No. No. You did it for me! Thanks so much for getting into research mode about this. I flagged The Ignobel thing a few weeks ago here. Very satisfying. It’s hard enough being an 80-year-old vegan with everyone taking lazy shots and being generally dismissive. I just visited my son and his family in Sweden. Folks were generally spooked at how fit and rational (!) I am. My next door neighbour has a Ph. D. And is 30 years younger than I am. He tells me straight up that he’s very impressed that I seem a lot younger than he would expect. I was a vegetarian for 50 years, then “graduated” to vegan about 6 years ago. Having said all that, I usually shut up and speak when spoken to because nobody likes a smartass.

I think I mentioned this recently in a comment on your channel. So I apologise for my then-ignorance! Back then, I found it convincing, of course now I don't! I never doubted the diet and lifestyle, and the channel on which I saw the interview with Saul Newman was of a doctor who is pro fruit, veg, fiber, exercise etc. so it wasn't an obvious "bash". Just goes to show how hard it is for us normal people to get a clear view. Now I have better data. At least I didn't hold that erroneous opinion for very long, and I never for a second considered changing my plant based whole food diet! But I'm sorry I did for long enough to make a stupid comment. One of my macrobiotic teachers, a Fulbright scholar who's lectured in 27 countries, visited the people of Vilcabamba some years ago. It's a place where there are a high proportion of centenarians. As he entered the town the sign on the road said - 'Vilcabamba - The Valley of Longevity". But he said he saw lots of young people in the township drinking coke and eating fast food. "The land of longevity will be short-lived", he lamented.

2001 Japan study, "The relationship of nutrient intakes to life expectancies in Japan since the Second World War has demonstrated that sufficient intakes of animal protein and fat are crucial for attaining longevity. In the community dwelling elderly, the higher the serum albumin was, the longer the further life expectancy in the elderly. Serum total cholesterol showed a U-shape relationship to further life expectancies in the elderly. Low serum cholesterol was deleterious for higher levels of functional capacity. Low serum cholesterol and low serum alpha-tochopherol accelerated depressive status in the community dwelling elderly."

@@StanDupp6371 Glancing at that study, it appears they looked at undernourished elderly people, feeding them meals with more calories, including more protein. Note that "protein" is NOT intrinsically from animals. Not quite grounds to say, "sufficient intakes of animal protein and fat are crucial for attaining longevity." :) Particularly when we see the neighboring Okinawans attaining unusual longevity eating a diet very LOW in fat and animal derived foods. (As MIc illustrated in this very video). As for low cholesterol, look up "cholesterol paradox". In a nutshell, higher mortality due to various maladies was a CAUSE of low cholesterol, not a result.

@@GarudaLegends In EU everyone eats everything in moderation mostly. Some balkan countries are more meat leaning but they do eat legumes and wheats since it is traditional. There isn't this crazy keto movement. If you have a specific issue, which is NOT common to most people (like not reacting well to veggies or legumes or cereals) then OF COURSE it is cruel to force something upon someone that can't sustain it or feel happy with it- but it goes sideways if you know what I mean.So the middle ground is not to hate on veganism promoting a healthier lifestyle, given how planned already it has to be- and I think vegans of plant aligned people won't be too in the face of people that eat meat of course. But keep in mind, some people just have their stomach turned upside down from the meat industry- I'm sure if you watch one of those torture clips, you'd feel the same. So it's really a difficult situation and a need for change.

Not eating veggie is like a rebellion against authority. But grow your own in the garden and you will discover a world of amazing flavors and textures.

@@aboutsuppliesStill doesn't describe causation. The other foods eaten with the rice matter a lot too. Each food mixed in totally changes the metabolic response in multiple ways. Rice is very close to sugar, metabolically, so it makes sense that it could be an issue. I heard about this blue zone debunk, and listened to Rebecca Watson get fooled by it. Even people who are capable of skeptical thought don't always practice skeptical thinking. What I noticed from the claim, was that they put all of their eggs in the basket of longevity. They didn't seem to address the lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, etc., among the people who live in blue zones - and who continue to eat the "blue zone diet." Here I mean centering their diets on plants, with the majority of calories coming from starchy plants, and even from single crops. At best, this blue zone debunking claim should make us somewhat skeptical about one issue - longevity. Whether or not you accept the longevity claims (which I mostly do accept), there is little doubt that those who maintain the plant-based diets of simple high fiber foods, and very little meat, have lower occurrence of the illnesses mentioned above, as well as all cause mortality. The inclusion of data from non-blue zone locations suggests a thumb on the scale to boost the numbers they are trying to show. It seems dishonest. Also, I didn't understand why they thought that poor people should face shorter lives than wealthy people. It is this exact change in diet as these people move from blue zone diets to western diets associated with greater wealth, that has caused the increases in illness and early mortality. In any case, blue zones are real, and starch-based diets that eschew animal products will increase general health, which will surely result in longer lifes.

