I have a 2002 LT. HID + LED's. Fuel line disconnect changed after mine broke. I love my seat (stock). Put on a back rest. Huge help for long trips. Metzler Marathons. Radio sucks. Removed the cd changer for more luggage room. I've dumped mine 2x. No big deal. Rides on rails at 30+ mph. It does ride tall but I love the handling. I usually ride 2-up so I make my passenger help me get it up on center stand. When no passenger I take rear case off and I have a really nice rack I put back there. Saves about 25 lbs. I put the largest windshield I could find on it (z-technik) and have absolutely no wind buffeting. Brake lines replaced (they will leak eventually). Brakes are awesome on this bike. Thanks for the post.

+1 for changing brake lines! The original lines on my 02 deteriorated inside and bits of rubber blocked the banjo bolt to the caliper. Front right caliper locked up and put me on the street, breaking my collarbone.

Proud owner of an 01 K1200LT. I agree with everything in this video...the pros...the cons. You will be amazed how in such a short time, you do not notice the weight, and how awesome it handles. I also own a VMAX, but my Toscana Green K1200LT is my ride of choice. It gives you everything you want in a street bike.

Thank you for the videos. I just picked up a 99, with 166,000 on it. My neighbor gave it to me do to health issues. I just sold my Ultra and hated the air cooled engine. I have had mostly Honda's since my 16th B-day back in 1986, and am looking forward to driving the LT. I have changed every fluid in the bike and taken out the radio from your videos. As soon as I figure out how to donate I will try to reciprocate.

I agree 100% with the "must do" items mentioned. I wish I had watched this earlier in my ownership experience. The brake lines exploded, the front headlight is worthless, and the stock suspension sucks. I have fixed all of that. I still want to put a better sound system in, and the center stand remains a problem. The bike is so heavy, my center stand bent at one point. It still works, but I scrape it constantly in the twisties, or with two up. Great long distance tourer, but is a wrestling match in town.

Very, very helpful video. I was looking at a used 2005 model with 31K miles. The owner had a list of upgrades/improvements that nearly matched all the items you mentioned (plus ZTechNik windscreen). He's asking for the "book" retail value. After seeing your presentation, I feel good about giving it to him. Thank for your advice.

AGREED. I am seriously shopping for a reliable, lightly used cruiser of Teutonic descent. Just scratched the K series off my list, and now focused (again) on the R series...probably the R1200 RT. The video is absolutely priceless, and belies a deep knowledge, and true understanding of the machine in its most dynamic iteration. I believe Kirk could deliver a lecture in differential calculus so that even an idiot like me could understand it. Bravo!

Good video. My fuel line connectors broke, I replaced the headlight with an HID as well. I also had problem with my rear disc, my radio died, and the latch on my top case broke. I replaced my radio with a marine unit and it works well. I bought a bag to go on top of my top case. My rear view mirrors are terrible and drop off if I hit a bit pothole, but the previous owner may have damaged those. I've put on 45K in four years.

I have had a 2006 goldwing, two V4 Yamaha Royal stars (Would have bought another if they fuel injected that v4), and a few others, this bike performs flawlessly on the freeway at cruise speed of 65-85mph. The electric center stand I love, and the electrically adjustable windshield too. Yeah, I miss the power of the goldwing, both turn into beasts at less than 5mph. The gold wing windshield made me a bobble head, thats why I sold it, it also had a weird shimmy at a certain freeway speed around 60mph, this bike is more fun than a gold wing. This is an awesome channel btw!

Some of the things are surprising. I am just buying my 2nd LT, a 2005 model. Had a 2002 LT-C (new) for 5 years on which I put about 36000 miles. I loved the stereo. The seat was fine, I had to keep it in the high position for touring. Never had a problem putting it on the center stand even though I am quite light weight.

First time I've seen this review and even though it is several yearsold, you addressed some issues I had wondered about, very informative! I have been riding a 2008, GL1800 for about 3 years now with zero problems (82,000 miles). I did consider the LT before I bought the wing and I still think about buying one (or maybe a GT) as a second bike but the reliability & maintenance requirements turn me off. They are great looking machines and I like to do my own maintenance but I think they may have more issues than I am willing to deal with especially considering how trouble free my Goldwing has been.....

Love my 2000 bought in 2011 with 37k miles in Florida! Selling it this week with 55k miles and I’ll miss her yet I’m now primarily enjoying western NC riding where it’s not uncommon to encounter 100’s of twists and turns on a day ride and thus I’m switching over to a lighter 2017 GS 800. It’s definitely been the best cycle I’ve ever owned with 40 years of riding and owning many bikes. Suggest all hydraulic lines be replaced and upgraded to braided metal for bikes over ten years old, and make sure to change out all oils in gearbox, drive train, forks and engine every 5 years or 10k miles. I’ve heard about clutch and ABS issues yet never had any problems. If you have an opportunity to acquire a pre owned one it’s a GREAT bike and BUY! Enjoy!!

