This music makes me cry. It brings back ao many memories. I was 23 when this movie came out. . It was one of the reasons why I've spent almost every vacation in the Caribbean and the Tahiti islands swimming and snorkeling in the most beautiful waters in the world -and I still do it today and always will. I dreamed of living on an island and even though that never happened I have visited at least 200 tropical islands in my lifetime and I hope to visit another 200 in the future.

When I was 10, my babysitter took me to the movies to see this. Seems every time there was a scene that required eyes being covered, she happened to have left to get food or chat to someone outside the theater. The next day, she told my mom we went to see this move. My mom was wide-eyed that she'd take me to see this. However, I enjoyed this movie so very much...it was, even at that age, a dream...it was the source of many dreams and romantic thoughts. Hearing this music just makes my heart flutter!

One thing that always struck me about this movie was the mysterious natives that visited the other side of the Island.... the "boogymen" as Mr. Paddy calls them. We only catch glimpses of the rituals they were performing in honor of their god... and some of the gruesome aftermath - the blood trickling down out of the god's mouth. I imagine that they were sacrificing for the god in the hopes for bountiful food and progeny- they were sacrificing life for life. Meanwhile, Emeline and Richard were performing their own sort of fertility ritual over the years on the other side of the mountain. Only it wasn't a performance.... it was completely natural and pure.

In looking for soundtracks to make a favorite song list for myself, I have uncovered a few more that I really like, by artist that were unknown except for a piece of music here and there. I remember this movie, but back then I wasn't paying attention to the scores the way I do now. I hope when I get my list together , I can repeat some of the 2 min. pieces of great soundtracks to make them longer. A utuber finally came out with the whole 59 mins of the great mini series, North and South from 1981. I was delighted! I will continue to listen to the rest of this because it's "pretty" but doesn't grab me the way others have. Still worth listening to. If I can get enough energy, I am going to put what I have together. We will see what it turns out to be.

I always loved this music and the movie and thought of it as a beautiful and happy story because i never believed they wete dead at the end. But then i had a short period of time where i saw it all in a different light and thought more deeply about the realities of it all. It occurred to me abouthow sad and tragic it would be for 2 little kids to be left all by themselves on an isolated tropical island. I thought about how lonely they would be and how starved for parental love and affection. And then it dawned on me that they may be very unhappy under these circumstances and unable to fall in love or at least still be hurting a lot even if they could. All this hit me really hard and for a little while i couldnt feel anything but heartache for emeline and richard i then started crying and i couldmt stop for a few days. It was bizarre.

Good music always takes you to another place. He played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra if I remember correctly. It's similar in style to this with a bit of jazz "ala Frank Zappa" thrown in.
