She's from back when they built a sail boat first and the apartment on the water part of a Kat second. I'm pretty impressed by her performance and avg speed on that passage as it was very good if anyone is wondering and a full 2.4 knts plus faster than what you can expect on most monohull cruiser type vessels. I have a suggestion for your Bimini/Dodger if you don't mind hearing me out. Look to Colen on Parley Revival and what he did on his Lagoon. Back in the day they still used mainly cloth dodger/biminis because they wanted the ability to easily raise or take them done for more sun. The thing is on a Kat if you want to just enjoy the sun you can go to the enormous bow area and the trampolines. So were it mine I'd do away with the folding bimini and install a more permanent mounted one that can support the weight of a person walking on it and enclose the front at the top of the entrance to the cabin with impact resistant glass or something similar. That would give you so much room for activities above the cockpit like say more solar and you could even use the walkable type because they're both thinner and easier to maintain. With that much area you could install quite a few allowing for a pretty big upgrade to your overall solar capacity. I don't think it would be much more expensive that replacing the canvas and tube bimini you have now and it would definitely be much cheaper to maintain over time considering canvas is only good for about three years before needing re-stiched at a minimum or replaced. There would also be no more worrying about canvas tearing in high winds. Just a thought and now that you've made your first passage on a Kat I'd imagine you're pretty happy with just how well they perform. Congrats on a successful first leg of the long journey to get back to the states. I realize that this video is from months ago but it was still a good watch, thank you for sharing your travels. As an afterthought can you imagine how uncomfortable that passage would have been on your old boat if it was that rough on the Kat, yikes I'd imagine the fish would have been well fed...LOL Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless.

Thanks for all that...we'll definitely check that out. We've been considering a few options for it right how. And yes, we definitely thought a lot about how the old boat would've been...even more so on the big passage coming up! Virtually undoable for us a couple of days.

Yeah a dodger and side enclosures seem a good idea for Priv 482. That sloping fore deck doesn't stop much spray. Nice to hear you didn't get much wave slap on bridgedeck, but the movement can be jerky with 6' waves and short wave period. Nice to see that a tablet with Navionics took you 400nm across the Caribbean. What a shakedown cruise!!

Going to be great seeing what you do with your sails. Better sails can give you more speed with more comfort. Even a Genoa can make a huge difference. if a genoa that is built with good low-stretch materials and a foam luff or ropes sewn into the luff area to remove depth as sail area is reduced, can be rolled in part way and still maintain a good upwind shape. Screechers for downwind. I watched a HH55 go 28 degrees upwind which is insane. They did this because they had better sails and the size of their boat made it comfortable while doing 8-11 knots in 10-14 knots. You have a boat that can cruise at 12 knots with a high level of comfort once you get the right sails and learn how to adjust them as its a tiny bit different than a monohull. I see using a bigger front sail balances the main better in winds that are in the teens to 24 knots. Again will be fun watching what you do with your sail plan. also spend the extra couple grand on sails for better material.
