BUT THE BLUE ZONES?!? 🤦‍♂️ I discuss the Blue Zones in DETAIL in my book (out Feb 25th www.thecarnivor...) but in this snippet from yesterday’s podcast with @drterrywahls I discuss why they are little more than a fallacy. This is both cherrypicking at its best AND some “turning a blind” eye of Dan Buettner and his team to the SIGNIFICANT amounts of meat eaten in these locales (Sardinia, Ikaria, Nicoya, and Okinawa). There are MANY places in the world where people live to ripe old ages and ALSO eat large amounts of MEAT- like Hong Kong with its 85 year life expectancy and 1.5 pounds of meat eaten PER DAY average. The notion that people in “blue zones” eat plant based diets is pure 💩💩! What people DO in these regions is exercise, spend time with family, and finding meaning in their lives. They’ve also been shown to have clustering of variants in longevity genes (FOXO3,sirtiuns) in the case of Okinawans and New England centenarian communities. Furthermore, in Okinawa they LOVE PORK! Loma Linda a special case that I talk about later in this podcast and will post another snippet about tomorrow- but here’s the deal: consumption of fruits and vegetables there is associated with DECREASED FERTILITY IN MALES who demonstrate lower sperm counts and sluggish swimmers compared to meat eaters in that population. Makes you wonder what part of Loma Lindans is blue! 😆Check out the whole podcast (Fundamental Health) on iTunes and everywhere (including my KZbin channel). What do you guys think? Blue Zones: fact or fiction? Vegans, can we please put this silly fraudulent notion to rest?

I think the common trend among all these places where people are much healthier than the rest of the population is that they have little to no processed foods, low sugar, and sometimes low salt (Okinawa has too much salt and they are aware of that). They also don't drink a lot of sugary drinks. I think the bottom line is eat what mother nature provides and cook from scratch as often as possible.
@dude861
@dude861 Жыл бұрын
Yep, nobody could ever debate that. Besides, the "longest living populations" seem to be crowded in places, where there haven't been proper birth certificates. Okinawa is the best example, where hundreds of thousands of the centenarians where found to be missing (because they already died, but someone wanted to receive their pensions or whatever).

Great point. Even now people cannot recall the time that it used to be acceptable to say a plant based diet was unhealthy and bad for you. I used to be one of those guilty of doing so. The point most plant based advocates are trying to make is there are healthy populations eating 70 to 90 percent from plants hence it isn't unhealthy for somebody to do a 100 percent plant based diet. They conveniently ignore most vegans are following the life style for ethical and environmental reasons and many might even eat meat if grown in a lab. So the idea is in the interim, eating plants can keep you healthy whilst lowering emissions and not condoning factory farming etc. Not that animal protein itself is bad at any level, but best avoided in the circumstances today unless necessary

Dr. Saladino accuses others of cherry-picking, exaggerations and omissions. "Plant-based" doesn't mean _exclusively_ plants, but _predominantly_ plants. Beutner emphasizes that none of the Blue Zones are vegetarian, the most common meat being pork (but apparently you want to bury this fact for fear of being labeled politically incorrect, i.e. a "racist"). Everyone who has read on the subject knows that Okinawans traditionally do eat pork, but not as a stable; it's more of a condiment, their most popular food being the bitter melon (an alkaline food). In Ikaria, they do eat cheese and poultry and sheep, but again, much of their diet is vegetables kzbin.info/www/bejne/anyrgpmEZqaLsKc

I'm hearing your arguments and they may or may not be valid but where did you get your data from? The blue zones also focuses on centenarians. You brought up Hong Kong and Iceland but the populations of those 2 are significantly lower than the blue zones. I agree that there are other countries with an abnormal amount of centenarians like Uruguay, Spain, France, Puerto Rico, Cuba as well. its possible Buettner got some things wrong and some things right. That doesnt mean its all a complete fallacy however.

I think the one thing that is being misunderstood is that the health indices are actually declining with the transition to non-traditional diets. Most of the studies are studying the traditional diets and their benefits. Okinawa for example. The influx of the "Western diet" is completely changing the benefits of the more traditional diets. But the study has many important implications to the modern health.. 1-Family 2-Clean foods 3-movement 4-traditions 5 - Environment dictating health. I really don't see how these important facets of life need to be shelved away into non-importance. Derive from it what you find beneficial. One more important book on the shelf.

