What do you think? Is the BMW i8 slow? Why or why not?
@katanaboyer

I own the 2016 BMW i8, it is definitely NOT slow. However, I do consider it underpowered for the way it is styled or Looks. I wish that BMW used a 4 cylinder turbo instead of a 3 cylinder. That being said, many people consider it a supercar, and probably expect sub 3 seconds from 0-60 from it, without doing research on actual numbers like you have done. I live in Fayetteville Georgia and many have tried to challenge me at the lights. In closing, I have not lost off the line or on the highway (pedal to the metal), to anyone yet since owning the i8 for over 1 year now. In fact, many guys who have tried to race me get smoked, and its a rewarding feeling knowing that I did not buy a slow car! To all the Mustang's, Camaro's, Challenger's, other BMW's and Mercedes I have left behind in Fayetteville, I want to say nice try! Stock 2016 BMW i8, 0-60 in 3.8 to 4.2.....

@@katanaboyer Awesome! Glad to hear that you are definitely enjoying the i8 and you reinforce fact that it is not slow. That is true. I also with we had the 4 cyl turbo engine. However, I think we got lucky with this as they originally planned to put a 3 cyl diesel in it. Imagine that! Lol! I think another thing that disappoints me with this car is that I fit in with the exotic car crowd, but that means I'm typically hanging around with folks with much faster cars. If I cruise with the vehicles of Savage Garage, I feel extremely underpowered with the lights of a Turbo 911, Urus or Aventador SVJ on my butt. 😂

Pat's Garage Online it’s slow for a “new” $100k plus car. Yes im not a moron i know you can easily pick a used one up for high 50’s, low 60’s. For its depreciated price its a fair amount of power but should be no where near a 6 figure sticker when you compare all the better cars you can get for that money.

To be fair, given that other manufacturers have made hybrid “supercars” similar to the i8 with better performance, it’s not too farfetched to say. The EQS, Model S, E-tron GT, and Porsche Taycans all have better stats across the board for similar pricing. Even the E-ray (I know it mentioning more recent vehicles but the points still stands)

I had a Lexus LC500 before I bought my 2019 i8. I heard that it is a beautiful car and very high-tech. I also heard and read that it is slow. Which didn't make any sense because the car spec said otherwise. The first time I drove it, the dealer was sitting next to me, and I noticed he was looking for something to hold on to, so I didn't push it, but after I bought the car, I did push it. This car is fast, I would say as fast as my v8 lc500. It has the same issues as other BMWs, like not being as stable as semi-race cars like LC500 at high speed, but it certainly is not slow. Pat, I think one reason that so people think it is slow is because it is much quieter than the V8 gas engine. When I reached 122mph in my Lexus, there was no doubt that you were going fast.

So happy to see this video. I really like the i8 and hope to own one in the near future because it checks so many boxes for me so this comparison of performance to other cars is just icing on the cake. A lot of the cars you mentioned cost less but few of them are mid-engined, coupled to a carbon tub and their engines are double or triple in size. I am not upset because one of the cars you classified slow (2009 M3) sits in my garage but I am jealous.

Most people don't "get" the i8 at all Pat. I think this is helpful, you could enhance it with the MPG of the cars on your list to point people to the real difference here. Those cars have similar performance but will in day to day driving get close to 5 times the fuel consumption and CO2 emmissions. Even if some petrolheads don't care about that metric, that's what the i8 is about with its 215 wheels, etc.

I agree. And, as I learn more about this car I can see the #1 focus of BMW was gas mileage and #2 was sound. The car has a visually appealing aesthetic but without considering those 2 points, and to your point, as well, they just don't understand. Thanks for the comment.

@@hazardeur All I can say is you must be some driver to make an i8 feel wobbly on the public roads - the exercise we did was using some EVO Magazine staffers and pro drivers (incl British Touring Car Champ 2007 and Porsche Supercup champ 2005) on the Magazine's fav local road the B645/660 in the UK.... both pro-drivers said their felt safer, more enjoyable and faster to do the 25.6 miles in the i8 than the 2wd 911 - they were both nearly a minute quicker too. In totally dry road and hot conditions the 911 would be more at home and more rapid than i8 as it could deploy the power better. The second gen i8 has through significant front axle redesign and camber and toe-in changes had nearly all the understeer dialled out (so the tyres bite hard) that the first one had too btw, if you drove the first version. Another good factor though nothing to do with driving is now out of production for a year all i8 values are on the rise too - all low mileage well loved and FSH cars will be over $100,000 in decade, whilst their traditional competion of R8/911 (unless special editions) will be worth about 40-45% of list due to supply outstripping demand.

