I'm from the heart of Gen X, graduated high school in 1989. During those years I primarily listened to what was then known in the States as "College Rock". And yet, I can't recall ever hearing this song until today, when I caught it on a streaming 80's channel. How is this possible? What a song! One of those rare songs that sucks you in on the very first listen.

At 62, I realize now that singers in the 80s like The Blue Nile, Simple Minds, and others were the crooners of our generation, just like the Sinatras of my dad's generation. There were wonderful arrangements, orchestrations, and lyrics that spoke to our hearts.

I bought this EP (imported) in Berkeley, CA. It was 1984, and very few in the states had ever heard of, or by The Blue Nile. as soon as I got my grubby hands on the hot vinyl, i took it too the hifi stereo store were I was employed. Out of the wrapper, and straight on the platter. I dropped the needle on "Tinseltown in the Rain" at first all the employees (Music snobs all) stopped doing nothing, and began listening to that great opening riff as it churned (Plus the recording sounded fucking great. Man, the bottom was just amazing on those Big Boomers). But practiced indifference soon set in about a minute into the track, they began to turn their backs to the speakers (A universal display of rejection in stereo stores everywhere). But something funny was at work, because by the guitar break, i noticed out of the corner of my eyes, that bodies were moving in time. within a flash everyone in the store was dancing too that addictive beat...and digging it. Thanks Paul

Why did we ever come so far ? I knew I'd seen it all before Tall building reach up in vain Tinseltown is in the rain I know now love was so exciting Tinseltown in the rain Oh men and women Here we are, caught up in this big rhythm One day this love will all blow over Time for leaving the parade Is there a place in this city A place to always feel this way And hey, there's a red car in the fountain Tinseltown in the rain Oh men and women Here we are, caught up in this big rhythm Do I love you ? Yes I love you Will we always be happy go lucky ? Do I love you ? Yes I love you But it's easy come, and it's easy go All this talking is only bravado yeah Oh, Tinseltown Tinseltown in the rain Oh men and women Here we are, caught up in this big rhythm Tinseltown in the rain Oh men and women Here we are, caught up in this big rhythm Tinseltown is in the rain Tinseltown is in the rain Tinseltown is in the rain Tinseltown is in the rain Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah Do I love you ? Yes I love you Will we always be happy go lucky ? Do I love you ? Yes I love you But it's easy come, and it's easy go All this talking, talking is only bravado Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Tinseltown is in the rain Tinseltown is in the rain Tinseltown is in the rain Tinseltown is in the rain