I'm Greek and this "Blue Zone" theory is crap. Icarians are known from the rest of Greece to shun hard work. That's one of the reasons they live long. For the rest, their habits are exactly like the rest of Greece save for those living in the large cities Athens, Salonika, Pirea, etc. They smoke, drink, eat meat, have their Greek boiled coffee, etc. What differentiates them from the Gringos is that they socialize more and eat in moderation as well as they grow their vegetables organically without having Mosanto on their backs.

Hi! I think it's possible that you didn't do enough research. In the cookbook, it says that a lot of these zones now look like a S.A.D., with copious amounts of meat, dairy, and processed foods. It's the diets of 60-100 years ago that centarians supposedly eat that are less of those items. The older generations aren't quick to rush into eating and trying new things so they continue with the diet they grew up with and know really well. Edit: if you have information that contradicts the above, then please let me know! I by no means follows this diet, just have the cookbook.

Well, there is ample research that shows that when we eat less and slow our metabolism, we also slow the aging process. This has me intrigued and I am currently searching to see if there is a connection.

The guy is almost certainly real as evidence by his knowledge and correct focus for his position. He reveals a LOT, too, including about diet. But he's clear that they believe blood type plays a role in diet, so if you aren't type A- and nutrient dense, their plan might not work as well for you. The families who have adopted European lifestyle habits, are sadly, more like us down ‘south’ with regard to the modern day health issues abounding (Type II, heart disease, dental carries, etc). For them to disregard the Arctic as a “Blue Zone” is a testimony to their leftist dogma. Sorry...had to say all of that. I actually would not watch the whole re-cap of the show due to its complete wolf pack mentality...the irony there, right? -Maybe vegetable consumption promotes aggression? Lol...In the end, I believe that this kind of attack mentality and self-righteous arrogance will eventually (and quite ironically), consume them.

The Inuits have a considerably shorter lifespan (10 increasing to 12 years shorter) than non indigenous i.e. the rest of the Canadian population. They suffer high respiratory cancer rates, accidental deaths and suicide (the later two obviously not diet based). The Research Paper I read though didn't actually say why they have such high cancer rates. I wonder if they have a high percentage that still smoke?? Quote: "In 1991, life expectancy in the Inuit-inhabited areas had been 10 years less than in Canada overall, with a wider gap for females (11 years) than for males(9 years) (Table 6). By 2001, the difference was more than 12 years, and the gap was similar for males and females. At 67 years in 2001, life expectancy in the Inuit-inhabited areas was about what life expectancy had been for all Canada in 1946." Can we consider that the dependance on animal based foods and plant based foods varied according to seasons and climates and geography? And that animal foods and plant based foods were rarely combined in the same meals, i.e. when meat was available we feasted on this nutrient rich food, and then toggled back to plant based foods? So what about a combined diet made up of 100% carnivore meals and 100% plant based meals, e.g. a couple of carnivore days followed by a couple of vegan days. It seems to me that many health issues arise when we abundantly mix carbs and fats in the same meals resulting in e.g. insulin resistance and all the ailments that follow.

Inaki Legorburu : The Principle of Proper Food Combining. This was a concept I read about that was part of Natural Hygiene in the book “Fit For Life” (I and II) by Harvey & Marilyn Diamond written in the 1980’s. In this concept though, you’re not supposed to combine protein and carbohydrates. Natural Hygiene has 3 basic principles, all pertaining to digestion. I still follow the principles and a lot of the information that was in their books. If you get a chance and you haven’t read them (and you can find the books) they are worth reading IMO. Diet, like everything else in this world, is a personal choice!

@@melodyengle7835 thanks for sharing. I still have one of their books in my bookcase ☺. What struck me from the food combining chart is that the protein foods, including nuts and olives, are mainly high fat foods. The more I learn about insulin resistance, the more I am inclined towards not combining fats with carbs, rather than protein with carbs, e.g. both grains and legumes are high in protein and carbs. To complicate matters, Ayurveda also has its own thoughts on food combining.