Yes, I was loosing on the REAL straights (sure, 600hp beats me i8), but DRIVING in MOUNTAINS - the i8 was a brutal match. Thanks to you and your videos I mounted the rear wing and the blades under the front parechoc. I personally think that when people say this car is slow, they mean slow for the money. If youre paying 6 digits msrp for a car brand new then yeah compared to other cars in that price bracket it is slow, at least in comparison to the car you used as an example, the C7. Which can be had for half the price. The i8 depreciated so much though that you can pick up a used one for 60-70k which brings it closer to the price of a corvette.Outright performance numbers are not the point of this car though and the car fills a niche of the market right now not being addressed by other brands. The cost of the R&D of it is also considerably more than that of a vette. Pat though, I've not seen anyone in the car space here on youtube drag so many cars, and do it so well. lol hats off to you sir, keep enjoying the car!

Thank you, David! I love your response and agree. Looking to the future, the depreciation curve may flatten completely and then go up. I bet the people who say their slow probably don't own a high performance car or are jealous or they get to caught up on the fact its 1.5 engine powering the car. hardly say its slow. It might not be as fast as it looks but I'm sure when you put your foot down you feel it and secondly why does it matter how fast it is once it puts a smile on your face when you drive it and you enjoy it that's all that matters.

I plan on getting one of these when I get back from my deployment! But I lean on both sides of this. I personally think it’s fast, but the problem is, unless anyone else knows different, it will be very hard/expensive to make it any faster. All I’ve seen is a tune and exhaust out there for it that might get you to 400hp. Where corvettes, camaros, and mustangs have strong aftermarket support for performance upgrades that will make them a lot faster. I’m a wrench head, I put a duramax in a Chevy Avalanche, and a turbocharged snowmobile engine in a RZR. The fact that I may not be able to do much to the I8 may drive me nuts. But heck, with those performance numbers, and the fuel economy at those numbers....I may be able to overlook that hahaha. And that’s one thing all those cars can’t touch, is the i8’s fuel economy! Great channel by the way!
@PatsGarageOnline
@PatsGarageOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You know what you're doing with a wrench, that's for sure! I also miss mods as I did a lot of those to my C5 Corvette. But, the minor mods that we can do may not be represented correctly on the dyno. Those who have done a tune have higher HP and Torque numbers but not much of a change in 60-100 times, for example. According to those in the know, the car is tuned as well as they could tune it and still keep longevity. If you are looking to make major mods, Edo Popken is the trend setter right now. He had his hands in the i8ProCar in Europe and is currently testing new heads, cam, bigger turbo and intercooler. He's also done a carbon ceramic brake rotor/pad swap with success. I value my i8 a bit too much to do major mods but with high mileage i8's showing up on CarGuru's in the high $40k price range, they're appealing for someone looking to make these mods. @@PatsGarageOnline I also often forget that the i8 is in a class of its own when it comes to style. Many people automatically think of it as a supercar due to its unique design, but I agree with you, that it is a sports car that was originally designed as a concept. I also agree with the sound issues on the i8 and have thought about doing some modification to it. The only issue is that my vehicle is still under the factory warranty and if I decide to modify the exhaust for better sound and performance, it will void the factory warranty. I look forward to seeing your video on your exhaust mod. I have looked around extensively and I really like the look of the 3D design exhaust/sound. They also make a custom carbon fiber rear defuser that goes with the exhaust and it looks insane! My only other gripe about the vehicle is the short battery life, 20 mile range is not much at all in todays E-Car market. I wish BMW will come up with a new battery that we can just swap out to get more miles on a full charge. Overall, I have not been disappointed with my vehicle. I did however upgrade the wheels to 22" BM14 Savini wheels, and it changed the look of the car, making it look even more like a supercar. If you drive a lot at night get a Lazer lighted one as STD lights are only adequate. Any car from 14-17 is fine if it's had its belts $1200 done at 4 yrs, and the fuel sensor on flap is fixed and the coolant issues are also fixed - otherwise they are bulletproof investment! @@MrRandomTwat The later coupe drives better (no understeer and 30 miles electric) buy on price not spec though - in UK facelifted 18 coupes can be had with low miles for £65,000 so about $83,000 - the roadster mind is only £8k more and I drive mine through winter as it's quiet and hood is so well made you forget it's a roadster - tbh all i8s will be good news in just 4-5 more years and they'll all be well over $100,000 within 7-8 yrs. The car is definitely the next M1, Z8, CSL, SLS (which I also have) if kept under 50,000 miles and main dealer history is retained and car is 100% stock. Budget $2500-3000 a year maintenance though after year 4 warranty for A/c coolant ancillary issues - but you'll save that in fuel and insurance over say a R8 or 911 and that will depreciate on a long term downward curve (bottoming after 10-12 years) unless halo version like touring or gt3/rs . Ps Values in Germany of all i8s have gone up 15-20% in 2020 alone...other countries will follow! On pure investment criteria alone I suspect the Roadster will be twice the price of a coupe in 20 yrs as circa only 3,000 made versus 30,000 coupes and it keeps the doors and practicality of coupe unlike say SLS ROADSTER.

