CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Looking for a shortcut, Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) drives him and Jake (John Belushi) through a shopping mall, demolishing everything with cops on their tail.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Expanding on their Saturday Night Live characters, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star as Jake and Elwood Blues, two white boys with black soul. Sporting cool shades and look-alike suits, Jake and Elwood are dispatched on a "mission from God" by their former teacher, Sister Mary Stigmata (Kathleen Freeman). Said mission is to raise $5000 to save an orphanage. In the course of their zany adventures, the Blues Brothers run afoul of neo-Nazi Henry Gibson, perform the theme from Rawhide before the most unruly bar crowd in written history, and lay waste to hundreds of cars on the streets and freeways of Chicago. In case you aren't swept up in the infectuous nuttiness of the brothers Blue, you might have fun spotting film's legion of guest stars, including James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Candy, Carrie Fisher, Steve Lawrence, Twiggy, Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman), Frank Oz, and Steven Spielberg.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1980)
Cast: Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Armand Cerami, Steven Williams
Director: John Landis
Producers: Bernie Brillstein, George Folsey Jr., David Sosna, Robert K. Weiss
Screenwriters: Dan Aykroyd, John Landis

The most beautiful aspect of this scene? Every store whose name you see in this mall was a sponsor for the film, paid for the privilege of being plugged in this chase scene, and actually paid EXTRA to have their store destroyed on set. **Tear rolls down cheek.** I...I need a moment...

+tnerb tnerb The mall closed in 1978. The Blues Brothers movie was the last view of the store before it became abandoned and left to the elements. That's why they were allowed to destroy it. Everything smashed in the mall was not a prop, it was real mall furniture that was allowed to be wrecked.

I love how Jake and Elwood are constantly at each other's throats while driving through the mall parking lot, but when they're in the mall, they forget about their silly fight and just casually talk about everything they see inside as they're driving past. It's like as if they're window shopping, not even in a car chase at all!

+1400deadwood They get stopped in Park Ridge (expensive area) and the mall was in Harvey (not such a great place to go). They're quite a ways apart, as the Chicago area is enormous. There are states and whole countries not as big as Chicago and it's surrounding areas. The mall was called Dixie Square and can be seen online under deadmalls.com. It was open only 15 years, and the area went very much downhill. Murders and rapes took place ON they property. On the last day, all their own employees ransacked and looted the entire mall. The place was closed almost 2 years before the movie. Watch frame by frame to see how shallow these fake stores are. You can also see people cordoned off in one part. the drum set that falls over is a Ludwig Vistalite like Bonham, Karen Carpenter and Keith Moon had. Btw, all three had the same drum set, were drummers, and all died at 33. Wait, Karen died in Feb and her birthday is March 2, almost 33... So there was no Toys R Us in that mall, ever. The guy who asks about Miss Piggy is the stunt director. There were way more independent stores then, which was most of what was in the mall minus the big anchors. Note Coleman grills was never in the real mall. Jewels was. John Landis was to pay the poor city 90k to trash the wing of the mall, parts of which were still being used for a school. He paid them NOTHING. Not sure where they got the 90,000 cars from, but I know they were pretty much all brand new: "Don't touch the cars!" So, there was more stores NOT wanting to be associated with the film than in it. Bigsby and Karuthers, high-end men's clothing, where men's pants cost 500.00 in 1990 was never in the mall. I think Mike Jordan advertised for them in commercials.

If you look into the background at 0:03 you can actually see that they provided not just a Toys “R” Us neon sign, but a Dr. G. Raffe era Geoffrey neon sign. Line delivered by Steven Williams, whose later role was the Captain of the ''21 Jump Street" crew on early, early Fox TV. Speaking of TV, Jerry Orbach of "Law and Order" shows very early in "The Blues Brothers," as the guard who escorts Jake from the cellblocks to the property room (Frank Oz as property clerk) and says to Jake: "well...this is it!" as he unlocks the door. It's a sequence that, sadly, doesn't survive most TV time edits-iit is on the VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray and digital downloads.

RIP Duck Dunn, May 13, 2012 My GF is much higher class than me. She only knew about classical music until I showed her this movie, and she became a fan! I wired her stereo with the big woofers into a DVD player, put on this movie, and had a blast. The sound track is great, the bass line by Duck on "Time is Tight/Don't Turn Me Loose" is classic. I'm gonna watch the movie again, in memory of Duck.

True. Even more interesting is that after the shoot ended, the mall remained in its destroyed condition for decades. There were numerous plans to demolish it but they all fell through. It was finally demolished in 2012 - 32 years after the movie was released. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Square_Mall

The sad thing about this was that this was the last time Dixie Square Mall was ever used. If you look at the mall before it was abandoned, it has one of the best interiors I've ever seen. Bright Sun Films did a video on the mall and really does their best to cover every aspect possible of the mall.
@AEMoreira81

A part was used for a school at the same time and not part of the film set. But after 1981, it was abandoned for good. There was a plan to reuse the old Montgomery Ward space, but then it was accidentally partially demolished, ending that possibility. In 2012, the mall was finally demolished. The site remains vacant.