Kirk, Thank you so much for this now old video it is very comprehensive. As a BMW fan which just sold out a 11RT year 2000 with 136000km I must say that the LT will be definitely the next one! My previous bike was as new when I sold it (last week)! Sure I had to change some parts like final drive bearing´s and re-wiring the hall effect sensor among other little things but... I had lots of fun with it all the time :D As for the Lt I think that I can handle all the upcoming attention and work on it. Cheers

i replaced my goldwing with a K1200lt and despite a bearing replacement have now racked up almost 100K and still going. its a great ride, like having a sporty wing.. like all bikes, they all have individual character.

i sold my 1999 with 100KM , great bike. replaced it with a R1150RT. Also a great bike, lighter and more maneuverable. the LT is a top heavy bike bike but other than that a very nice ride. I replaced 1 rear bearing but other than that i just serviced and rode it.

Great video A whole lot of reasons NOT to buy the K1200 LT. Needless to say I am now even more happy with my 1982 Honda CBX 1000 It has the same power but with 'only' 272 kg dry weight it performs a lot better. And I replaced the clutch in about an hour...

Hi Kirk ! I bought a 2008 two months ago...as my first bike since I took my driving license in 1986. This is my "4 months too early 50 th birthday gift" 😄. My LT is only 33.800 km "old" and yes , I've dropped my LT both to the left and to the right = lesson learned. I've driven the bike on the Go Cart track and on a race track to learn to handle the LT better. Rescently I met the first owners and they were very happy to see the LT again ! I bought the innerbags from them , because the previous owner I bought the bike from wasn't interested to have them , " it would be cheaper with the blue IKEA bags" 😳. Hey Kirk Im actually purchasing a 2009 LT with 15000 miles regular maint has been performed at BMW. At this point should I continue to only go too BMW for its regular maint? ie changing out drive oil / oil & filter ? As far all the other issues tires shocks clutch that intimidates me a little. I also wanted to ask is there a particular place you can recommend that sells BMW after market parts and accessories ???? thanks Next thing Im going to do is see if I can find a BMW Motorad club here in Atlanta area

Kirk, Thank you very much for this video. I was leaning towards BMW but, after watching your very comprehensive video, decided to go with the Goldwing. I had one before, for three years, and did absolutely nothing other than changing oil. Every time I had it inspected by a dealer, the "verdict" was always the same: nothing to be done. Honda seems to be a safer choice. Thanks again...

-The maintenance is like any bike. The more you use it the more you will have to do. Learn to do it yourself and save huge bucks. -Light is huge and its a must to be change out. HID 55w Kit. -Speedo is fast by 5 mph to 10 mph its off. (really just knowing helps). -Brake Lines should be changed every 50K miles or 10 years. -Final Drive oil change every 5k miles. -Other maintenance is due so buy a book to help. I had a new 2007 version of this bike which came with 2 headlights & the electric center stand. That was my second LT with first being a 1990.The motorcycle is lovely every bit. I don't know about the one in this review but the one I had had the most comfortable seat on a motorcycle I'd ever sat on. In fact I took it for a 2 week long ride doing about 10 hours a day very comfortably. The audio system was great with the exception of the CD player. It skipped & after having replaced it under warranty it kept doing it. The horn did a great job of making you visible & the second light added was a good improvement. Sorry to say but the GW's front shield held no candle to this bike's electronically adjustable screen. In conclusion I'd say it was a terrific motorcycle & my only discomfort with it was the weight + I wished it delivered more power given it was a 1200!

CRAZY PROBLEM maybe you JOHN have answer ! ... the Speedo jumps up/down or goes to 0 for a bit OVER 48mph - ok below that speed ?! - and now the ELECTRIC CENTER STAND is also erratic - works when it wants to - no fluid leaks - only 25k miles - I get the flashing yellow light and blinking idiot light on dash with downward lightning bolt .. ideas ? bike runs GREAT -could it be a fuse? it was painted so they took off faring - maybe a connection ? -I check the battery cables -all tight - pushed in all the fuses - are the stand and speedo on same bus fuseline ? your ideas - help APPRECIATED ;) - I LOVE YOUR REVIEWS JOHN - BEEN WATCHING THEM FOR YEARS ! - INFORMATIVE - ENTERTAINING - LEARNING A LOT