There is no such thing as Blue Zones as it is a made up word by Dan Buettner, a man with no MD or Ph.D, and not a scientist with no credentials in any healthcare or medical field. Wikipedia says he is a storyteller. Santa Claus was also a storyteller. As a slick and clever businessman Buettner sold his Blue Zones LLC business to the Adventist religion money making business for 78 million dollars. The Blue Zones book is not accredited by anything as far as reliable information goes as it is an entertainment book. There are over 500,000 centenarians in the world right now that have not yet died from cancer or heart disease and less than one percent are in those so called Blue Zones so it is completely irrelevant to anything since it leaves out what the other 99% of long lived healthy centenarians do and zero of them consume the diet promoted in the Blue Zones book.

6:30 I’d also like to add that the western diet is not the only reason why Okinawans now eat less vegetables and sweet potatoes. Okinawa has an extremely cycling/pedestrian-unfriendly layout, and there’s few trains compared to other places in japan. That compound the problem. People hardly do any excercise and are becoming sedentary, so drive-thrus and fast food restaurants are the more convenient way to get food.

I don't know. I go to Japan twice a year and been to Okinawa quite a few times, and there are some old ass people there. It's not just their diet, though. It's their lifestyle. They're always in the middle of the malls doing their calisthenics and air golfing and stuff.

Is there any proof that "big meat" operates like big oil in terms of spreading misinformation and doubt? Would love to read a good article about this. Most of my friends that are influenced by these types of consparicies to go green will appreciate a good following of the money.

Isaiah 5:19-21 19 to those who say, “Let God hurry; let him hasten his work so we may see it. The plan of the Holy One of Israel- let it approach, let it come into view, so we may know it.” 20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.

You should make a trip to all the Blue zones. By the way people eat now, much fewer will aged over 80 yrs old. Like i said before have a look at the food in Costa Rica with diesel gas in melon, red spray glyphosate for bananas, etc.. not sure many will live very long

And what is the context of the above? Talking to a peoples partially ruled by a religious elite that were obsessed over rituals and ritual purity; things like washing your hands before meals, not eating pork and non fish sea food, having priests bless the food, etc. Meanwhile, many of these people were not treating their fellow humans all that well. So they didn't seem to understand that how you treat people and your intentions were more important than these material considerations as far as _spiritual/consciousness_ purity and growth were concerned. And considering so many people of the time didn't even treat their fellow humans that well, how would you expect them to listen to messages about being kind to animals! Yeah, not going to be a focus of a spiritual teacher 2000 years ago in those conditions, since you can barely get them to focus on treating each other well! With humans, you have to start with basics and then move your way up the ethics/consciousness truths. So just because a spiritual teacher from 2000 years ago didn't explicitly say, treat animals well, doesn't mean that it's not and never will be important. I mean, if you want to judge things from such a myopic viewpoint, well just a couple hundred years ago, you had religious, political, and other leaders who thought it was perfectly moral and acceptable to enslave black people. Don't most people think very differently now? Most people now think/feel that enslaving a fellow human is probably one of the worst evils one can engage in. Context, and an understanding of the peoples and conditions of the times, is everything. Learn to think more holistically, critically, and logically. And if you don't believe me, you can directly ask Yeshua yourself if he thinks things like factory farming are spiritually positive and healthy practices.

Oh, this is going to be an interesting watch as soon as I have some more time & energy to really get into it. I watched a podcast episode with a data scientist who claims that it's all a fraud and I found at least the pension fraud argument quite convincing. What I missed in the conversation was some more information about Loma Linda, California though.

great video. Here te opinion of Chat GPT and your video: "Opinion on the study: Although Newman raises valid concerns about certain global data, his analysis appears to generalize anomalies from specific regions (such as conflict-ridden countries) to all Blue Zones, which is not methodologically sound. Independent investigations have validated records in Okinawa and Sardinia, two key Blue Zones. Therefore, I agree with Mic’s view that Newman exaggerates local issues to discredit areas with robust verification and scientifically backed healthy behaviors. In summary, the study's criticisms have merit but do not entirely invalidate the conclusions about the healthy habits in these regions."

We are so very very different individuals. Northern Alaska natives ate very few veggies for thousands of years and survived well. Other natives ate almost or completely just veggies and did well, but generally they got a lot of sunlight and exercise, not lazy couch potatoes that probably skew the results a lot. There are a lot of birth certificate cheats.

@@ΘάνατοςΧορτοφάγος "Finally, Dr Newman debunked the popular idea of ‘Blue Zones’ as regions of exceptional longevity and healthy lifestyles. Many, if not most of the centenarians in the ‘Blue Zone’ have turned out to be alive in the government records but were deceased in reality. Using extensive government data and surveys, Dr Newman showed that most of the dietary and lifestyle claims behind the so-called ‘Blue Zone’ regions of high longevity are not supported by any independent data. For example, despite vegetables and sweet potatoes being promoted as key components of the Okinawan ‘Blue Zone’ diets, according to the Japanese government, Okinawans eat the least vegetables and sweet potatoes in Japan and have the highest body mass index."
