out for Logic. It's actually pretty simple. Take two mono tracks that you want to blend, or two mono buses. Pan them hard left and hard right. Send them to a stereo bus. Send that stereo bus to a mono bus. The pan on the stereo bus is now your dry/wet mix knob. Happy mixing!
@theklirrfaktor2906

+BrooklynRagtag It's much easier in Logic: Forget about the last mono bus. Put the Logic Gain Plugin in the stereo bus. Mono it and use "Input Balance" to morph between the sounds.

F#cking Gansta. I feel like I've been so close to doing this, without ever figuring it out. NOW, the question is, how to utilize this with Stereo tracks? I've got Pro Tools HD software only, so there may be a way with a quad channel feeding a stereo.
