They were the two frontmen who assembled the best R&B band in the World! The best original players. You can’t go wrong with Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Matt Guitar Murphy! And it sounded incredible! The Blues Brothers may have started as a comedy bit but the band was the real thing!

That whole band was so stacked with top of the line players, you couldn't put together a better band to go on the road with if you life depended on it. John Belushi really pulled that show out of his ass and hit the world at the right time for that music to come back, but to get the original guys that recorded many of those songs was just amazing and can never happen again. Now you need to find computer software from the 90's to put together an original old band. Those players were so good and so humble. They had to be, just look who they were on stage with, each player was about the best in the world at what they did. It was truly an all star band that played together so well. Studio players are like that. What a tight band that was and no wonder. I wore that album out in the summer of 1979 and that music takes me back to that year every time. Love it.

I agree with everything, of course, but I always thought that The Blues Brothers was more Aykroyd's brainchild? He was the one that listened to Soul, Blues, Rhythm & Blues etc and introduced it to Belushi along with the pitch, so he was also probably the one in charge of getting the cream of the crop musicians. Belushi was mostly into Heavy Rock before Aykroyd played him some of his albums. My source for this is Dan himself from the awesome first DVD release featurette.

I think folks should send out thanks to Jeff Nemerovski that this video and audio exist. As an executive in radio advertising he apparently knew Bill Graham well. Graham had big plans for the closing as he had staged many concerts there, even more after closing Filmore West somewhere around 1971. Bill loved the room but couldn't interest the landlords in investing in myriad repairs needed to keep it open. So for a appropriate closing he pulled out his trump card which was requesting The Grateful Dead to do the honors. I'm not really clear on how The Blues Brothers became the warm-up act (others please elucidate) but, it probably at least had something to do with the mad reception they had earlier received three months earlier at The L.A. Amphitheater when they opened for Steve Martin. A better match may not have been possible as this was a kind of hugely unexpected REAL party band with the chops to get any event started in fine form. Back to Jeff Nemerovski...Bill told him he could have sold more tickets to this show than any he had ever staged which inspired Jeff. He made arrangements for the show to be broadcast (and taped) and it was shown on WQED (local PBS) and simulcast in stereo on KSAN radio. Now Bill was known to tape shows but this tipped it up a big notch as often Bill's early videos were in black and white and not always in the best sound quality. This one survives in pretty fine form for what is mostly been traded in bootlegs in the past. I know The Grateful Dead have actually done a release of this on DVD (not seen it unfortunately in it's released form) so there must be the potential for even better video and audio that this KZbin release??? Let's hope The Blues Brother's full concert resurfaces sometime in a more pristine form if possible, but this stuff rocks and I think when watching it how bad the current musical landscape has become in large part. Real blues musicians practicing their craft and knocking it out of the park with the help of two very talented men in black suits. Love it! Thanks for posting it cause it was easier than digging out my old DVD a guy from Sweden sent me years ago (kudos to nice folks like him).

The “Blues Brothers” originated on SNL in the late 70s and because Akroyd and Belushi were such huge fans of old school blues tunes they formed a touring band. The films references to “getting the band back together” are a direct connection to this touring act.

@@robertclarke8014 (It's AYKROYD) Actually it was a collection of random events that put the band on the road in a movie. First they did a show on SNL as the BB's. ( using the SNL Band with Paul, Bones, Blue Lou, and Mr. Fabulous Al Ruben) Michael Klenfner/Atlantic saw the show and offered them a single record deal. Then Steve Martin asked them to open his Amphitheater shows and they decided to record the live Atlantic /Briefcase record there. While all this was happening they assembled the "band". They all were/are top musicians long off the road) The movie was entirely different. After Belushi called Dan at his farm to tell him of all the interest in a record. Dan and I started working on a premise of taking the band on the road like all musicians. When we told Atlantic and Brillstein of the idea they bought it...we jumped in a car went to St.Louis and drove into Illinois looking for some of Jakes references, Calumet, empty malls and lift bridges. that's history now.

@@rongwynne3824 Hello Mr Gwynne from Sunny Australia, I notice you are able to name some of the band members....I wonder if you would be able to name the entire ensemble and which instrument they played...I realise this is a bit of a task, but I feel sure others would benefit from your knowledge also....and yes, like other commentors here, I did not know this happened before the movie....it is utterly fantastic.!!!!