@@paulthorpe766 Thanks for the feedback! I guess I have to think my finances through... the investment side of the roadster is definitely a huge plus but when I look on bmw.de (certified pre-owned) or mobile.de, they do go for a pretty big premium even now. And an i8 for me is already a borderline stupid purchase, the only reasonable excuse of buying a 100k car in my situation, would probably be the fact that it will most likely hold it's price better than for example a regular 50-60k premium brand car which is a more reasonable price for a car considering my salary. I don't live paycheck-to-paycheck so occasional few thousand euro bills are not a huge concern but wouldn't want them to be regular. The big appeal of an i8 for me is the fact that I could own a pretty exotic car with decent fuel economy and hopefully not too bad insurance rates (haven't asked for a quote yet). I don't have any kids so the limited storage is not an issue either.

I think something pretty major that folks overlook is, lol something very impressive, and that is, those numbers, even with or especially without the electric motor, ummm, folks that's a straight 3....just three cylinders!!! And 4.4 secs to 60 back in 2015 without having to go into hypercar country, I think it's impressive, and this was a demonstration as to what BMW could do during a time when we really didn't have a lot of hybrid, not at all like we have today in choices in cars, and none looked as sweet as this. They all looked like frogs that had been stepped on, or shaped like a kids chewable vitamin. At one time the top limit a car could go was 30 mph!!! Lol can you dig it man!? So, a glimpse of the future is what BMW did here and gave use pretty much what the concept car looked like and considering this was doing those numbers back then and even today 4 secs to 60, isn't bad at all, and definitely isn't slow, and out of a 3 cylinder gas engine, I don't care about the .4 of a second, lol that's so fast no one is counting that. Anyway people who say this is slow, THEY are slow. Thumbs up. Lol it's faster than walking which a lot of the kids in this generation are doing unless rich Mommy or Daddy are handing out their rides. It's a very cool example from BMW. And I'm glad you don't try to be in your 20s with it nor deck it out like a 17 year old who got a 100 dollar AutoZone gift card and shopped in the sticker section with fake plastic peddles, racing decals go home slap all that on to add that 30 more horses to tune up that car and call themselves a "mechanic". Thumbs up!

I have a ‘14 i8 and instruct thru PCA in a Porsche GT3. I’ll suggest that the i8 is consistently easy to drive fast. One other thing that people don't take into consideration is it's handling, especially when you ditch the standard Bridgestones (which in my opinion are poor) and replace them with pilot sport 4s. The i8 can out handle the majority of cars out there Inc supercars and it does it with ease. And I have owned and driven a lot of fast cars. Like you say it looks like a supercar so people expect to see 600hp up, but its very capable with what it has. Trust me, this culture about point at that saying that is "slow" comes from the non sense comparation of just compare only that point of a car, for example, people say: an R8 cost similar but is faster. Yeah, but you just don´t but the speed, you buy a whole product, and the value of each car that each person perceive depends of all of it, that include the look, performance, comfort, tech items on the car, etc. If you only care about speed, maybe you should look for a Tesla and tune it, but sure you´ll like other things too. So, for that, even care about why the people say those things, is already non sense.

Interesting video. Personally I think if the internet warriors are calling the i8 slow it's only because they are focused on the motor. They probably don't know much about the car other than the fact that it has a turbocharged 3 cylinder motor out of the Mini Cooper. They equate number of cylinders with power. They also don't take into account the electric motor up front. The internet is filled with a lot of uninformed boy racers.

