All Batts have an internal BMS which has safe peramaters set and if the temp is outside of that range then it could go into a shutdown mode this may have been what happened Charge it and once the BMS beleves it is ok it will take the charge otherwise it will only except 3v charging untill the BMS opens up the cells that it will need to balence with the 3 volts charge It is not dead but the BMS is shutting of the over charging if the cells are not balenced Most people by a new batt when it seems that the Batt is not taking a charge it is the BMS that is preventing damage

As others have said load test and not just at the battery; dry connections can make static voltages look OK its not until you start putting several hundred amps of starting load that everything goes belly up...Super Yacht engineer

I got to see the Memphis Belle when it was actually in Memphis while I was in Aviation Electronics school in Millington TN back in 1989! It's the same platform my grandfather was a mechanic on.

Well I’m thankful you got that motor going without too much aggravation. 👍 But next time she acts up on you..pour a little of that Blanton’s down her cylinders and she’ll start purring like a kitten. Works on me that way every time !! 😎 How Bout Them BUCKEYES!! 🏈☝️ 🏆

Pretty much as you said: a battery can have damaged cells and provide not enough ampage to crank but still show 12volts. Really frustrating.

We went thru this at new year- was almost ready to buy a battery but alas it was the alternator.
@waltervanderboor12 күн бұрын
Yes that's what batteries do. to test you need a real battery tester instead of just a volt meter. (btw they are not suoer expensive) as for regularly starting the engine for a few minutes, I would argue never to do that unless your run it really hot. Otherwise, you get condensation and later on that causes issues in the cylinders. Just my five cents+++

Victron have easily affordable battery chargers that claim to help recover sulphated batteries. Worth having one for the engine battery, which presumably you should have 2 of.

Always load test a battery fully charged. And get some cheap electric fuel pumps to help you bleed the fuel systems. It will save you so much time and energy!!

Check coil and points. Also check if alternator is charging back to the battery.

I’m getting up there in my years in the Caribbean if you could only go to one islandfly into it see some sites history or whatever and some trails and stuff which island would you pick?

You check for battery capacity under a load. See what the voltage is while cranking the engine. It must stay above 10 volts or battery is toast. You can do this if your volt gage works while you crank. some do some don’t.
@howardbeer521412 күн бұрын
Batts can show 12V but as soon as you load it up total zero. As the engine started to fire up is showed all the symptons of air in the fuel. They are not anything like a gas engine in that you cannot flood it like a gas engine. As I said that engine had air in the fuel .
@AbNomal62112 күн бұрын
4:33 Eric you are spot on that voltage isn’t everything. Resting voltage is only a small part of the equation. Batteries can build up internal resistance which will then allow a much smaller load. You can actually keep an eye on this by watching the volt meter while cranking the battery. In a car, the voltage will typically drop from 13.5 resting to 12 while cranking. More drop can be caused by the battery health, starter health, or engine getting harder to turn. But… if you watch the voltage drop enough to know normal, you can consider larger drop as a warning sign. 5:33 unfortunately here is a warning sign. When a battery drops below 8 volts under load it is being stressed more than it should. Given your situation, I would add a second battery if there is room. Just couple positive to positive and negative to negative.

Amperage is what matters, as pb batteries degrade the capacity of the battery goes down. That is the typical battery failure.
@MikeJohnson-bu4gl12 күн бұрын
it sounds as if the battery created a full memory state....just periodically greatly discharge the starting battery so that it does not happen again in the future. Have had it happen to me a number of times over the years with an RV, that uses the same type of batteeries.
@johnmason270112 күн бұрын
That same thing with your battery happens here in the cold North. It reads 12+ volts until you put a load on it then it drops way down.

A battery tester has a load function for just what is happening. most auto parts stores in the US will test for free. A cell has probably gone bad. Maybe a good tool to have on board for around $50. With load tester.
@Mechone1112 күн бұрын
True about the battery can show good voltage and fail with a load ....thats why it's good to have a load tester on board. The ones with a heater element are cheap and best as they put a good resistance load

Battery shows volts/ya can light a lite bulb ,,but Cranking Amps Nadda , she’s done I’m retired now but I worked for Interstate Will be nice to have TWO working Engines and sure will be a bonus to clean & paint those compartments. When you get to Trinidad and get a head start on removing THE ONE you will be able to get a heads up on how the new install will work out for you, Hopefully 👍 When you chose your paint, the good stuff will require you to get a good protective mask but it will be well worth it, bet you know this, my 2 cents, I was in the paint business prior! Have a comfortable trip over to Triny ,will be watching your successes with High hopes 🇨🇦Cdn. Dave🇨🇦

A 12 volt lead acid battery is dead when it reads 12 volts with no load. A fully charged one resting with no load will read 12.6. It’s all about amperage capacity.

I had the same experience a couple of weeks ago. The battery was charged but it didn't start the engine. I disconnected it while adding a house battery. A week passed and I checked the voltage. It was 3.8 volts!
@douglasrobbie999812 күн бұрын
Think of an old partially sulphated battery capability to deliver high amperage/current the same way you consider a corrosion infected electric wire's ability to carry high amperage/current. The battery may show 12.5v on a meter, but the meter is only requiring milliamps to get a reading. An inexpensive lead acid battery load tester ($30- essentially a 12v heating coil with attached voltage meter) will give you an idea of battery's condition. There are mixed reviews on effectiveness on de-sulphating batteries, but it is not expensive to try. Nice to hear motor is on its way.
