Great video, you've been a good resource as we install our Tower in a Box. Quick question, any concerns after 5+ years with corrosion on the stainless screws to aluminum feet on the outside of the hull? We did nylon spacers but one got away and we have the screw head touching the foot. I figure I can do a quick paint over it to prevent it from corrosion but thought I'd ask
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog Күн бұрын
Glad it’s helped! We sold that boat and bought another a couple years ago, but at that point, about three years, we hadn’t had any stainless to aluminum corrosion problems.

I would have been down in the salon sleeping until the rain was gone. Where there is rain, there is a thunderstorm just waiting to fry your electronics or those that work out in them
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 4 күн бұрын
I wasn’t out there in a thunderstorm. That came shortly after. And because I got it done, we were able to get the rest of our “leave list” done and were much farther south when Ernesto blew through. Rain’s just rain and some jobs are best not put off.

I’m stoked to see the solar getting upgraded because I want y’all to have plenty of power so you can jump on the computer at all hours and finish writing the second installment of the Sophie Danner series! I just finished listening to Ghosts of Royston and it completely blew me away Eric!Definitely the best novel I’ve read or listened to in a very long time (and I plow through 6 - 8 books a month). I’m ready for the next one!!

At 55 cents per watt mono cell type, delivered and available in the Caribbean, that is a good price for less than a pallet quantity. Great to hear panels are producing adequate power. Off grid off brand inverters /charger/ mppt controllers with ok quality are becoming more available. Recently saw one, SUMY, for 24v bat system that could handle 4000w PV at up to 450v, charge bats at 100 amps, put out 3600w 120v pure sine wave AC and take power from utility/generator for 310 bucks. How well/how long it would work in marine environment is a question. Weather-Seems St Martin just barely dodged the Aug 13 near hurricane storm.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 7 күн бұрын
Wow, that’s a good price! Right now I have them going through the Outback Flexmax 80 that came with the boat. Working very well. It’s a good mppt, just doesn’t have the networking and monitoring of Victron. We haven’t spoken to anyone in St. Martin yet. We were glad we got moving south when we did though.

Why are you using a cutting board when you are drilling?
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 7 күн бұрын
Ha…just looked like one. Just a weird shaped piece of old plywood to make sure the drill bit doesn’t pop through and damage the solar panel.
@myparadiseonbantayanisland9030
@myparadiseonbantayanisland9030 7 күн бұрын
Be sure to get high speed steel drill bits. If you need to drill stainless you need cobalt drill bits and go slow when drilling stainless, i use a start stop method so as to not burn the tips of the cobalt bits.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 7 күн бұрын
Yeah, this was all aluminum, just a really complex extrusion that kept catching the edge of the bits.

Guys, you're talking switching from gas to electric batteries. Think twice! We just lost a couple in Canada. Their boat was with electric batteries. They were found dead in the dingy and no trace of the boat. Experts think that the batteries got on fire ...not the first time batteries burn! Be careful with the conversion!
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 7 күн бұрын
That’s terrible! I’d be curious to know what kind of batteries they had. LifePo4 are less dangerous than AGM. Lithium ion like in scooters, phones, etc. are much more prone to fire when left on chargers.
@tgtg4512
@tgtg4512 7 күн бұрын
@@SailAwayVlog no details, just suppositions. They were retired, having the time of their life. He was engineer and did the conversion himself...and then all ended. They were found dead with no injuries inflicted and the boat gone...

Electric rope cutter aka hot knife would do wonders for your cutting of that fabric ... cut and sealing in one go ... especially around those port lights.

I know this is not real time and your budget is your private concern... But MAN... if that was my boat I would COVER that huge bimini you built with BougeRV flexible CIGS panels. CIGS panels are "1/10th" of an inch thick and are so flexible they can actually be "rolled" into a "tube"... AND they can be taped, screwed or even "lashed down" (which would work beautifully on that huge bimini of yours) so they can be removed in case of hurricane, etc. They are "incredibly" shade tolerant and can even be damaged to a degree that would ruin other panels and still produce a high percentage of their rated power output (there is a vid of a guy shooting a CIGS panel full of bullet holes (for real!) and it STILL safely makes power). (and NO, I am NOT in any way "shilling" for BougeRV, I just own their panels and know they are worth every penny is all... you really should google them...) Just one salt's opinion... Love your channel!! You are like one of the ONLY Catamanope channels I follow... (Monohull 4 LIFE!) =] V/R JD Blackwell SV Rocinante =/|)=

Maybe tile mastic or carpet glue and use a fine toothed trowel 3/16th " or so....? I'm sure your finished with it by the time you read this. I also like the other comment about the yoga mats for insulation.

The thorough way to do the wall is obviously with Faring Compound to smooth the rough spots and paint over that. But an alternative, which might be redundant by this point, is to use rollout faux wood veneers to basically do what you already did with the cloth.

I live in Scotland Sun you mean that ball we see two or three times a year. Then it's to hot because we never see it. It is warm in Scotland at the moment 24c in my living room. You would find this cold. Try swimming in the Forth, makes things shrink.

You might want to try at two layer solution. In a different location as an experiment, you could use an insulate pad or a yoga mat then put your fabric on top of that. It would be two steps, but it would also add insulation and hide the deformities from behind without having to use putty.

Wonder how much more power you could get from bifacial panels? With the sun reflecting off the water should give you more power.

Looks great! Just saw a boat that used glue down floor carpet tiles. Seems like an easy install and I wonder if they're thicker. An office I used to work in used them over a rougher cement floor with success. An option to consider down the road. Multiple options are always appreciated when living on a boat, right? Cheers!

A very thin layer of foam would make the wall fabric look much more uniform. You could also glue the fabric to this plastic panels and glue the panels to the hull.

Yeah, I agree. We're looking into that. The trick is finding something that doesn't absorb any moisture and is still inexpensive in that quantity.