Well Pat, maybe you should be drinking a Slo Gin Fizz, since the I8 is soooo slow. 🍸 And then when you pull up next to another slow I8, you put down your window and say, "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?" 🤣 Now, when we met in Carlisle, if you had told me, which maybe you did, that the I8 only only had 357HP, I would have said "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining."🤦‍♂️ But as I remember, while you were tutoring me about the I8, I just wanted to know about the car, the whole car, especially all the electronics in that I was overwhelmed by it and still am. Now, I like numbers, but the numbers the manufacturers put out, like 0 to 60mph times are NOT obtainable by most of us. I'll let you research because I forget, but my C6 GS is supposed to do 0 to 60 in approx. 4.4 seconds. Yeah, right. I've got 430hp stock and weigh about 3,400lbs without me in it. I tried maybe four of five times before I tweaked the hp and not once did I even get close. Anyway, the I8 has 93 less hp than I do and you weigh how much more? The I8 shouldn't even be as fast as it is IMO. So my long-winded aforementioned comment to you and others, is why would anyone say the I8 is slow. For that matter, why would anyone even say my antique GS is slow? It can and still does, blow the lint of my navel and that's pretty much all that matters. The one aspect of your I8 that works against you and other I8 owners is the damn thing LOOKS just too good AND fast. Whatever "fast" is these days. Save the Wave.🙋‍♂️🗽

Hi Peter! Slo Gin Fizz was my go-to for many years, as I wasn't keen on alcohol that didn't have some sweetness to it. It would be the perfect combination for the slow i8 (when I'm not driving). 😂 We save the grey mustard stuff for the Rolls inhabitants around here like Randy Savage. You are right, yourr C6 GS shows 4.4sec and low 13's in tests, which is very appropriate for the upgrades that were made after the C5. The C7 was also an incremental upgrade so it all lines up. The i8 is also 3400lb but with 2 motors (one electric, the other gas turbo), it is also AWD and has less driveline loss to the wheels, also has launch control for increased performance, and faster shifts with a dual clutch transmission. So, those are definitely factors that influence the i8 compared to other platforms. It can do more with less HP. It's not the 700HP+ beast that a lot of people think it should be based on looks. However, Edo Popken is working on improved heads, cams, turbo and intercooler to get it into the 500's. I have no idea how it will perform, then, but I'm sure it will costs in the 10's of thousands to get it there. Too rich for me with a BMW (Broke My Wallet)!

During the creation of my above Epistle, I forgot the weight of the I8 and was a heavy baby at probably 4,300lbs. Obviously my dyslexia was at work as you state it 3,400lbs. This is just another area where the I8 has been so well thought out and engineered through the use of all the composite materials used. But the I8 does come at a cost. So, the only "It's soooooo . . . " statement I can make is that it's soooo expensive. Interesting about what your friend Edo Popken is doing. (What a great name.🤤) I think you should splurge on his performance package when it becomes available. That way you can boast that you have the Fastest "Slow" I8 in the country AND it's been accomplished only a 153 more hp!👍 I just noticed that since my earlier comment you pierced the 300 subscriber mark. Here's to you, Jin-Jin and cheers. I'll dust off a bottle of my Grandmother's Bathtub 90 year old Gin and bring it to Carlisle for you. It'll be my performance upgrade to you so that you can have the fastest Slo Gin Fiz in the country. Enjoy your weekend. In about another 12 hours I'll be enjoying mine. I'm already back in the deep freeze , currently at 16 degrees and will then be receiving more snow to compliment the cold. 🤦‍♂️ Gotta go. I think the big difference is as you said: the performance lasts a few seconds whereas the cars you're comparing against can maintain that performance over and over. Also, most of the cars you're comparing to aren't tuned for 0-60, whereas the i8 is, due to the electric motor. I still think it's a beautiful car, but given the price tag (starting at $150k) you'd expect a bit better. BMW prioritized efficiency over power, which is fine, but people spending $150k+ on a car don't always care about gas mileage, if you know what I mean.

It’s respectable if it’s an inline 3 (1.5 L) hybrid with 354 hp and about 400 Nm of torque!

why do Pat and Rich Rebuilds think speed is defined by 0-60 and quarter mile? Cars of this ilk need to be fast around a closed course. The i8 has skinny tires. It doesn't corner like a supercar. It is slow.

