CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Evading the cops, Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) cause a pile-up of dozens of cop cars.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Expanding on their Saturday Night Live characters, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star as Jake and Elwood Blues, two white boys with black soul. Sporting cool shades and look-alike suits, Jake and Elwood are dispatched on a "mission from God" by their former teacher, Sister Mary Stigmata (Kathleen Freeman). Said mission is to raise $5000 to save an orphanage. In the course of their zany adventures, the Blues Brothers run afoul of neo-Nazi Henry Gibson, perform the theme from Rawhide before the most unruly bar crowd in written history, and lay waste to hundreds of cars on the streets and freeways of Chicago. In case you aren't swept up in the infectuous nuttiness of the brothers Blue, you might have fun spotting film's legion of guest stars, including James Brown, Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Candy, Carrie Fisher, Steve Lawrence, Twiggy, Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman), Frank Oz, and Steven Spielberg.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1980)
Cast: Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi
Director: John Landis
Producers: Bernie Brillstein, George Folsey Jr., David Sosna, Robert K. Weiss
Screenwriters: Dan Aykroyd, John Landis

@Mark Booket Not really. I have pics of a 75 LTD Wagon that got a tree in the front end of the _roof_ after ripping through the hood. The driver was drunk as hell and somehow he survived (this belongs in Ripley's Believe It or Not,) the tree missed him by inches; he fell through the floor (which was ripped out) and his boot was jammed between the frame and tree. If you're wondering "How did it go through the engine block?" It didn't; the car hit the tree starting at the driver-side headlight, and he must have been turning slightly right, because the tree then hit the engine block and ripped the engine off the mounts, twisting the frame, and then finally ending about where the transmission was. The driver, again ridiculously drunk, was probably pinned against the door momentarily before falling through the floor with his right foot stuck between the car frame and tree.

1:55 Filmmakers actually got permission to drive down Lake -- between trestles supporting the L, no less -- at more than 100 mph. After Landis shot the sequence he realized it looked as if he simply speeded up the film. So he reshot it with stunt pedestrians on the sidewalks so viewers could tell the drivers were, indeed, going that fast.

Just a different era for comedy movies. IMO, at least for non animated comedy films, the art of the gag has more or less been lost. Roughly 3 minutes of a huge car chase at 100MPH+ speeds in Chicago in old wobbly cars from 40 years ago and the entire scene has, effectively, 2 lines of dialogue. Only 1 moment of the scene tries to be hilariously funny, and its the big pile up at the end. But they let the entire scene build up to it. There are some humorous parts of the scene. the picasso line, the few little pile ups, jumping over the police car and shattering the lights, the few "Oh shit" looks as the roar between the bikers and 110 MPH. All of it and they didnt try to force it to be funny. They built suspense and they give you a feeling of "Oh how the fuck are they gonna get out of this one". Even in a movie with so much ridiculousness they just let this pan out somewhat calmly, and the payoff is insane. Compare that to a comedy movie today, the dialogue would be all over the place, there would be a shit ton of jump fucks, and thered be a ridiculous sound track. The zingers they put in wouldnt even be creative. Just some form of expletive or another. Compare that to a ridiculous part of this movie, and what is the one liner/zinger you get? "Disco pants and haircuts". That little bit of subtlety goes a long way IMO, and it shows in a lot of the great comedy movies and moments over the years. Airplane, blazing saddles, spaceballs are all other examples of movies that, while they included their fair share of immature slapstick humor, a good chunk of the laughs came from creative joke telling. Turning a not funny scene into a funny one not by what said, but by what happens on screen.

00:49 At Monroe, the Bluesmobile races up an exit ramp and vaults a squad car in what Landis called his "favorite stunt.'' Landis wanted the driver to take out the Mars lights on top of the police car, but the driver could only guarantee he could clear the cop car. But after Belushi and Aykroyd each offered him $1,000 ($3,200 each adjusted for inflation), his car ended up launching over the police car AND clipping BOTH Mars lights in one take.

@101Volts
@101Volts 7 жыл бұрын
@John Gait No, it was a pre-emission car or so they said. I thought cars in America started getting catalytic converters for the 1974 model year (which that Dodge was, a '74) but maybe it wasn't the same for all manufacturers. Cars in America do have reputation for being low on power though, I've heard it's to keep them lasting longer. EDIT: 1975 models are the ones that first got Catalytic Converters.

At 1:51, IMDb says when they shot under the elevated train line, the city of Chicago gave them two passes to shoot that sequence very early on a Sunday morning. Once for the stunt driving wide shots where they legit hit 120mph and then again with pedestrians added and narrowly missing other vehicles. Landis said it was his finest moment in planning and execution.

Although this one of the most comical car chases of cinema, it really does reveal how awesome Elwood is at driving, as well as a striking contrast between genuinely good stunt driving and how the filmmakers were trying to parody car chases of the time... 0:35 Compensating for the Dodge's massive weight shift after the slalom, perhaps a bit too much? 0:50 A little help from God 1:20 Elwood makes it through the next turn at this speed and the cops don't because he moves to the outside lane and then cuts over the median to get the best apex for that corner 2:20 The only thing Elwood couldn't avoid before having to turn

Well, they've switched to CGI and you don't have a lot of lawsuits on your hands to worry about. It still pisses me off to this day, but the 1980s though was the realistic version of GTA 5 if not better. I've read L.A.'s history back in the '80s and there was a LOT and I mean A LOT of DRUG ABUSE and jackoffs in the streets. Also, police brutality was a thing back then and they've attacked different minority groups. Other than all of the negative things, life in L.A. was pretty normal and awesome at the same time. This is usually one of the causes why I wanna re-live the 1980's for myself and experience it.