An excellent video sir! Sure wish I happened upon this video before I bought my 2003 bike a few months back. Admittedly I was enamoured by the sleek design. Truth be told, I feel kinda spooked in keeping it. I’m not a big mechanical guy so I may be better off with another kind of bike. I think I will sell my bike now. It is fun to ride, and, as you said, it’s absolutely top-heavy. Whoaaa! I fell over once making a slow corner in a parking lot. Kinda embarrassing. Very well-done, informative vedio... Thanks for posting it... I'm 5'7"/190lbs with a 29" inseam - IE: Too small for this bike... I did test ride one at Bob's BMW, about 7 years ago, and did manage to drop it leaving the property... Figured out pretty quickly that although I really liked the bike, it wasn't the model for me... I currently have a '98 R1100R 75th year Anniversary model with 28K miles on it that I LOVE.... it FITS me Question please - do you have a vid for this model...? I enjoy your honest assessment of the truth.. (I'm 67 now and prefer - although I know what tools look like and how they feel - to exchange $ for maintenance). I think I have narrowed my choices down to the BMW K1200 LT or 1800 Goldwing, with the Kawasaki Concourse being a distant third choice. I have a lot to think about, as I am not good with tools.

Great video, I was seriously thinking of purchasing a 2006 LT, and I’m so glad I didn’t purchase now knowing the drive shaft has serious issues. Same with the brake lines. You think BMW would have a superior product, but I have a friend who wines a BMW car that he got rid of because so many issues with it. Just must the nature of the beast.

Hi, new k1200lt owner. First TY as your repair vids are TOP NOTCH!! second .. my clutch is bad. I baby her as she slips after 4500 rpm. If you could explain how to use the round adjustment know on clutch lever a little maybe it could help me make this last till late fall when I can take this dang thing apart ! That knob is only for the length of pull on the clutch. It does nothing for the adjustment you are after. You need a clutch and rear main service.

I have a 2005 love the seat hate the radio 2nd one went last year. Dropped it a half a dozen times, but I love the bike. Test rode a GLT really nice but $23,000 and my bike. It really wasn't spectacular enough.

Have a 1999. Have changed the shocks to Öhlins. Break lines been changed. Will change the quick connect. Rewired the throttle. Clutch replaced. Have 75000 miles on it. So time for a second soon. That will be a one week work. HID lights on it. Plus two extra LED lights. I also have a GS so the LT I only use the LT for long distance. It is pretty terrible in many ways. Thinking about trading it in for the new RT and probably spend a ton of money on that too.

I know they look great with all that swoopty looking "Tupperware", but if you're really considering a used classic BMW bike, and I highly recommend them (been driving BMW's for over 30 years), there are other models out there, that can make ownership and long distance touring much more enjoyable. As well as not having such a high cost of maintenance and repair. Look at the R series bikes for instance. Anything from the R1100 up through the earliest R1200's. The boxer engine is a great low RPM revving engine. Low RPM's = lower fuel consumption. The K series engines run at a higher RPM and therefore don't sip fuel as gently. The R series engines are much easier to work on yourself if something breaks or needs replacing. If you absolutely positively feel you must have a K series bike, then look at the K1600's. On the used market, the earlier ones can be had for a great deal less money than you might think. But if possible, try and buy it from an "old guy" like me. The amount of pull the big 6 cylinder has is intense!! Younger guys "tend" to really enjoy that crazy horsepower and torque. But be aware, that the k1600, being a K series engine is going to prefer running at a higher RPM while cruising, and therefore drink like a 21 year old on their birthday... Well maybe not that much ;) 160 horsepower... do you really need it? Especially in the US? No. Not really. Is it fun? Oh hell yeah! But the bike weighs more than the R1200RT and at 125 hp and 92 ft lbs torque, it's nothing to sneeze at. Especially on the lighter platform. Here in Germany, that is what I ride now. 2016 R1200RT and I can tell you, I can run the autobahn without much worry of being in anyone's way! I'm returning to the US in a couple of weeks, and waiting for me is a brand new 2020 R1250RT. Now we've bumped up the horsepower to 136 and torque to 105. Still with the lighter frame and lower RPM's cruising than the K1600. Just as much comfort and amenities as the K1600, but easier to move around at low speeds in parking lots etc. But if I still haven't made my case, and you are determined to get a K1600, bypass the K1600B and the K1600B Grand America. While they really look completely badass! And they really do, with that lower sloped back end, they are not so comfortable. Besides having the body work sloped back, they also have lowered the rear end by using a shorter coil over shock than the GT or GTL models. The bumps are much sharper on your spine. They simply don't have the suspension travel that the GT and GTL has. Yes you can soften up the suspension, I know. I rented one recently to make a decision on whether I was going to buy the new RT when I got back home, or step up to a B Grand America. My wife and I rode from Stuttgart south over Stelvio and while the trip was just as scenic and beautiful as it always was, we did have to stop more frequently to get off and stretch and give our butts and backs a break. It was quite clear that the choice came down to the GTL or the RT at that point. I have had many years of success with the R series, and so eventually I chose the new RT. However, that K1600 engine is simply WOW!! So test it for yourself. But it will cost you more in fuel and more in insurance. Also the cost of services and maintenance at my local shops in the US said it was higher on the K vs the R. One shop said "tremendously so". Whether or not he was blowing smoke up my southern end or not, or what his definition of tremendous is, I don't know. But the R series have been around for a very long time, and they seem to have that thing figured out pretty well. Ok off my soapbox. Keep the wheels down and on the pavement guys... unless you're on a GS ;). Bob in Germany