Inaki Legorburu : I got introduced to the Fit For Life books by my gym trainer/friend. She told me about them because I was having really bad stomach problems and I need to lose weight. Two birds one stone. Helped part of my problems and I lost 70 lbs. Still took years to find out I’m gluten intolerant (thought it was meat that was the problem). I don’t really post much but yours caught my eye and yes you maybe on to something with the fat combining with carbohydrates in certain foods. Because of GI problems I’m switching from KETO to CARNIVORES or KETOVOR haven’t decided which yet. I love asparagus, artichoke, and Brussels sprouts; everything else can go lol. Would like to know more about Ayurveda view on food combinations. By the name it sounds like it comes from India.

@@melodyengle7835 Ayurveda is indeed a traditional Indian approach to health and healing, but it really has not influenced these thoughts on food combining. To cut a long story short I switched from whole food plant based, to keto, to carnivore, and am now experimenting with my own advice 🙄 which is toggling between (a) zero carb carnivore meals and (b) meals with minimal (zero) fat (plant based but without the nuts and olives and oils and avocados, and including low fat animal products such as cottage cheese and butter milk). Carnivore has worked very well for me, and this modified approach now appears to work just as well. This hybrid approach will hopefully provide the flexibility to make it sustainable, because as much as I can enjoy eating meat, I love my veggies and fruits as well.

Inaki Legorburu : Looks like through experimentation you have found the path that works for you. I’m still trying to find what works best for me. I think that’s what this is all about, what works best for each one of us. Although there are some basic principles or guidelines people can go by. That’s were the books, theories, etc. come in. I’ve been at this since the 1980’s ( on a personal level) and it’s all trial and error.

I think your reasoning for discounting the studies in the Blue Zones is quite flawed. You said, specifically about Okinawans, that they eat (present-tense) more meat than most of Japan. While that may be true today, the study looks back almost 100 or more years to what what has been done from then to now. Okinawans today, largely, are not doing as well because of western influence. Nonetheless, aside from the SDA’s in Loma Linda, CA., meat has always been a part of a Blue Zones diet, just not the main course or go-to food. The use of the term “cherry picked” is also rather silly because he didn’t just pick them at random; these zones had to fix a certain criteria. Likewise, communities that have invited Buettner and crew to implement BZ methods have shown a positive change in improving mortality rates, lowering obesity, diabetes, and a whole host of other diseases that tend to lower health in people.
@vermontmike9800

This doctor bashing the blue zones is cherry picking himself. In previous books and TV interviews, Buettner does indeed show Okinawans eating pork, Sardinians eating sheep’s milk based precirono and Ikarians eating some lamb. Mormons are discouraged from eating beef heavy foods, so he’s wrong there. Even in VT, the seventh day adventists advertise vegetarian (not vegan) cooking classes and lifestyle.

What people eat now isn't the same that they were eating 40-60 years ago. It's difficult now to study this properly. Either way, we have other studies, and plenty of them, examining mediterranean diets vs. other diets.. we know for sure that eating plants isn't hurting your lifespan, and is probably extending it. There's no merit to the "plants are bad" argument. There's also no real merit to the "eat nothing but meat diet." I say this, because people are individuals with different needs.. one person eats meat only, and is in great health... another does that, and his ApoB levels shoot to the moon. there is no such thing as an "optimal" diet, unless you're talking about a sample of N=1.

Maybe people should eat according to the locus of their DNA. Mediterranean diet (sans meat) is appealing to me. I'm a French-Italian person (65%) and north African (Egypt, Somalia). I don't eat meat because (a) body parts gross me out and (b) too much reprehensible treatment of animals, especially by the disgusting Chinese who torture animals mercilessly (FACT!). To each their own. Only one go-round as the person you are now. Maybe in the next life you'll have a different outlook.

In Ikaria people used to follow the general Mediterranean diet. They used to eat meat YES but only 1 time per week and in festivals. It was grass fed lamb and goat. No pork no beef. Crete was famous for its high centeterian percentage among the general population ( you can do you own research about that ) and their diet was quite similar with Ikarians as well. Nowadays Cretans eat junk food, pork ,beef etc drink a terrible distilled spirit called "tsikoudia" or "raki" (old fellas used to drink only red wine in moderation) In the past Cretans were following an extreme fish-olive oil - plant based diet. The majority of the herbs and the plants that were used in their cousine are under extinction nowadays.(βρούβες,σταμναγκάθι,λαγουδόχορτο,αχατζίκι,κουτσουνάδες, μαντινάδες,ασκρόλυμποι and a lot more)