I went with 30mm wider tires and it substantially increased grip. Edo Popken of Edo Motorsport is tracking his i8 and at Bilster Berg in Germany and got a 1:49 lap time. The GT2RS has the record of 1:42 on the same track. fb.watch/2Qe5Q5S20L/

@@PatsGarageOnline that just means someone else had to pay sticker price but still thats a really steep price tag for a car that has to fake exhaust noises and that low of top speed. Like the novelty is nice but for how copy and paste the interior is to other bmws I personally wouldnt like it

I got sick of being called slow so I bought a 2017 Acura NSX. Now, people are telling me that car is slow. I ran a 10.88 in a quarter with the Dragy but apparently that's not fast enough either. Top fuel here I come! 🤣

My used 540 dinan 5 will go from wow to holy mother of Jesus without a speaker in the exhaust! You can talk up the new digital cars but in the end there is nothing and I mean nothing as complete as a light mid sized sedan with a standard transmission and rear wheel drive(or at least the option of 2 wd).the ev are just bad assed ( face it)but they are not yet ready for prime time.3cyls and a nine volt for a 150,000 technical 🌙 nightmare.number one rule when owning a bmw....well my rule one anyway is....don't let it get hot.....if you must shut it off don't hesitate....turn it off.these i8 are prone to getting hot 🔥everything is maxed out and it will run like wind this is true.but don't get it hot. So are all cars ,I've had many Bmw s and I love them .I 've owned e30,e46 ,e39,e90,e92....among those were 2 m cars.sometimes size matters.a 6 cyl with turbo or turbos is not a replacement for a v8...I disagree with Bmw for using 4 & 6 cyls to replace a bigger natural aspirated motor...the bearings can't take it and the heat will destroy all around it. To me fun is not the i8,it's the m5......slower and bigger m5.I no future is ev.

With an i8 every horsepower gets to the road via torque vectoring (4s Porsche 911 turbo only other car that can deploy power on the road so well. Even my 2014 RS6 threw away power through front axle under heavy throttle). Thus in the real world on wet twisty uk b roads i8 will leave anything other than say an Audi RS3/A45 AMG - by comparison I have a 710bhp SL 65 that can only put down about 250-300bhp on the road, it is useless in wet and on b roads - as the rest of bhp escapes in steam from road or in tyre smoke! i8 is fast enough and is super light and stiff chassis and very low centre of gravity = result of very fast progress

Dude i8 is plenty fast. Its easy for these kids when they just read spec sheet. They should try beating it with their actual car (not their friends or mom's car) first then they can say whatever they want.

That's so true. Lots of folks have never driven something as fast as an i8. I'm not one to crap on anyone's cars. I went from a dailying my 2007 Sport Trac, to my Dodge Dart to the i8. But, I'd never tell the owners of those other vehicles how slow they were. People are -nuts- brave sometimes. 😂

because it is..... 4.5 seconds versus even a base Corvette C7 stingray at 3.7 seconds. That's why sales sucks. Bmw i8 doesn't even sound good with its fake speaker in the exhaust and piping in through the car's speakers.

My best 0-60 on all season tires on public roads with a stock i8 was 4.3sec using Dragy. No slouch but not neck breaking. It doesn't compare to the experience I've had in other cars, Corvette included. And, it doesn't sound as good and never can with a 3cyl, that's for sure. However, I wonder why you say sales suck. I try to check out the condition of the i8's I see going up for sale in my area and they're on the lots about 2-3 weeks before they move. There are about 7,000 i8's in the US in total and it looks like it's bottoming out in depreciation. That said, it's a great deal for someone who wants something different. But, I still miss a Corvette.

Well said! Funny how people say it’s slow but haven’t actually driven one lol. Great iconic cars aren’t all about 0-60 time are they. It certainly isn’t slow as my previous cars include M4, Jag XKR v8 & Impreza WR1 all with similar performance. As you say, I think it’s because it has supercar looks and similar original price tag but super sports performance of cheaper cars? Good value now though!

Because it's fake engine sound coming from external speakers drained your batteries and wallet. You think your fast but you just wasted your money simply because when you take a real look at the price range it is the slowest bottom of the list. Your paying more than a skyline gtr and it has less interior room. Too much futuristic SHOW with mediocre GO