Yes. The suspension springs. The old ones are most likely worn out. Change them for a new riding experience

Any idea … 2000 1200lt. Ignition won’t turn with key stuck in lock position had to disco battery as lights won’t shut off . Is this an alarm thing?

Thanks for the video. I just bought a 2001 LT and this is just the advice I was looking for. One thing you didn't mention is how many miles we can expect from the engine. I currently have a 1999 K1200RS that I bought with 2K miles and everyone said it would give me trouble. After 2 years and 15K miles, no problems. The '01 LT I am buying has 47K. I've always heard they go forever, I am hoping this is true.

Went to look at a nice 2005 bike When I came I saw the bike was dropped on both sides, clutch has been replaced at 22,000 miles for $3,000… for desert as the guy started the bike it started spewing fuel on to the ground… bummer but also lucky me 😁

Holy crap! I can't disagree more about the windshield. Bought my '07 LT in Nashville and rode it back to California. The entire state of Arkansas was rain! Mr. Numbnuts (me) expected everyone to have California weather in the summer and so I wore a mesh jacket, jeans, running shoes and a beanie helmet. Not a speck of rain hit me... none! My shoes were dry, my face was dry and my body was dry. This included passing semis at 90, when they were doing 75, and you know what kind of water they kick up. Later, when I replaced the stock windscreen with a great looking VStream, it did let my face get wet when riding in rain. All this of course was a revelation compared to the Gold Wing I once rented, which left me SOAKED after riding about 80 miles in rain. Nothing has ever kept me drier in the rain (while moving of course), except a car. The price you pay for all that great frontal aerodynamics however, is that side winds want to push you off the road. You have a lot of plastic facing those side winds. Dry weight on my 2007 was 780 with the fancy hydraulic centerstand, older ones are 760.. Fully fueled about 60+ pounds more. Where did you get over 900? This bike is lighter than a Gold Wing and lighter than an Ultra Glide. That being said, the weight is carried high... THAT is why it feels very heavy at very low speeds. Particularly when starting or stopping, you darn well better have that bike vertical. It is also pretty thick between the legs, so if you don't have a 30+ inch inseam, forget it. Tires: I used Bridgestone BT020s and later BT023s, with no problems at all. They handled great and didn't wear any worse than my sport touring bikes. I agree about the too soft suspension. Even when new, it couldn't accommodate slightly spirited two-up riding. Agree about the headlight; also changed mine to HID. The seat is different for everyone. I did a few thousand mile days on the bike and like any other bike, I would get off the bike and stretch for gas, food or drink, at least every 200 miles or so. My wife loved the passenger seat. The first long ride I ever took her on was over 500 miles, on the first day. Afterwards she got off and said, "that was more comfortable than a car". Proof that everyone's rear is different. I would definitely try the stock seats before laying out four or five hundred on a custom seat. Great handling, smooth, nice fuel consumption, great protection.

+tibor t The worst rain storm I ever got caught in (a frog-choker in LT-speak) was so brutal I could barely see the car in front of me at 65mph - that's how fast traffic was going. But the bike felt completely secure which made no sense - I figured something was amiss. So I looked down at the road and saw about 4 inches of water. It then made even less sense. I debated getting off the freeway and waiting it out but it was so bad, I thought that would just prolong the agony. So I kept going in those conditions for another hour. The entire time the bike handled and responded like it was a sunny day in San Diego. Amazingly safe. The side winds in Nevada kept trying to blow me off the road. I felt like a big sail on the highway. But when the gusts hit you, the bike wavers for a split second as it tries to correct itself. Unnerving but once you get to expect it to happen, not a worry. The seat is high off the ground but there is a low seat available. I had mine custom rebuilt but I still am not all-day comfortable on it. I get a hot spot at about the 2 hours mark. The odd thing is, if I can make it to the end of a tank, the 5 minutes break at the gas station is all my butt needs to go another tankfull. And I'm tankfull for that ;--) OTOH, my GF rides on the back and says it's more comfortable than her car! When I was getting the seat done I asked if she wanted it softer or firmer and she said "Do not change the seat at all!" So unbeknownst to her, I just had it re-covered. Same feel, nice leather. I did change out the rear spring with one from Works Performance. I got a coupon at a motorcycle show and it was a great deal. It's perfect for what I like. A strange thing happened on the way home from Works. I had to pick it up in the car as you take if off the bike and get it to them, they use the core. So I drove it up there. I picked up the shock and left their offices and one block away I crossed over railroad tracks. An hour later a train crashed on that exact spot! If you remember, it was the guy who was texting conductor stuff to train enthusiasts. I wondered how the folks at Works Performance got home that day. Fuel consumption is 45mph. I dropped the bike twice in the first few months. Both times I was going slow and turning and I grabbed the front brake. WRONG!. I purchased the Jerry "Motorman" DVD and learned how to ride it. Since then, I practiced a lot and learned to never use the front brake under about 10mph. No problems in the 5 years since. Twice I've gone camping with 2 up. Forget it. The second time, we were thousands of miles from home and I packed the camping gear at a post office and sent it all back home. I've now learned; camping is fine for one up (I've done that a bunch of times) but for 2 up, it's hotels only. Once I sent the gear home the bike became ridable. Mind you, I had the tent and sleeping pads strapped to the top box behind the GF. I love this bike but it was NO FUN riding with that much stuff! I do maintenance precisely when needed. I do everything I can personally. I can take the "tupperware" (fairings) off in just over 30 minutes and about the same to put it back on. I've now done it about 12 times. I recognize the screws and where they go. The first time probably took me close to 2 hours. I've done about five 2,000-3,000 mile trips, all though twisties, hardly ever any straight drives. Whenever I have the bike apart, the GF complains we can't go riding. She wants to ride it more than me! Finally, this is a sporty Gold Wing. This thing handles so well for its weight it's incomprehensible. And I can't ride it as well as some of the folks in the videos on here. The Wing is great for straight, interstate miles, but I've been through some of the toughest twisties in America and this thing handles great. I got back from one of the long trips and mentioned it on pashnit.com and the general response was "you cannot take that bike on that road." I had no problem but I guess ignorance is bliss!

I know this is an old post but... I think maybe you need to ride a Goldwing as they actually handle very well through the twisties. I've passed many a sport bike on my GL1800 both on the flats and thru the twisties. Plenty of power and a low COG make them very capable road machines.....

Don't automatically change the brake lines, check them and if they are cracked or leaking, then change them.

the fuels lines fittings crack and leak fuel and dont use E10 fuel because the fuel lines will be eaten out by E10

Hello I've just brought a k1200lt and have been watching your videos which are great thank you have done 250 miles and noticed some rattling from engine and vibration on the foot pegs on low revs and deceleration the bike shop had it back for two weeks put a rear disc on said they have fixed it and the noise is normal do you have any advice please cheers Frank

The gauge panel has to come off so start by removing the mirrors, side panels, radio stingray, windshield and keep going from there. It just takes time and a lot of torx screws. While you are in there, change out the dash lights with some nice LEDs if you dont have them already.

Ken, what turned out to be that overheating problem? Were you just sitting in heavy traffic? The LT will heat up in traffic but then the fan kicks on and the temp drops right away. I still ride my '01 LT that I purchased new in '01. All my own 135K miles through 49 states, 9 provinces and Mexico, Certified Advanced Rider in Ohio. Three undocumented iron butts including 1.250 miles from Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming to San Diego in 20 hours. Best bike I've ever owned The video was accurate in its description of the shortcomings. But the positives are unbelievable for those experienced in long distance motorcycling. This is not your first bike to own, and it is not for cruising from one bar to another. I love the ABS system, I installed HID low and high beams early, a Sirius radio with speakers inside the helmets. The electric windshield sounds like a gimmick but I adjust the height almost every ride. The little foldable wings below the windshield are used to direct or divert warm air from the radiator onto your legs: VERY nice on a cold day. Bob

I'm needing to sell my K1200LTA. How can I tell whether I have a C, I, or S model? Kelly Blue Book breaks it down this way and I'm not sure what each means or how to identify mine. ~Thanks in advance!

I am pretty sure the C model has chrome parts and all of the amenities. The I has some chrome and the S has none with no extras.
